Awesome in every way possible! Margaret quoted a precise price and responded immediately to another question I had regarding time. Within 24 hours of the quote, my article was returned with perfection! I have already referred a colleague to her for editing. I look forward to developing a writer/editor relationship with Margaret. I highly recommend her, you will not be disappointed!

The project was to find a professional resume writer who could create a resume and cover letter for a retiree with 25+ years of experience to apply for an administrative part-time position. I believe the comments below speak for themselves. First reaction, "WOW”. I really wasn't too optimistic that she would be able to take what I provided her and craft it in such a way to get so much information into 1 page. Of course my expectation was an improvement over what I provided, but she really took it to another level; I was amazed! To have someone who truly understands ... respects my feelings is absolutely priceless. I guess the best way I can say this, is the professionalism, sincerity and genuine commitment to my project is something we all as consumers wish we could experience with any company we do business with! Well done!" Thank you so much for a job “Well done”!

A skilled writer, he responded quickly and provided service on the same day. Prof. Gerace helped me make my writing tighter and more succinct, and to clarify jargon that might not be obvious to my intended audience. It is not always easy to take criticism (aka constructive feedback), but he was objective and very kind in his comments. I'm thrilled with the way this project turned out, and I would work with him again in a heartbeat.

Laura is an incredible Spanish teacher! She took me from barely a couple of words on the first day we met to being able to have conversations across a wide variety of topics. She is patient, articulate, creative, and able to pull various teaching methods to cater to the way I learn best. She knew when and how to push me and how to constantly keep me excited about learning Spanish She is an absolute professional and was always punctual. The only reason I don't take Spanish classes with her is because I relocated away from NYC, otherwise I would still be taking classes with her. Muchos gracias Laura!!

David Tabatsky edited my book which came out in January. He worked with me about a year. He was a joy to work with, not only because of his expertise in editing, but because he is such a kind and compassionate person. He was always willing to go the extra mile. He is a very creative person and comes up with many great ideas.

Kate is easy and fun to work with. She has an intuitive approach. She is a good listener. I interviewed 6 writers (1 in Canada, 5 in US) before talking with Kate and I decided to go with Kate for 3 reasons: 1- her high-quality is worth more than its cost. 2 - she leaves nothing on the table, she is going to write it out and in a timely manner; without delay. 3 - her interview for my bio write-up was so thoughtful. Meaning, at one point I said to Kate, "I was hoping you were going to ask me about that." I've included a picture of my bio. The best part about working with Kate on my bio is that she aspires to capture your story and her writing technique is so good that whatever your story her writing adapts. Just know, if you work with Kate she is going to nail it! #thumbtack

This was not my first effort trying to use a content writer and I had a negative opinion of all content writers after my first experience. Malory from “The Missing Ink” quickly changed my opinion about the value and opportunity a skilled writer can offer to a company. Malory is an excellent content writer and capable of writing about almost anything. She is punctual and created a beautiful 2,700 words of awesome content and she made it in a day. Based upon her first sample writing effort, I was so impressed that i have already given her new projects to tackle and plan to utilize her unique skills into the foreseeable future.

Neyeah is an amazing writer she puts words together so strategically that it flows seamlessly. It was a great pleasure working with her. Upon working with her on articles for an upcoming project, I learned that she also is great at budgeting which is something I struggled with. She was great at helping me figure out how to save and how much I should or should not spend on certain things . Overall it was a wonderful experience working with her .

I thought JT was great to work with. He really took the time to speak with me and get my vision for where I wanted my content to go and say. If you are considering a content writer, I would highly recommend JT as he takes his time and gets it done right.

As one of Maria’s fellow peers, I have seen at first stance her dedication for her students and colleagues through multiple kinds of professions. Outside of her skills as an actor and tutor, Maria also specializes in essay style writing/editing and proof-reading. Over the last couple of weeks Maria has helped me write a few cover letters for various internships and job positions within the music and entertainment industry. Having already put together a “general” format cover letter, I knew that Maria would be the ideal person to add just the right about of personal and creative touch towards writing an compelling letter. After a few suggested edits and sentence changes, her and I were on our way to creating a cover letter that began to highlight my best strengths as a working professional and skills as an artist/performer. Maria’s heartwarming personality and prompt timeliness makes her the perfect candidate consider at any such establishment and/or work place.

Virginia helped me write content for my website. When I first met with Virginia I was all over the place and didn’t know what I wanted to say or had too much to say. She guided me through the process of coming up with content and asked key questions to help narrow down what my content would be. In the end she took my jumble thoughts and created concise clear wording about my company. I learned more from working with Virgina than I imagined and don’t have anything to change. She is extremely professional, engaging and thorough.

The writer was extremely professional, overall the quality of the paper was amazing. Additionally, the writer worked with me to ensure that my paper satisfied me and met my needs. The writer constantly asked me my opinion on the paper before making any durastic changes. Being that I was on a very strict deadline, I was both amazed and surprised that the writer was very diligent in making sure my deadline was met.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
