I did a vocal assessment with David and had a great time. I was very nervous about taking my first voice lesson ever, but he but me at ease very quickly and was wonderful to work with. I plan to continue with David and highly recommend him to anyone looking for lessons.

Serge went out of his way to meet me earlier than usual. He was both professional and friendly. Informative and patient. He cares! In our first lesson I learned so much. He covered the basics along with a few moves. Serge is the real thing. I can comfortably recommend him.

I first started working with Claim Your Voice when I was in high school. Rae gave me a solid foundation, based in healthy singing technique, that has allowed me to sing at a professional level. After a few years off, & with a few bad habits, I went back to Rae. In one lesson she was able to diagnose my troubles & to help me correct them. Lessons are always both fun & productive, the value is outstanding, & I am looking forward to continuing to work with Claim Your Voice! Thank you!

I have never taken singing lessons before. With just a couple of lessons with Mara I have noticed a tremendous change in my vocals. I am able to reach notes that I did not know existed for me, I am in better control of my breathing, my phrasing is better and overall became more confident in my singing ability. Thanks Mara!

I had felt very nervous just before i started to take English lessons from Raul. I had some anxiety and a negative thought about i will never learn English. After taking my first class, i changed my negative thought. I have been taking English class for 2 months and i feel the differences and improvements on my language skills. Raul is a perfect teacher. He is so professional and informed about how to teach. He makes me more courageous to learn English every day. He is also very patient, kind, friendly and understanding. He shares all his informations, sources and experiences about what you want to learn. Learning with him is a big joy. I feel not only happy but also very lucky to know him and to take class from him.

I had my first lesson with Francis and I’m extremely pleased. He is both, very patient and very knowledge on the art of piano playing. He explains quite well even the most subtle of details on techniques (That by the way, made all the difference) in how I approached the piano keys. He was well prepared having printed out material for me to go over and even went as far as to writing notes for me so that I can practice and study on my own. I feel very confident in his teaching and know that I will not only learn how to play piano the right way but also become one with the sound and the movement of my fingers (Per Francis). I am continuing my lessons and I recommend him, for sure!

Christopher of NYC in home lessons prepared our 13 year old daughter for a successful and confident audition at LaGuardia high school. Christopher has a professional background and is focused, dependable, flexible and patient. She always looks forward to and enjoys her lessons and at the same time has improved her acoustic guitar and vocal style greatly in only one years time. What a great talent, we highly recommend NYC home lessons.

This guy knows what he's doing. Not just professional, but also courteous, Marty is the best by far. He has an acutely trained ear and takes your training seriously, but will joke around with you for five minutes to loosen you up when you're nervous. I've been taking piano and voice lessons on a whim and have learned more than I'd expected; after twenty-two years singing in the car, Marty helped me finally find my singing voice in two lessons. I can read music now. He teaches music theory with whatever you're learning to build a greater understanding of what you're doing and music in general.

Dave has been a wonderful teacher! I am a novice pianist and the lessons and homework assignments are tailored for my ability and progression. I never feel like I am being expected to do more than I am capable of. Dave is also a pleasant person to speak with, which is an added bonus, and extremely knowledgeable! I would recommend people of all ages and skill levels take lessons from him. Thank you Dave!

"The most wonderful thing about Jonathan Segal, besides incredible musicality, his kindness, and his uncanny ability to pun, is the way he "gets" my kid. He tailors his lessons specifically to fit my son's interests and talents and quirks, he knows how to inspire him, make music fun for him, when to push him forward and when to let him take the lead. I couldn't imagine a better piano teacher for my, or anyone's child." Cindy K.

Amazing vocal teacher! Nicky is a great vocal teacher who is kind and patient. She has been working with my 11 year daughter for about 3 years. Nicky makes the extra effort to use age appropriate songs and part of the lesson includes music theory. Win win! My daughter can’t commit to the practice time necessary with an instrument, so we went with vocal lessons with Nicky. With singing she can practice any time and anywhere. Nicky has been able to bring out some beautiful notes, making this mom very proud. Can’t beat the price - she comes to our home and is a very accommodating with our crazy schedule. Again she is an AMAZING vocal teacher!!

I had attempted to learn the guitar via YouTube for about 6 months and continued to struggle. Decided to give Josh a shot and have been thoroughly impressed. He is a young, down-to-earth normal guy with tons knowledge and enthusiasm. He actually listens to what I want to learn and structures his lessons and materials around this. He always comes well prepared and teaching comes natural to him. Overall extremely happy with Josh as a guitar coach (contrary to all the others I've tried!)

Corinn was an absolute blast to work with! It doesn’t matter your level of musicianship (I work as a professional drummer), she does a fantastic job of discovering your interests to focus on what you need to learn to be able to perform. She’s generous with her time and spent quite a bit more than the allotted time we set to teach me all the concepts she felt I needed to know for our first lesson. I would highly recommend her to anyone, she’s incredibly friendly, instructive, constructive, and knowledgeable. Whatever your interests are for studying voice, she can help you out as she has a strong foundational understanding given her breadth of expertise (and the varied work she has done professionally: musical theater, jazz, opera, pop, etc.). Lastly, she’s very responsive and communicative! If you’ve always wanted to study voice, are looking to continue your studies, or don’t know where to begin – contact Corinn! -Nick

I am proud to say David brought music into my life. As a former student, I'm grateful for the lessons I shared with David. He is a wonderful teacher who truly cares about his work and what his students learn from him. He pays attention to small details that have immense impacts on the execution of the music. In addition, David doesn't only care about the music played at the lesson, as he works to help students apply regular and effective practicing times and methods at home. I'm so grateful for the many years I enjoyed music with David's guidance and support. He was an excellent mentor, and I could never have asked for a more wonderful teacher to introduce me to the world of music. I hope to forever carry the knowledge and kindness David brought into my life. Thank you, David!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
