We hired Erika to conduct an interactive cooking class for our daughters 16th birthday. Erika was great with the girls and they all had an amazing time - all while learning to cook and about nutrition. Erika created a menu that was teenage friendly so the girls would really enjoy the food and experience.

I was looking for a trainer who was knowledgeable in post surgical training. I had serious issues with my leg and had been through physical therapy and wanted to take the next step to working out again. I needed someone who could assess my limitations and provide a plan of proper exercises without causing pain or injury. Ian was the perfect choice. He motivated and encouraged me every step of the way. The unexpected bonus was his experience in nutrition and formed a plan which helped me finally lose the weight I had gained while recuperating from surgery . I would highly recommend Ian for whatever your goals in training may be. He will definitely help you reach them!

When I first met Erika, I had just set out to attempt my first ever sprint triathlon. Up to that point, I had been exercising on my own and lost over 100 lbs. I still needed lots of training and only 8 weeks until the race. What Erika then did for me was above and beyond what I could have done on my own. We began training; building powerful muscles and developing balance and stability. She even helped with nutrition planning and recovery tips. I completed my first sprint triathlon but felt my result was lackluster. For a first timer, this was normal. The next day I quickly signed up for another sprint triathlon for that summer. Once we began training for that, Erika amazed me yet again. The training sessions became much more intense. She provided solid motivation to keep up my mental strength. We built lots of explosive muscle and incredible cardio stamina. I finished the 2nd triathlon in the top 50% overall. It felt amazing. The training also translated well in my other hobby, soccer. The results were very real.

GeneWorks = Gene works!! Gene is AMAZING! It's rare to find fitness professionals who are passionate about what they do and at the same time actually care about their clients' overall well-being. Gene has been my trainer and my life coach for the past 3 years and I couldn't have asked for a better professional. I am a law enforcemnet officer and although I am active in my field, I put on unnessary weight some years back but since training with him I have lost excess body fat and gained muscle mass, I am now eating well based on his recommendaions and feel like I did when I was in my 20s (I'm now in my 30s). I am in the best shape I have EVER been! I recommend Gene to anyone who is looking for an honest, caring and very professional trainer, life coach or sports nutrition specialist. Thank you GeneWorks!!!

"I am a challenging client because I hate pushing myself! John makes our work outs fun. They would fly by before I could do too much complaining. What impressed me most is his knowledge of the human body and how it responds to specific workouts, nutrition, and supplements. He's more than a trainer who reminds you that it’s all a mind game, he becomes your coach. He tweaked my diet, he educated me about reaching my goals, and helped me learn how to maintain that goal. I would recommend him for anyone looking for real results." Cindy

Brandon was very knowledagle and kept the workouts insense and challenging! He also worked with my body type instead of using a generic workout plan and nutrition plan, which I liked the most since everyone is different from one another! Definitely would recommend to anyone looking to make a healthy change in their life for the better!!

Priya is like your own personal cheerleader. She is not only a health wikipedia who knows all about food and nutrition, but is also vastly knowledgeable about all sorts of holistic healthcare methods like natural supplementation and treatments like acupuncture. She is really invested in her clients' health, and she doesn't just dole out advice; she works with you to help you learn what works best for you and your lifestyle. However, if you need a push, she'll definitely give you that too! Changing habits is difficult, and as someone with a chronic condition, it was easy to lose motivation or feel like my progress was going backwards, but Priya was always there to remind me of how far I have come and to help me get through my ups and downs. She is great about checking in frequently and making sure I am steady on the path to achieving my health goals. And whenever I had hiccups, she would remind me it's ok to be human, and that to mess up is alright, and also part of the wellness journey. Consistency is important, and there is always tomorrow to make up for the stumbles. Without Priya's guidance and dedication, I would not have been able to find the self-confidence to get healthier. She has really helped to change my life for the better, and I cannot recommend her services enough.

