Private Tutoring in Home or Online via Skype Your student is unlike any other; shouldn't you expect the same from your Test Prep? Our Private Tutoring is the core of our business and the best choice for a truly custom experience with SAT, ACT, and SSAT preparation. Private, SAT, ACT, Test prep, Monmouth, Ocean County, NJ SAT, ACT, SSAT Course Layout The Core of the WaveLength Program Truly Custom Teaching. We do not teach a “Method” or recite from a mass-produced instruction script. We bring a variety of fresh and effective techniques to our students and monitor response and results to find the ones that best suit each of them. Continuity of Instruction. Other test prep programs present students with many different tutors for the same subjects. At WaveLength, we believe that this can produce a disjointed learning experience. We also have found that a student’s bond with his or her tutor can play a big part in the understanding and retaining of the material. The tutors who come to your house on day one will be your child’s only tutors; our tutors get to know their students on a personal level while guiding them through the entire prep course. Progress Meetings. Marlee and Matthew and their tutors confer about their students in Progress Meetings to create a flow between the Math and Verbal and give your child a clear and unified approach to the test as a whole. The Big Picture. At WaveLength, we go beyond the subjects of math and verbal and weave Confidence Building and Stress Blocking into everything we teach. Our emphasis on creative problem solving, relaxation, and “pat on the back” check points give our students the tools to actively focus and refresh to maximize performance during the 3hour 40min SAT. We have college admissions in mind, every step of the way. Layout of Our Private Tutoring Courses We recommend the following minimum (non-contracted, pay-per-lesson): 8 –2hr Verbal Sessions 8 –2hr Math Sessions When To Begin: Starting Sophomore year is a great plan. Renovating your Vocabulary is best done over time and getting used to the strategies and unique questions on the SAT and ACT takes a lot of practice. The sooner a student starts that practice, the better. Competitive Sophomores should take at least one SAT Subject test in June. If you aspire to attend a highly competitive college, plan on aligning a subject test with the final exam in a subject you are doing well in, for example, if you currently have an A in Chemistry, be sure to take the Chemistry SATII at the completion of your high school course. Luckily, SAT testing strategies can be applied universally to all of the 18 SAT Subject Tests, so an early start on your SAT Prep will help your Subject tests as well. Beginning the process early will also expedite creating a college list and allow you as a family to begin planning visits to schools the summer before Junior year. Make the Junior year October PSAT a goal so that you prep early and get comfortable for your first real SAT in January of Junior year. Early equals more prep options as well. Starting Sophomore year gives you more flexibility in putting together Small Groups lessons, before everyone has made plans and commitments and while there is still plenty of time to talk to other like-minded students and parents. The advantage of a study buddy or two is immeasurable, and we offer discounts to all the families involved in the group with an added incentive for the one host family. _____________________________________________________________________ SAT II Subject Tests Sophomores and Juniors applying to very competitive colleges should consider taking SAT Subject tests also referred to as SAT IIs. There are 18 different one-hour long subject tests, from History to Hebrew. A student may take up to three different subjects on one test date, however; test dates overlap with the SAT, so it is important to plan ahead. Rather than see this as an additional chore, the subject tests are really a great place for the student to show off in a few of their favorite and best classes and pad that score report with high scores. AP students should consider taking the corresponding SAT subject test as well. The AP and Subject tests are all made by the same testing company and can be taken within 2 weeks of each other, so you can study once and get two tests out of your effort. And we're here to help you schedule and prepare for these exams. ______________________________________________________________________ Curriculum Overview Critical Reading & Writing Curriculum Designer: Marlee Napurano My approach to the Critical Reading and Writing sections centers on exposing how literal and formulaic the verbal questions are. On that platform I have built structured and efficient techniques for each type of question and my students practice these techniques until their familiarity with the material makes them virtually immune to silly mistakes and the stress of the test. Along the way, I teach students to point out (and laugh at) all the tricks and traps in the questions and answer choices so that these can no longer intimidate or confuse. Focusing on what you know, not what you don’t, living by the Law of the Dictionary, staying literal, and breaking the test into a series of short, concrete missions (in 5-15 minute intervals) are the main principles of my curriculum. Math Curriculum Designer: Matthew Makrinos My teaching focuses on problem solving through pattern recognition and streamlined mental flow-charting. This foundation upon which SAT materials and life situations are based is the constant underpinning of my class. I avoid teaching “tricks” to solving problems and focus on one universal problem solving method which functions as the corner stone of SAT reasoning and of all deductive logic. I stress study skills, mental acumen, time management, awareness and elimination of silly mistakes, and conditioning by encouraging students to do head math and discouraging the use of calculators, which drain confidence and encumber. Small Group Lessons: The advantage of a study buddy or two is immeasurable, and we offer discounts to all the families involved in the group with an added incentive for the one host family. You don’t have to wait for your high school or local PTO to offer WaveLength’s after school SAT prep and ACT prep programs With some guidance from your son or daughter you can put together a good group by considering schedule, GPA, and PSAT or PLAN scores as a rough common denominator. As a host parent, simply find one to four other students who also want to prepare for the SAT or ACT. To get the most out of these lessons, students should be academically and socially compatible. We will tailor private Small Group Lessons to your students. College Consulting: Maybe this is your first child applying to college or maybe you are simply looking for personalized guidance through college applications. Our private College Application Seminar will give you an insider's view of the entire application process while building a college list and a custom time-line for your student. Bring your whole family (and your list of questions) to the table as we explore what goes on behind the closed doors of college admissions, emphasizing the do's and don't's of essays, reccommendations, school visits, and interviews. Once you understand the process, we do a thorough evaluation of your student's academic and extracurricular history, and devise a game plan for "packaging" and for improvements and repairs if needed. Next we tackle the college list and review and brainstorm the essay portion of the applications, addressing the Personal Statement, the activity essay, and supplemental writing. Your student will leave the session with a customized time-line from present to opening acceptance letters and a "To Do" list for the entire process. Some popular questio
