Jason seems a nice person. Reasonable price and knew how to resolve a plumbing issue. He had to redo the piping work for kitchen sink. He knew what he was doing. Also he installed my Nest thermostat and it seems to be working fine. He could only test the heating though and I have to wait to see if cooling is OK? My feeling is that it will be fine but I still need to wait till May 2016.

I am giving Varian an outstanding rating because he successfully resolved an difficult emergency situation despite some confusion in the process. He re-installed 2 very large heavy window air conditioners [24,000BTU and 18,000 BTU] I had in winter storage on a hot day when my regular installer defaulted. Somehow he was not aware at first that he would need a helper but while waiting he helped me with sealing up some other window frames in the apartment. He was cooperative and professional. He reinstalled the AC's in accordance with some of my particular requirements. The job cost more than I expected but was worth it. Next time I will make sure the service guy gets the job description from Thumbtack.

I had called Mike for Air conditioning cooling issue. He promptly replied and provided a very quick appointment to fix my issue. He explained my what could go wrong up front and mentioned complete possible estimate on phone. He arrived on time, diagnosed and fixed the problem. He honestly explained to me what was wrong, what needed and what not needed to save my money. My AC has been started cooling again. He also followed up next day to make sure everything is fine. Dexter is very professional and thorough. I had another electrician working in my space, but his work was not satisfactory and I used Thumbtack to get a new electrician. Dexter came to see my job and made some solid recommendations. I hired him and he went above and beyond in my opinion to get the job done. He had to redo a lot of the work of my previous electrician, as many things were wired incorrectly, and not done to code. He installed a grounding rod, rewired 4 air conditioners, wired almost 40 outlets, installed lighting, exit signs, fans, new electrical panels... The list goes on. He got my space up to code. I 110% recommend Dexworks, for your electrical needs. He is dedicated, committed and is very detail oriented.

It can be a crapshoot whenever you hire someone you don't know. The first and most important consideration is this: Is this person trustworthy? And let's face it -- we've all been shafted by companies Big and small (who take your money but offer bupkis when it comes to good service). So, you can bet your bottom dollar that I was relieved when I found and used Thumbtack to locate/hire Paul: From his first email to the finished job -- no hassles, no worries, no weirdness. See -- I needed an air conditioner installed (RUSH ) to beat the ridiculous heat. Paul was reliable (showed up on time), fast (did it in less than an hour), reasonably priced (other vendors wanted double) and professional. Plus, he was clear and responsive with communication throughout the job -- always good. Color me a happy camper. And I'd definitely recommend him.

I asked them to put up a shade at the last minute and they did! Would definitely recommend and will call in a jiffy for anything else I need done in the home! Very nice and profesional people. A+ work.

My air conditioner condenser line got completely clogged due to the age of the evaporator coils causing so much gunk to build up due to rust. I had to shut off the air overnight in the extreme heat. With all the windows open it was 87 deg F in the house. I was scrambling the stores late at night in search of portable air conditioners with no luck being that it’s at the end of the summer season. In desperation, sitting half asleep and exhausted in my air conditioned car at the Home Depot parking lot, I contacted Advanced Heating and Air through thumbtack at 10 PM and to my surprise and delight they got right back to me with an immediate appointment at 10 AM the following morning. Sam came out to look at the unit and cleaned it up so at least we would have air conditioning for the next nights. Today he came out and replaced the evaporator coil unit and added a booster compressor outside because, I guess, of undue stress on the existing compressor. He said that it wasn’t responding correctly and kicking on as it should. Sam did an excellent job replacing everything. He was very professional and personable. The price was reasonable and my problem was solved and the AC works a little better now. The furnace and blower are also very old and if that goes this winter then I will be sure to hire Sam again. Thank you so much for you time, patience and thoroughness in getting the job done. A+++++++++++++

I have nothing but great things to say about Andy and his team. They have done two jobs for me in the last two weeks and have done the jobs well. First job was to come and do an annual central air tune up. The second job was to acid wash my Mitsubishi a/c unit which had accumulated mold. In addition, Andy found some minor issues with the central a/c units and addressed immediately on the spot. He did such a great job that my central air conditioning unit runs now so smooth I can barely hear that it is on. I have had several other technicians come over the years and not one of them did as much as Andy and his team. Also Andy's fees are very reasonable and not out of left field like some techs I have used in the past. Plus, he guarantees all of his work. Most techs don't even mention this because of their unwillingness to take responsibility if something goes wrong later on. I highly recommend Windward HVAC and will not hesitate to use them again. Thanks Andy!!!!!!

Mike's service, and overall efficiency was very good. His price was fair to air condition my entire home using 6 Daikin units with 2 outdoor units as well. We have the large unit to cool my livingroom, dining room, kitchen and foyer working well and a hiccup affecting my 3 upstairs bedrooms should be resolved with his followup call later this week. He returns my calls if I have a question promptly. I plan on having him do other jobs for me, if he can and when he can. He is a knowledgeable contractor that I have known since my son was in high school with him. I would recommend him. RCR

A few weeks ago, on what at the time was the "coldest day of the year" our furnace wouldn't engage; as it had lost all communication with our thermostat. As my wife and I recently moved to the area, we were unsure of whom to call.... I was able to reach Joe from Olsen Heating & Cooling ((862)254-0894) around 6PM on a Friday evening and he was at our house WITHIN THE HOUR. Joe was courteous (he even put booties on before coming in our house to keep our rugs clean), very knowledgeable, and great to work with. In about 80 minutes time, Joe not only had our system back online but also performed an overdue annual maintenance on our furnace; all for a very fair/reasonable price. It's nice knowing that their are great local companies (Sand Shore Dr.) that can help when you need them most. Strongly recommended!

One of the nice things (and there are many!) about dealing with Nationwide Plumbing Sewer & Drain Piping and Heating, is that from your original phone call, to installation, repair or maintenance, you are working with Krista, Plumber and Heating Expert. Other places will send "whomever" they have available "whenever" they want to. You don't want that situation for your precious home. Krista will skillfully advise you, give you options, and send the right person to do the repair or installation. Honest professionals with excellent integrity. Came by to look into a shower plumbing issue I was having on short notice. Arrived early and worked very efficiently. Communication was excellent throughout. Would highly recommend.

I had an issue with Air Conditioner and it was not starting. It is an original A/C unit with the house and issue could not be diagnosed by an earlier technician. Aaron was very responsive and quick to diagnose issue with the Capacitor and replace it immediately and unit started working. Really impressed by very courteous and prompt and high quality work. A big thumbs up for Aaron.

I have an older AC unit in my home that had a few things wrong with it and of course it acted up on one of the hottest days of the year....Danny came right out to figure out how to get it all up and running so we wouldn't be sweltering. Ever since then I have been using him for my heating and cooling and there is not a single complaint I have. I just had my yearly AC service with him and I couldn't be happier with the price or service. Always professional, considerate and punctual. I suggest him to everyone I know, definitely 5 stars.

Being that the hot weather is approaching us, I knew since last year I was going to have to buy a whole new system, so I called all care heating and cooling so that it could be done now before the summer months hit fast. They installed a new system for me in a timely manor and with excellent work quality. All Care will definitely be my forever go to.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
