These guys were amazing! Setting up the appointment was easy, the technician was extremely punctual and very knowledgable. I live in a 50 year old building so who knows what's behind the wall (I have the holes to prove it) - but he knew immediately and was able to get everything mounted exactly how I had pictured it. Will definitely be relying on these guys in the future!

Jonathan was simply amazing! He came to install a new mount as our prior contractor did a terrible job, and our TV fell off. Jonathan patched up the wall as well, and came back the 2nd time because our old TV when it fell the screen became damaged so had to get another TV. He is fantastic, reliable, professional, and workmanship is high quality! Thank you, thank you, thank you Jonathan for your help. We highly recommend him.

Juan was extremely flexible on timing, very communicative, professional and efficient. My shower was leaking into my downstairs neighbors' apartment and he came in to regrout my bath tub tiles the afternoon I reached out to him. While he was waiting for the grout to set, he tightened all the hinges on my kitchen cabinet doors. Juan returned the following morning to check and fix the shower faucet, washers and water lines. He discussed all this with the building super to be sure the leak was completely fixed and no more water was getting into my neighbors' apartment. I have already agreed to hire him again for other projects.

I've had various issues with handymen during my tenure as a building manager. People not showing up, people saying they'd provide quotes but never getting around to it, and of course people never responding to issues after a job is complete. Manuel is none of that. He's extremely quick in his responses, priced very reasonably, and did a great job with the painting, kitchen and bathroom issues I needed helped with. I plan on using him again for more of my projects as they come along and have the utmost confidence is his ability to get the job done right.

Ted is a very experienced contractor who knows what he is doing. He clearly gave me a lot of inputs throughout the course of project. I hired him to remove the wall between the dinning and kitchen and then looking at his work I gave him many other add-on projects such as building a kitchen island, cabinets, building a wet bar, backsplash tiles etc., He is a punctual guy who shows up to work on time. Not to mention he is a very friendly. He fixed many other small things outside of the project and was kind enough to not include in invoice. I am not going to look for contractors for any kind of home remodeling projects. I was away for family vacation and he helped in coordinating with counter top guys to get the work done. Payments: He took payments as and when the job is done. He send pictures of the job as and when it is done to make sure the end result is as planned. That helped me a lot to see things as it happens when I was still busy at my work. Stop your search and hire him to get the work done!

James remodeled the kitchen, flooring and interior painting. His knowledge and professionalism is exceptional. He is very detail oriented. He went out of his way to recommend few things like missing exhaust in our kitchen. When you seek any suggestions, he doesnt treat it as a way to make more money and instead suggest us what is doable. Many other contractors were reluctant to install an island in kitchen but James is never hesitant to try out something that we requests for. He would be the go person for any of our remodeling needs. If any suggestions to improve, I’d suggest to have frequent discussions with the client on site in person (sometimes text communications make it tough) and you’d be outstanding in your profession. I highly recommend James to any of your construction or remodeling needs.

I hired Johnny to work on a few things around my apartment: hang my flat screen tv and hide the wires; hang curtain rods and three large mirrors in the living room; hang shelves and hooks in the bathroom; and the biggest undertaking, build a custom closet system in one of my bedrooms. Johnny arrived and was super friendly, accommodating, knowledgable and professional. He worked quickly and efficiently, making sure to keep me involved with each placement decision along the way. I have already hired him again for a couple of more projects around my home and definitely reccomend him!

Dear Prospective Handyma'am Customers;  I'll get to the review (they turned our closet into a stunning pantry with a Swedish Modern Aesthetic replete with so much storage we need to go grocery shopping)  but first--- If you are in search of an extremely  accomplished, efficient, insanely organized, communicative and talented team for either an everyday service call or a full remodel (we did a closet remodel, also now want Handyma'am to do our kitchen reno)- look no farther!  If you ALSO, happen to enjoy working with, and employing, generally pleasant and socialiable folk; Melanie, Sonja, Pierre, Toni, Tamisha and the rest of the The Handyma'am Team can't be overlooked and are by far your best bet. These women are awe-inspiring, awesome and some of the coolest and sweetest people we have ever met!  They are also, between them, very multilingual and diverse. It's like the United Nations version of a construction company! Did I mention they are dog and kid friendly??! CLOSET-TURNED-PANTRY-REVIEW We reached out and spoke to a very receptive and peaceful Melanie regarding our desire to remodel our closet and turn it into a pantry as it sits near enough to our kitchen. We were feeling overwhelmed and lost after a previous company had let us down. We weren't sure how much we wanted to invest in trying to get this done a second time. We weren't feeling our usual trusting selves. My husband was more gung-ho then I was to complete the project (he's also a foodie and The family optimist). In walk Melanie and Toni (we had read all the reviews about Pierre and had wanted to work only with her. We admit to later expressing embarrassment after expressing this and then meeting Toni who is wonderful too, we later met Pierre who's work we also loved, our job was a team effort). Melanie walked us through their procedures and protocols and we set up a working consult, it was love at first meet and the rest is pantry-making-hErstory! Melanie made the contracts accessible and was there to explain and answer any of our questions patiently and repeatedly along the way. We had many questions and knew exactly what we wanted and how we wanted it done. This didn't seem to phase them. In fact, it inspired them. In all seriousness we couldn't be more pleased with the fantastic function and end aesthetic of our new pantry. It's gorgeous but moreso; welcoming people into your sacred space is never easy. I am a private person and this team made it a dreamlike experience. They each brought something unique to the design and build and each of their personalities made for a very productive but friendly and engaging work environment. Our kids and dogs loved them and we suspect they may have wanted to divorce us and go camp out in The Handyma'am Work Shop after all the laughter we heard on a daily basis!  Their work speaks for itself. They are reasonably priced for the competitive NYC area and offer great incentives and discounts for repeat and regular customers. They are LGBTQ affirming and supporting of equal gender pay and affirmative action.   Most of the team has over 20-30 years experience in their specialized fields and all are comfortable working both alone and as a team.  Could not have been a better experience in oh so many, many, ways! Thank you Handyma'am Construction Company of NYC and Beyond! We love you guys (no gender intended).

We Hired Peta-Gaye after my husband and I had just purchased our vacation home in Tribeca, we live in Connecticut and have always wanted a place in the city. We loved the building, location and layout of our new 3 bedroom home, the only problem was, the apartment was boring and had absolutely zero lighting. So after a few back and forth ideas between my husband and I, we finally agreed (meaning my husband agreed) it was time to hire a designer. After interviewing a few designers that we where not very impressed by, we met Peta and a she was so personable and attentive we decide to go with her! During our design consultation Peta brought up modern lighting ideas that ended up transforming our boring apartment into a spicy vacation home that we always wanted. I feel like we did it together! We worked with Peta for 4 months, we love our new lighting design for our bedroom with the new wall sconces, chandelier and wall art. In the living room I love our trimless recessed lights, who knew there was such a thing , they are glorious! The best part was once the design was done she helped us find a lovely contractor who we ended up rehiring to re-do our floors for our home in Connecticut. Peta also helped us with project management, to make sure things where going smoothly, this was valuable to us because we live so far away, so she was like our onsite representation. We love love love our new apartment and I know for sure we would not be as happy as we are without Peta’s help. I am so proud to have my friends and family over to show off the new home. I would recommend Peta to anyone needing spruce up his or her home or needing lighting help!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
