Great experience with GR Contracting. The project involved a plot plan to help mark boundries for a garage build. Showed up on time and had the report back to me in a week. Through some thourough investigation of deeds GR Contracting was able to revise and create an accurate plan that got me approval for my project. Definitely recommend their work!

We contacted Global Housing with a painting project of our 2 floor home. In addition to the walls and ceilings, the painting project included various types of stubborn wood trim\moldings and doors that were previously stained. Additionally, making the project a bit more challenging was that we were already moved into the home with our furnishings and had new wood flooring previously installed. James was very responsive from the initial contact and throughout the project. Anytime there was a concern raised by us he quickly responded and handled the concern with ease. The painters themselves were extremely polite and professional. They were careful with covering the flooring and furnishings and really went above and beyond with the quality of the work and even in recommendations. Upon the completion of the project, James reassured us and encouraged us to not hesitate to contact him should we see something that we were not happy with or if something was inadvertently overlooked. We would wholeheartedly recommend Global Housing Contractors and would work with them again without hesitation. Mr. & Mrs. Rios Roselle, NJ

We feel so fortunate to have found Barrett Custom Carpentry! From the first, very prompt, phone response to our inquiry, it has been an excellent experience. They installed drywall in our basement and also made a custom 10-foot oak counter top bar. Reasonable rates, high quality work, and very personable service! I am happy to recommend them.

Carlos and his crew is very hardworking and amazing people. I needed sub-floor redone from scratch upstairs, removing the carpet and removing the old flimsy and patchy sub-floor wood and installing 3 quarter plywood (level it) and put the carpet the way it was back. They did amazing job. Everything was done way before then it was planned. They cleaned after there work when they left. During the work covered things to protect from dust/debris. Money was also very reasonable compare to the market rate. I would strongly recommend anyone need any work done. I already started to talking to Carlos for the next upcoming project (building a new closet in my son's room and the guest room). Looking forward to working with you again guys :). Thank you for all the hard work. Because it was a sub-flooring work and it was underneath the carpet the photos don't justify the work so I am not uploading the photos but i am supper happy with the results.

Home remodeling from Cape Cod to almost Colonial, including foundation, covered back porch, new second floor, addition of mud room and pantry, new roof, etc. Job was completed in about three months, which is not that common, as jobs as such usually takes about six months. The crew was in the house every day working very hard and passed all the inspections very smoothly. Carlos was very honest and trustworthy and every part of the job was delivered with high quality. We are very happy with the outcome and would definitely hire him again in the future!

I highly recommend Vivax for any home remodel or work project. Vitaliy has gone above and beyond on a recent home project which included total gut renovations of 2 bathrooms, rebuilding an enclosed screened in porch, painting and drainage/foundation remediation. His workers did a meticulous and great job by paying close attention to the details. His carpenters did a fantastic job rebuilding cabinetry and showed many years of experience and excellent craftsmanship. They were also very professional and reliable. My family and I are very pleased with their work product and are enjoying our 'new' bathrooms and porch. Jamal Davis

I highly recommend global hill construction company Mr. Shoodi performed an outstanding job and I am thrilled with the final results! My floors presented a challenge as they were badly damaged with staining and paint the full home In only 4 days shoodi transformed my flooring to looking brand new once again and pants results was very good. His technique provided me with many pros: reasonably priced, no need to move out of my home as his products are non-toxic ( a plus if you have pets or children ), the convenience of no sand or dust clean-up. Shoodi and his co-worker naveed were at all times polite, professional, and always on time as scheduled. They also meticulously moved all of my furniture back in place once the job was completed. An added bonus is their office manager ahmad who was a pleasure to deal with. Ahmad diligently took care of all appointment details including my building's insurance requirements, etc. A major plus for the consumer! New York, NY. Shoodi was a true professional.

T&M did multiple jobs for me over the last couple of years and I highly recommend them. Mark and his team are professional, work with high standards, customize solutions and always deliver high quality work. Mark and his team are responsive to requests and tailor solutions to individual requests/ needs. He also has good access to / recommends great places to get high quality materials to pick and choose from, be it stones, tiles, an unusual countertop etc... T&M did my driveway a few years ago, replaced the outside of my house with new siding, stucco and added an extension over my front door, he redid my kitchen, built a new office with French glass doors, a new fireplace incl transformation from wood to gas, multiple paint jobs and also just finished my basement. Quality of work is very good, his workers are very detail oriented, professional, friendly and responsive.

