"Steve helps me achieve my fitness goals and is an outstanding trainer. He has taught me the importance of proper technique and the value of stretching before and after each workout. I like that he effortlessly introduces changes to keep workouts fresh. Steve's vast knowledge of exercise physiology is peppered into our workout, helping me learn about how my body works. I particularly like how he can massage out tight muscles and works around my sports injuries."

"I was very satisfied with my massage from William. Being that this was my first time with him and I usually don't work with male therapists, out of safety concerns, I asked him if he could come to my place for the massage which he happily accepted (for an additional fee). He came in right on time, we chatted a bit and then he got right to my 60 min session which was a mix of Swedish and deep tissue per my request. My body feels more relaxed and I definitely recommend him as a massage therapist. Very easy going and as a woman, the most important for me was to feel safe with a male therapist which I did. Would def hire him again in the future!"

"Danielle is extremely knowledgeable and affordable. Unlike most hair stylists, she suggests only what she thinks is best for the client's hair health, not what will make her the most money. I felt at home while she was doing my hair. The way she washes hair is so relaxing. She constantly asks if what she is doing is comfortable, or if the braiding is too tight (which it rarely was). She listened to what I wanted and actually did it. I would 200% recommend her, especially to women who care about the health of their hair. Even more importantly, her and her family care about my safety. After she finished with my hair, her fiance gave me a ride to the train station, even waiting with me until we realized I had missed the train, and then took me to another train station. I can't express how happy I am with what they have done for my confidence! And they fed me, so you can't beat that!"

"I have been getting massage for 10 years and found Yury to be among the Very best! He is knowledgeable and responsive to individual needs and concerns. He offered to demonstrate key exercises I need for my neck and back issues that were brought on after a car accident, free of charge. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a truly competent therapist. He was also very reasonable with his prices as well. Really worthwhile and helpful."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
