Joseph did an outstanding job with wall prep and painting of my closets. Another company I used for another part of the project left the walls in poor condition, unsuitable for painting. Although this was outside of the scope of the original job, Joseph put in the extra effort and stayed late to make sure it was done to my satisfaction. He is great to work with and I would highly recommend him, look forward to using him again.

Michael was great. He was on time and went right to work. He did a great job putting together 2 difficult pieces. The room was cleaned up and he even put the packaging out in the garage for me. He was a pleasure to work with and I will definitely call him again.

David Carota is a very skilled worker in his trade. He is also very understanding of how the job that I needed to get done; Clean & Organize my Parents' Garage is very sentimental and personal to me. It is very hard to go thru my parents' old things, especially my father's. And David was also very personable and at the same time very professional. He knew that any type of work dealing with homes is important to that person's life. I am very happy of the result and glad that I hired a good person and worker. And now I can proudly show my parents how clean their garage is! I will definitely recommend him to any of my family, friends & colleagues. Thanks, Michelle Garcia.

We recently purchased a home that needed repairs. He replaced the bathroom and kitchen light fixtures. He put in a French drain to stop moisture in our garage and installed bike rakes and utility racks. He did a very nice landscaping which made the yard look much better. He also replaced a toilet in master bathroom. We are senior he did numerous other small jobs we just could not do.

Nertil and his team were amazing. My husband and I hired him to add a patio to our backyard where the platform of an old garage stood. Nertil was the only contractor who assured me that he would start and complete the job right away (out of 5!) Our backyard surpassed my expectations, I was meant to put a shed on the patio but cannot bring myself to cover Nertil's beautiful work. He added a small wall toward the back and even straightened the stairs for no additional fee, all the while I was on vacation! I cannot recommend Nertil enough, my neighbors and family members have already come running for his number, he is a true professional I would recommend him to everyone.

Glenn Scelza is a godsend. My old friend desperately needed help of a good carpenter to come and assess the benign neglect on the front of her antique home. Garage doors needed to be installed post haste, but the garage door company needed the repairs to be made first. I posted on Thumbtack and Glenn responded immediately. Glenn arrived and I could tell right away what a nice guy he is and is a seasoned carpenter/contractor. He assessed the project with a trained eye and zeroed in on what was good in terms of the construction and what looked bad to us, was very doable indeed.. He was very resourceful and made use of what could remain and shopped locally which I loved, for lumber, gutters, leaders and even found the novelty clapboard pieces to match the 1940's facade. He was very fair and open about what things would cost along with his craftsmanship which was worth every penny. I appreciate he could even work with us so late in the season even as winter weather set in. He will be present right after the holiday weekend to connect with the garage door people. When those vintage looking doors are installed the place will regain its curb appeal once again, thanks to Glenn. This guy is a keeper and I can see why is highly recommended! I add my recommendation to Thumbtack as well as our neighbors in the community. I look forward in working with Glenn on future projects. Thanks Glenn! Norm Peekskill, NY

Bathroom conversion, tub replacement with stall shower, wall paper removal, painting, new fixtures. Removed all existing tiles replaced with new ones. The job was completed in 6 days (well within the 5 to 10 quoted). Everything went well. Mr. Marotta showed up on time, showed up every day, kept us informed at each step. He made suggestions and assisted us in purchasing (where to go, what we needed, etc.) Mr. Marotta's work ethic and skills are exemplary. And, he's a nice guy. We have nothing to point out that could have been better or improved our experience.

Deuel is one of the most “Professional” Contractors I’ve encountered in a very long time. We hired him to restore the Canopy for entrance to our home – he did such an amazing, and exact detailed job; we hired him to complete the finishings of our new custom designed driveway. He produced another master-price painting job; adding exceptional finishings to our custom designed divider/planter wall and finished off with painting Front & Garage Door. I’m very particular about detail, organization, finishings and clean-up… Deuel nails it. We’re so impressed with his “Craftsmanship” we’re planning to use him exclusively for an addition we are adding to our home… he’s an excellent Carpenter/Painter/Handyman/Contractor and only time will expose his limitless expertise…we highly recommend Deuel!

We had various jobs that needed doing -- rotting wood on the garage door frame and painting the frame, toilet handle that needed replacing, leaking outdoor hose spigot, and moldy caulking around our shower. Donald came to our home on time and easily repaired and/or replaced the things that needed his attention. The results are great. He is really easy to work with and a lovely man. The cost was reasonable. We certainly will call him again when our aging home needs care.

Project: Build an Addition, concrete driveway, stamped pavement!! Hiring Jim Forbes (Forbes Associates, LLC) was one of the best moves my husband John and I ever made. He took our major project of building a stick built garage, built a staircase from the 1st floor to the basement, a stamped concrete driveway, walkway, sidewalks and paving a sidewalk for our new residence in Hamilton Township and he ran with it. We have never been so happy with the outcome of our project. He and his staff were very knowledgeable, professional and a pleasure to work with. He treated my husband and I like he would his own family. Jim kept his timelines as promised, handled all the township paperwork involved, and was very reasonable and honest about the proposals he gave us up front for the entire project. We have had several bad experiences in the past with our project and he cleaned everything up for us. We did the right thing by meeting with Jim and hiring him as our General Contractor. We would highly recommend him, and appreciate his honesty and integrity that he puts into his work. We love the new additions to our beautiful home!!! Thank you Jim and crew!! Susan and John Abatto from Hamilton Township

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
