I haven’t been taking lessons for that long, but I can already tell that my singing voice has improved tremendously since my initial lesson. My voice now has a lot more power than it has ever had before. The lessons are very informative, educational, and a lot of fun! Since Patrick Wickham is a voice physiologist, he knows all about the voice and what should be happening in your throat/back/abdomen to make certain sounds. I enjoy hearing about how everything works and what exercises to do to work certain muscles and things to improve my breathing, singing etc. I am very impressed with my experience and the service at WVS. Before every lesson I am offered tea, coffee, and water. Patrick Wickham makes every lesson slightly different so that we can work on different aspects of singing. The lessons are also catered to the individual so that you get the best experience and also the best techniques that will work for you. The lessons are recorded and sent to you after the lesson. That way, you can practice at home and you know what you need to work on. Just like everything else, you have to practice if you want to get better and want to see the results you desire. Patrick Wickham even sends you (via email) exercises to do to practice using the various muscles and things you use while singing. If you ever have any questions about anything from a clarification of something in the lesson, or a question about your performing career, Patrick Wickham is always there is help you in any way he can. Since he has an incredible amount of experience in performing, he can give great and reliable advice to any of your questions or concerns. I have had an outstanding experience so far and I can’t wait to see how much I will improve in the future! Thank you Patrick Wickham!

It was my first time to have a vocal lesson in NY. I was bit nervous at first but David was very fun and friendly person and he taught me with his attitude that there is no need to be nervous. I started to enjoy singing. I decided to continue his lessons. Oh It's worth seeing his studio too! Great teacher!

I have been taking jazz guitar lessons from Dom for almost a year and a half now. His particular approach to teaching music is very refreshing from all others I've encountered before. Dom has a certain way of finding a student's particular sound on their instrument and personalizing each lesson to better bring out this sound. My experience so far has been completely positive and I look forward to more lessons.

Serge is an extremely skilled top notch coach and amazing instructor that genuinely cares about his students. His training sessions are very challenging and rewarding. My strength and endurance levels have greatly improved in such a short time since training with Serge. He has patience and will take the time to go over moves as many times as you need, in a supportive and encouraging way. You will sweat, train hard and learn a lot from each lesson. My training sessions were by far the BEST that I've ever experienced. What marks a phenomenal instructor is his ability to teach in a particular way that impacts every aspect of a students life, and that is what Serge has done for me and I'm truly thankful. Overall, I would highly recommend Serge to all without any hesitation. Josette-

Gloria is an excellent teacher. She has a great approach to teaching a language that is patient, considered and is able to adapt the lessons to tailor to myself as a student. She is also particular good at prioritizing what is taught, so you are not slowed down by minutia which takes away the fun of learning a language.

Christopher was awesome! I did weekly private guitar lessons with him over Google Hangouts, and felt like I really learned a lot. You can tell he really cares about his students and puts a lot of extra effort into making sure you're getting the most out of your lessons.

Michelle is great with kids. Our 7-year old daughter loves her piano lessons and always looks forward to them. More important, we can hear that she is really learning and making great progress. Two of her school friends have started lessons with Michelle after we recommended her.

I had my first lesson with Francis and I’m extremely pleased. He is both, very patient and very knowledge on the art of piano playing. He explains quite well even the most subtle of details on techniques (That by the way, made all the difference) in how I approached the piano keys. He was well prepared having printed out material for me to go over and even went as far as to writing notes for me so that I can practice and study on my own. I feel very confident in his teaching and know that I will not only learn how to play piano the right way but also become one with the sound and the movement of my fingers (Per Francis). I am continuing my lessons and I recommend him, for sure!

Guitar lessons can be boring, but not with Steve. Steve's guitar playing its Eddie Van Halen's level and best of all is that he is very humble and a funny teacher. He will take his time to explain you note by note on the entire fretboard. I always have fun learning new scales, arpeggios, triads etc. with Steve. You will actually get exited every time a guitar lesson with him is coming up. A guitar instructor that actually knows how to play pretty much anything on guitar, but if you are into Rock, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Jazz and Jazz Fusion, you should definitely take guitar lessons with Steve. - Winston Beast Master (Khiazma band)

Myla is a terrific piano teacher for adults with some experience. The lessons are fun and stress-free but not "easy." Since I have started with her, I find that I am improving and practicing more because she has ingenious tricks and tools for addressing problem areas. She has a good sense of humor and a relaxed manner. I highly recommend her

I cannot say enough great things about working with Dave. As a complete newbie to piano, I was nervous about starting lessons. Dave has been incredibly kind, helpful, and informative. I'm about five lessons in and already have a level of familiarity with the instrument that I never expected. Dave's lessons are well structured and leave me feeling excited to continue my practice. Highly recommended!

Amazing vocal teacher! Nicky is a great vocal teacher who is kind and patient. She has been working with my 11 year daughter for about 3 years. Nicky makes the extra effort to use age appropriate songs and part of the lesson includes music theory. Win win! My daughter can’t commit to the practice time necessary with an instrument, so we went with vocal lessons with Nicky. With singing she can practice any time and anywhere. Nicky has been able to bring out some beautiful notes, making this mom very proud. Can’t beat the price - she comes to our home and is a very accommodating with our crazy schedule. Again she is an AMAZING vocal teacher!!

As a newcomer to music who's also an adult (I'm 29 as of this post), I was really afraid of taking lessons, since most folks who are starting to learn are young. But Will made me feel very comfortable, treated me with respect, and gave me the advice I needed to feel confident in my journey. I plan on going back to him :)

I've been taking weekly lessons with Corinn for about 7/8 weeks and cannot believe the improvement. I feel so much more prepared and confident for my upcoming auditions. I can honestly say that I have never had a voice teacher as knowledgeable and as committed to my success as Corinn is. I can't thank you enough Corinn!!

I’ve been a student of David’s for a while now, and am consistently delighted by his very patient yet thorough guidance as a piano teacher. I started with almost no knowledge of the instrument and little musical education in general. David is methodical and observant—tailoring my lessons to address the fundamentals but also to develop skills (quite quickly, actually) in the areas where I specifically need help the most. I’d highly recommend David for beginners like me, and—given his obvious expertise—I’d recommend for more experienced performers too.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
