Contact and retain a competent architect first thing in any construction project process - let the architect guide the process. Retain an architect who is a member of the American Institute of Architects. Don't default to the lowest fee when selecting an architect - you get what you pay for, and typically, most clients only construct 1 or 2 projects in a lifetime. Don't shortchange yourself - hire a competent architect and pay a reasonable rate so that they can do a good job for you.