David built the home I currently live in 14 years ago. Actually it was a total remodel of a house built in 1935, certainly more difficult than building new. It was reconstructed with the personal pride of Dave and his crew who were on site everyday. There was constant communication toward the materials and methods selected that affected the esthetics and livability and yes the cost of building my home. Dave and his crew were diligent during their time on site offering suggestions that made the build more enjoyable toward the future. Frequently family, friends and visitors comment on the design and individual touches that make this home. To this day Dave will call just to make sure all is well. What more could you want from a builder?

We hired Jay Quin Contracting Inc. for a complete bathroom renovation. Jay's bid for this project was midrange, however, after checking various websites for customer satisfaction, we decided to use his company. The project included all new waste lines, all new supply lines, mold resistant wall boards, and new sub floors. He designed a custom walk in shower with both a rain forest shower head and hand held detachable shower wand. He also installed bead board wainscoting over walls with a layer of skim coat. The walk in shower with its frameless glass walls, creates a real open feeling in this odd shaped small room. The floor and wall tiles are perfectly set, and each seam was carefully sealed. His workers were polite, professional and very neat, ensuring that the worksite and their path were swept daily. Jay worked well with us and brought our vision of our perfect bathroom to fruition.

Ed finished our garage into a dining room, made a pass through and doorway to the new room, built custom stairs, laid the cork flooring, installed 2 large picture windows and painted the room. It looks fantastic! Ed is very trustworthy and is a hard-worker. We are busy talking about the next home improvement!

This is a genuine review. Eric and his crew did a fabulous job in completely updating our 107 year old porch with new T&G ipe flooring, railings and balusters. Not an easy job but they made it look easy They also reinforced the floor joists after realizing it was necessary. Couldn't have asked for a better contractor. Very knowledgeable due to his years of experience, honest and up front about any details, and easy to communicate with. He and his crew tackled the project right away, putting in full days, and were fast and meticulous in completing it. We were very happy with the finished product--it was beyond our expectations. And his estimate was very reasonable. I would definitely hire him again for any remodeling or home construction project. I didn't know of him before he contacted me through Thumbtack, but we were very pleasantly surprised with whom we got after having to deal with contractors on previous jobs that gave us the run around or cut corners etc. can't highly recommend him enough.

Corey Built replaced our deteriorating 200 sq. ft. cement deck with an incredibly beautiful 400 sq ft composite-deck with lights. It's assembled extremely well with all ends finished and lined up. We absolutely love it. Chris the owner of Corey-Built, is very honest and approachable. Chris was on our build at least 90% of the time. Chris provided the initial plan and built it according to the design. Several issues came up during the build and Chris resolved these without a problem. The end product looks expensive as it was in material and labor. The deck was very well bought and assembled by Corey-Built. We're having Chris back to restore our laundry room and powder room. Big job requiring floor replacement, pocket door, lighting and cabinets. Expecting it to look awesome. Can't wait. I recommend Corey-Built for your next home construction build. Just don't use too much of his time. We're planning more jobs for Corey-Built after the laundry-room and powder room are finished. Garage, kitchen and basement are next..............

Wow, where do I begin.. so we met Gary back in the spring of 2013 when he renovated our house in Brooklyn. He came highly recommended by my uncle Frank (a very hard man to please), so I knew he was the right guy to hire. After doing an amazing job on that project (a major renovation with a crumbling house built in 1911) and numerous small projects, we hired his company to build us a house from scratch. Being that Gary is also a licensed real estate broker, the whole process was made easy from finding a piece of land to selling our existing house, to setting us up with a great architect (thank you Peter Calvanico) and so on. From the day we broke ground to completion (except landscaping), he had us in our new house in just under 10 weeks! I can't tell you how happy we are with the finished product, thanks to all the great design ideas Gary gave me (thank goodness because I can never make a decision.. lol). It still hasn't sunk in that this is my home.. i'm in love! Thank you Gary, Louis, Anthony, and the rest of the crew for all of your hard work! P.S. you were right about adding all of the extra trim work.. it really makes the house pop!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