I have truly never had food that tastes as fresh as Diane’s. Before working with Diane, I searched high and low for affordable, healthy, personalized food options that are also delicious. Diane is my fairygodmother! She feeds my family healthy, clean foods that they love so I don’t have to cook or worry about what to make for dinner because I work. She is also so knowledgeable about health and nutrition and she was able to make me delicious foods while following my food restrictions. She is so nurturing and I would not be able to get healthy and keep my family healthy without her sustenance! Nyc working mom

Ricardo and Arianna are extremely passionate and dedicated coaches! First with a detailed meal plan that I couldn't have ever imagined how in depth it was, with lots of options as well. Also as a vegan this meal plan make sure I reach all of my nutritional needs. The work outs are challenging at first, but effective. Thankfully, they are also throughly explained for anyone hasn't a clue in the gym like myself. Ricardo and Arianna are great when it comes to answering any sort of questions and respond right away. Amazing experience, something I will take with me for the rest of my life.

I've been training with Mike and Susan, the owners of KM Fitness, on and off for a year. Both have motivated me to take better care of my health. I appreciate their flexibility to work with my ever-changing schedule, their immense knowledge of how our bodies work, and their encouragement without judgement. I consider them friends and value their good-natured attitudes, as much as their expert nutrition and physical fitness expertise.

I started working with Brianne last year, and I couldn’t be more happy! I was in a rough spot in my life, feeling down and unmotivated. I had become the heaviest that I have ever been in my life, and I needed a change. I am so thankful that I contacted Ohana Wellness. Over the past year, I have lost almost 100 lbs working with Brianne. YES 100! She keeps my nutrition program evolving with every month my body changes, and we have been doing private personal training sessions 3x weekly. I’m actually now in the best shape of my life at 35 years old! I have strength, and most importantly, my confidence back. All of my chronic pains that came along with being obese have subsided, and I feel the best I have ever felt! I can’t give Brianne enough credit, she changed my life and I am eternally grateful!!

To Whom It May Concern, April 2016 I should begin this statement by telling you that I am a self-proclaimed lazy human. When people asked me if I went to the gym, my response would be, "I hate exercise." And it was true. I would start up a program, quit, take classes, get bored or intimidated... I was always too busy, too broke, and too tired. And with that being said, I was chubby and unhealthy and had very little strength ability. I tried every fad diet in the book. My weight would be up and down constantly and I never held any goal for more than a week or two. I am 33 years old, 5'9, and at the beginning of this program my weight fluctuated between 166-169 pounds. My initial Body Composition read at [34%] which put me in the "overweight" category. I began a personal training program with Arthur Ostrom on February 2014, 4 months before my wedding date. I came clean with Arthur about all of my unhealthy habits. And his mantra remained the same: "This is fitness and nutrition for EVERY DAY LIFE. I am never going to tell you that you can't eat or drink something." And believe me, I was skeptical. I had a true phobia of carbs (it was definitely the bread products that were causing my fat thighs, could never be the beer and cocktails...) and would go hours without eating anything and indulge in big meals in between. And although my food choices weren't awful, Arthur encouraged me to change the way that I was eating. He helped me build a diet plan that definitely fit my lifestyle. And at first, I felt like I was eating way too much, but then I started to understand the program. I ate less at meal times, and made better choices because I wasn't starving. I started training one day a week. I had tried personal training before and always left in excruciating pain, barely able to walk the next day. Arthur took things slowly at first, assessing my abilities and my limitations. We took time to stretch between exercises. The next day, I could definitely feel the work we had done, but I wasn't in pain and felt confident to try again the next week. Each session got increasingly more difficult, but in such a gradual way that I never felt discouraged or apprehensive about the program. I began to feel more confident about my abilities and eager to try some of the things that I was petrified of before. Arthur was with me every step of the way. He emailed me after every session, recapping our work and sending me articles and ideas for recipes and workouts. This was probably the most important aspect of my program. I was accountable to someone and that person cared about how I felt after my sessions, what I was eating, and how I felt my progress was. I was never afraid to ask questions and Arthur was always prompt in responding. I went from one session a week, to two, and ended with three sessions the final week before my wedding. Together, Arthur and I changed not only my appearance, but more importantly, my lifestyle. I am currently at a weight of 159 pounds and my Body Composition has decreased to [30%] placing me in the normal range. I feel amazing in my wedding dress and am looking forward to continuing my sessions with Arthur after the big day! Regards, Kerry M.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.
