"Mr Kurt Anthony" did wallpaper removal, wallpaper installation, wall repair and paint for me. He did a remarkable job across the board. He came on time with all supplies and a pleasant attitude. He was patient and never rushed, and actually quite a perfectionist which was a pleasant surprise. We worked out a fair price and the work was excellent. Thank you and praises to "Mr Kurt Anthony!"

I'm a developer from interstate helping out my uncle in NJ, and my schedule was really all over the place. Kon arrived to assess the work first to quote, and advise. His price was reasonable. He then commuted a hour each day with his guy from QNS to work on Friday, Sunday, and on Monday in ice. His punctuality, work and word are bankable. He also takes great pride in his work which was perfect, take it from a developer who holds his tradesmen to the highest standard. Brand new walls from an old wallpaper mess.

Celso did an excellent job. I had wallpaper to be taken down and new wallpaper to be put up and he did both perfectly and leaving zero mess. He moved all of my furniture out of the way and replaced it carefully when finished. He was on time, friendly and efficient. I would recommend him to anyone. Thanks so much Celso!

I'm very particular on who I hire cause I've had bad experience with previous contractor. Camilo, was recommended by a friend of mine. We met for a free consultation and the rest was history. I hired him to do wallpaper installation and they ended up working on my whole apartment. They did wallpaper installation in my office, Venetian plaster in my hallway with a marble finish, Crown molding, chair rails and decorative boxes on the walls throughout the living room. I also have to mention I had to go overseas on a business trip two days after he started. Camilo kept the lines of communication open letting me know what was going out every single day. I came home and couldn't been happier.

Nerio and his guys did a great job. My clients were moving out of a rented townhouse and we needed to remove wallpaper, plaster, touch up and paint back a few rooms. You could hardly tell the place had been decorated and lived in for a year when they were finished - well done.

They were absolutely super! Incredibly neat and clean. The work was very professional - and amazingly well-done. They had to insulate, redo walls and ceilings (all due to water damage) and remove wallpaper, etc. They also painted a kitchen with a cathedral ceiling (super-fantastic job!)! The men working were also very respectful to my elderly Mom (always a serious bonus). Truly can't say enough about how impressed I was with the quality of the work performed by them!

Alvaro has great passion for what he does. He came over my rental property and took over my 2nd and 3rd floor, preview we had pop corn walls he was able to successfully remove everything and also suggest a new design and turn my rental space into a dream home. I am very thankful for his service and professionalism. Didn't over promise and finished everything on the time, he and his crew did an amazing job. Outstanding and defiantly recommended. Five start work from start to finish.

Oksana and her assistant did an absolutely beautiful job with my wallpaper! Besides doing a great job with the actual installation, she was responsive, communicative, and flexible throughout the entire process before installation as well. On the day of the job, I really appreciated that they both found a really great solution to the fact that I had gotten less wallpaper than I actually needed. They were super quick too! I cannot recommend Oksana and everyone at her company enough! You should definitely hire them for all your wallpaper needs.

Joe Schallock did an excellent job. In one room he removed both difficult wallpaper and the residual glue patches. He then primed and painted and the paint, and the crown molding and trim, came out beautifully. We then asked him to re-paint a small hallway. This job too he did expertly and quickly. I appreciated his teaching me something about paint and how it dries, and I also appreciated how carefully he cleaned up after finishing working. I recommend him highly!

Carlos was extremely knowledgable and informative. We had an amazing experience with him remedying a wallpaper problem. He removed old wallpaper and installed new paper in two days. The house is old and the walls were crooked, but you can't even tell anymore! Done flawlessly. I will definitely be using him again!

A few years back, the New York Times ran a Modern Love column in which the writer compared relationships to contractors to relationships with boyfriends. In the beginning, he meets a girl's high hopes: he calls the next day and shows up on time, enthusiastic to be with you and full of promises. And then….well, the calls are less frequent, he's hard to reach, and now he's late, a bit distracted, and, worse, he's seeing someone else! No disrespect to men: my late husband was wonderful, smart, a talented musician who knew how to use a tape-measure, a drill, a paintbrush. Alas, I speak from experience: Some contractors are like some musicians: trying to make it, running from gig to gig, and sometimes, well, they are just gigging. Over the years, I've had so much done in our co-op, walls knocked down, baseboards removed, cabinets built, walls replastered, etc. I've made mistakes in judgement, I have had to learn to say what I've wanted, and I've wasted money. I wish I had read reviews, and I hope you read mine: Carlos Vasconcelos is the real deal. I engaged him to replaster my ugly ceiling and walls in a small lower east side room (300 square feet, approx). It was uneven, wavy, full of bumps---all the result of faulty reconstruction, Con Ed soot, and years of building shifting. Carlos corrected everything, patiently explaining his process and reasons. His professional knowledge is sound, his preparation and execution were meticulous: the ceiling is flat, practically rebuilt and the walls are straight. And because I had fractured my knee, I had to ask him to paint the walls, too. Of course, I was looking for the perfect color, couldn't find it, ended up mixing it myself---and he never hurried me. Thank you for that, Carlos. I love the room; it's just what I'd hoped for. And something else: his disposition is as smooth as my walls. He's polite, kind, patient, reliable, always texts or calls, stays late, shows up early. I hope he'll come back next fall. He's an excellent contractor, and one day he'll make an fine husband.

Brian was a true professional from start to finish. Excellent communication from my first contact, and he quoted a fair price. He is obviously an expert and he did everything, from patching and priming the wall to bringing the adhesive and all necessary materials. My room looks beautiful! Highly recommend, MORE than 5 stars.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

  • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
  • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
  • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
  • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
  • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
  • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
  • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
  • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.
