I didn't have an opportunity to use Jason's services, as the situation was resolved. However, we communicated on several occasions. He was attentive, responsive and more than fair with his pricing. I have included him in my arsenal of contractors and whenever the need arises, I plan to call Berry's Home Improvement.

PROJECT: Remove and install an exterior door. Darin came to my home a few months ago to evaluate a project I listed on Thumbtack. He provided a quote in writing within hours of meeting us. He was one of a few contractors that presented a written contract that detailed the work he proposed. He arrived at each of our three meetings on time. He completed the job tasked efficiently and left the work space clean and clear. His work was excellent!!! My husband and I would hire HBR again...in a heartbeat!

We contacted Global Housing with a painting project of our 2 floor home. In addition to the walls and ceilings, the painting project included various types of stubborn wood trim\moldings and doors that were previously stained. Additionally, making the project a bit more challenging was that we were already moved into the home with our furnishings and had new wood flooring previously installed. James was very responsive from the initial contact and throughout the project. Anytime there was a concern raised by us he quickly responded and handled the concern with ease. The painters themselves were extremely polite and professional. They were careful with covering the flooring and furnishings and really went above and beyond with the quality of the work and even in recommendations. Upon the completion of the project, James reassured us and encouraged us to not hesitate to contact him should we see something that we were not happy with or if something was inadvertently overlooked. We would wholeheartedly recommend Global Housing Contractors and would work with them again without hesitation. Mr. & Mrs. Rios Roselle, NJ

I cannot express enough how great these guys were. They were professional and courteous the whole time and most importantly they did great work. I never felt like my job was a second priority to any others they were doing unlike most contractors I've dealt with and they finished in a timely fashion. I will most definitely use these guys for any future work on my house.

Rick and his guys did a total gut kitchen reno for me. Kitchen came out amazing and exactly for the price we agreed to in the beginning (which was much cheaper than a lot of the other Montclair contractors). His guys were always on time, curteous and very hard working. Rick was also very easy to work with and I highly recommend!! I’ll definitely use him on other projects in the future.

JTK Remodeling, Tim, did a fine job with the projects I needed help with. He was right on time and got right to work. He had asked me to send him pix prior to coming to do the work so he prepped and made sure he had the right materials to complete the job - no surprises - well there was 1 little surprise, not his fault, and he managed to work around it anyway. Very personable.

A few days ago I had a new stove delivered while they delivered it to my kitchen they suddenly said that the connection required a license electrician. Thank God for Thumbtack and Mike. He answered quickly what's Pleasant and efficient with a sense of humor and was here all of 20 minutes. I would recommend his work to anyone who is tired of contractors who take hours to do a simple task or who overcharged I felt that his rate was good and I fully intend to use him again if I have additional electrical needs. He's on the permanent Rolodex

I have worked with Abdul on multiple projects. I manage few rental properties across the state of NJ. He is my go to person. He gives me his honest opinion and is very responsive. I have worked with many contractors but Abdul is by far one of the best. He is so punctual and all my tenants are always pleased with his manner and professionalism. I would highly recommend him for any job you may have.

I had a terrible experience with my first contractor, so dealing with Erik was like a breath of fresh air. He showed up on TIME every day. He was reasonable in terms of prices, and he is a straight shooter. He does quality work, and if a mistake is made he takes responsibility and fixes it. If you call him, he almost always gets back to you right away. The other things that I really like about him that differentiates him from other contractors is that he does most of the work himself and he is HONEST. So if you're looking for a great contractor and great person to deal with, pick up the phone and call him NOW

I rarely write reviews but this one is a must. We hired a contractor to do our basement remodel and we were living in that nightmare nobody wants to be in them. 4months, missed appointments, no shows, work not done correctly... Etc. We were forced to fire them and find a new contractor to save us from the nightmare. C & G Builders saved us, what a difference from working with the other guys. They finished our basement and fixed all the mistakes the other company caused. Extremely professional! I can't say enough about them!! I will be more then happy to be a reference if you are thinking about hiring them.

These guys were the best price for a last minute job (moving a sectional across town), when other movers were trying to get obscene amounts of money out of me. They were quick, careful, and prepared. Easily handled the 5th floor walk up with my sofa. Would use them again.

We had my commercial roof job done by MSI the price and the quotation was reasonable. I would definitely recommend and they are general contractors. Work ethics and the time frame that was given was on point. Will do business with them again and Future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
