Vali helped me redecorate my room which included painting the walls, putting up wall paper and installing furniture. He knows his skill well and has carried out all works to my full satisfaction. But beyond that, Vali is a trained architect who has a creative yet practical mind, and he has given me ideas and inspirations to improve my space which have been beyond my expectations. On top of top, he is very pleasant to work with, always kept me informed of progress and keeps rates at a reasonable level. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Vali and can recommend him for future projects.

Moving into a new home we were faced with so many decisions. One of them was repainting, more importantly deciding on the colors to repaint with. We read every design blog and spent many hours looking at Pinterest as time was running out. The painters needed to know what we wanted to do and we still weren't sure. This is when we decided to find professional help to make sure we got it right. Arati came to the rescue. She listened to our ideas and worked with us to refine them. Ultimately she helped us build a color palette reflecting our tastes which we could rely on in our current and future decorating. We found her rates reasonable and working style very flexible. She scaled her services to our current needs while letting us know what other design decisions she could help us with in the future. We would recommend Arati to anyone trying to solve a decorating/design dilemma. Especially if you have not worked with decorators before as she is very beginner friendly.

We have had HOMEesque update our home several times over the last 2 years. Each project no matter how big or small was handled with professionalism and design expertise. Carol always listened to our ideas first and then worked out a plan that included our ideas and then some. She is timely with her appointments and texts and always takes the extra time to make the finished product look even more amazing than we ever thought possible. Her ideas are rooted in sound design principals and she has the ability to work with old and new home decor. We have updated our living room, dining room, family room, kitchen and master bath. We love our new look and look forward to working with HOMEsque again.

My project was a gut renovation two bed, two bath coop apartment. I had a strict $60k budget, ninety-day window and clear idea of what I wanted to do with the space. I interviewed five Interior decorators and I am thankful I followed my intuition to hire Bridgette because she was a joy to work with. She helped me plan the space, source contractors, materials and was my shoulder to cry when I felt the renovation was over whelming. My project was completed on time and most importantly very close to my original projected Budget. Bridgette’s contribution played a pivotal role in my success and I plan to work with her again because her experience, creative insight and now friendship is invaluable.

From the first meeting with Maggie, I knew right away that I had to work with her! I had been apprehensive about beginning work with a designer because I was concerned about costs, how long the process would take, if she would have the "big picture" in mind and be able to communicate it or if would be a piece by piece project where I would be surprised at the end and, if the results would reflect my personal taste and needs. Our first convo hit on all my concerns which I had not voiced beforehand. Maggie has been a thought partner, a teacher, and has made the process exciting, fun and quick. I've lived in my house for three years with little change to make it feel like a home although I tried. Maggie has brought in tons of ideas, keyed in on my taste and in a matter of several weeks, I have been watching my family room, dining room, kitchen and living room transform before my eyes. I love her work style, she provides inspiration, we throw ideas back and forth and even push back on each others ideas when needed. This ensures that each decision is the best decision. We use a combination of Pinterest, email, text, phone, and face to face mtgs to communicate regularly. I love that she shops regularly for clients and texts or sends pics and thoughts real time. We've also gone shopping together which allowed me to pick her brain on design and decorating approaches when shopping for myself. I could continue on but do not want to give away all the pleasant surprises :). Maggie is full of resources and ideas and it is a pleasure working with her.

We Hired Peta-Gaye after my husband and I had just purchased our vacation home in Tribeca, we live in Connecticut and have always wanted a place in the city. We loved the building, location and layout of our new 3 bedroom home, the only problem was, the apartment was boring and had absolutely zero lighting. So after a few back and forth ideas between my husband and I, we finally agreed (meaning my husband agreed) it was time to hire a designer. After interviewing a few designers that we where not very impressed by, we met Peta and a she was so personable and attentive we decide to go with her! During our design consultation Peta brought up modern lighting ideas that ended up transforming our boring apartment into a spicy vacation home that we always wanted. I feel like we did it together! We worked with Peta for 4 months, we love our new lighting design for our bedroom with the new wall sconces, chandelier and wall art. In the living room I love our trimless recessed lights, who knew there was such a thing , they are glorious! The best part was once the design was done she helped us find a lovely contractor who we ended up rehiring to re-do our floors for our home in Connecticut. Peta also helped us with project management, to make sure things where going smoothly, this was valuable to us because we live so far away, so she was like our onsite representation. We love love love our new apartment and I know for sure we would not be as happy as we are without Peta’s help. I am so proud to have my friends and family over to show off the new home. I would recommend Peta to anyone needing spruce up his or her home or needing lighting help!

Really enjoyed working with Tanya. She had amazing style and was super patient with me even when I changed my mind several times. Great attention to detail and actually listens! She was able to stay well below budget and even had fantastic suggestions I never would have thought of. I live in NY so space is limited - Tanya was able to make the most out of my tiny place. I love coming home now and having guests over to show it off. So happy with everything. She’s is the best and is the beat when it comes to the latest trends. Very creative!

Lynne helped me choose wall colors for a major home renovation. Time and again people come into my home and comment on how beautiful they are. I always point back to Lynne! She listened to what I wanted, saw what I didn't, and helped select a palette that works together to make our house comforting and welcoming.

Damon designed my dream living room. He wonderfully captured my personality in the space! He assessed my room, came up with a more spacious/functional floor plan, and worked with my budget to create a completely new space that looks out of a home decor magazine. We chose paint together and made decisions about creating a bar and making the entertainment area more functional. While I was away on vacation Damon made the changes we discussed. I returned to a COMPLETELY FINISHED SPACE! It was so wonderful to not deal with a transitioning room! He painted, layed down area rugs, hung my flatscreen TV(and made any wires invisible!), painted and hung shelves and framed art and arranged it on the walls. He also designed and installed new window treatments that are adorable. He used tons of items and quirky accessories I already had and displayed them in a clean, organzied, artistic way. I am thrilled to show off the apartment and have guests after the great change. After I sat with the space for a while he reconnected with me to see what was/wasn't working and fixed things that were(he nailed down some carpets, for instance and s going to change some positioning of art). I cannot recommend him enough! I have never been more happy to stay home and hang out in my space.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
