I didn't have an opportunity to use Jason's services, as the situation was resolved. However, we communicated on several occasions. He was attentive, responsive and more than fair with his pricing. I have included him in my arsenal of contractors and whenever the need arises, I plan to call Berry's Home Improvement.

The job could not have gone more perfect. My contractor cancelled last minute for a job that needed to be done before Christmas as it was a gift. I hired Al over the phone as I was desperate and he came over right away. I was extremely nervous and worried he may try and over charge due to the circumstances and my need for immediate assistance. He had no reviews for me to read and I have had a few bad experiences with contractors in the past. Al was polite, clean, neat and treated my home as if it was his own sweeping and vacuuming as he went along. I was only planning on having him do the hard labor and I was going to finish the rest on my own. Al was a very pleasant find and I will be referring him to anyone I know who needs a contractor. He did not over charge and went above and beyond to help finish the entire job for me.

David and his Company have been helping me on various projects for over a year now. I was fortunate to find them through thumbtack. I was in dire need. I had realized a water stain forming in the bathroom ceiling of my shore rental on a Sunday afternoon only two hours before having to head back to Boston and I was scheduled to have house guests in 4 days. Who was I going to find in 2 hours notice on a Sunday afternoon to come help me? Like a miracle David responded within seconds of me posting on thumbtack. I explained the issue and my time constraint and he said, "I'll be right over." As soon as we met in person I knew this was the type of honest professional contractor that I could trust (hard to find! I own two rental properties.. believe me). David assessed the situation and told me not to worry. He would send me a detailed quote of what was needed by later that night and that I could rest assured the work would be done for my guests in time. I was able to trust him with my house keys and everything went smoothly. He left the place in excellent condition and stuck to his word on his quote. Since that instance I actually stopped using another contractor that I often used and starting contacting David. Over the last year he's run to my rescue several times and more recently accomplished yet another successful job for us. David is honest, reliable, thorough, and a pleasure to work with. He goes out of his way all the time. There's no way I could possibly manage renting a property in NJ while living in Boston if I didn't have someone like David to help me out!

I hired HIM Direct for a shed demolition job on April 15, 2016. We scheduled the job for April 18-19. I left for vacation April 16-21. When arrived to my home on the 21st the shed was gone. There is nothing more satisfying than paying for a job well done. I would recommend HIM Direct for your home improvement needs in this area. Expect great service and fair pricing.

ROBERT is the consummate professional. I had 4 windows to be replaced. My old contractor left me with the replacement windows, after having been paid. ROBERT stepped in and did a professional job, cleaning all the garbage and the old windows. Having an impossible schedule, ROBERT fit me in on my free time, did the job quickly and cleanly. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr Dasi for any job, and I would definitely use him again should the need arise. Thanks ROBERT.

I wanted to recreate the feeling of relaxation, calmness and fun that I get when I visit the rivers and beaches of my home country of Trinidad. Don and his team masterfully recreated that feeling with executing the design of my two bathrooms! It is very difficult to find contractors that are not only excellent at what they do but also trust worthy and respect your home. I was able to give them keys to my home, and go to work feeling confident that my home was in safe hands. Thank you to Don and his team for giving me my own little river and beach mini getaways right here in hectic NYC!

Originally went with ADL Demolition Services suggested by Thumbtack. Spoke to Dan, set up two appointments and he was a no show for both with no calls to cancel. He no longer returns my calls. Very disappointing. Went with Mike at Capital Waste Recycling also through Thumbtack. He showed on time and dismantled and removed my pool quickly and professionally. Great service, five star. Would use him again and recommend him to all. He came with Bill who did the bulk of the work. Bill worked hard and had to use a small front loader to remove the mud filled liner. He did a great job. Completely satisfied.

I literally cannot say enough good words about L&Y!!! They were a true pleasure to work with. They went far above and beyond what was expected to get the job done. They did an exceptional job and left the site clean and organized. They worked with me every step of the way, ensuring that I was aware of the work that was being done. They were also incredibly kind, trustworthy and understanding people. This particular project required unique soundproofing options. Options that are not standard for most contractors. L&Y were stepped up to the challenge with nearly 2 decades of experience and a team of experts. They completed a job that could have easily taken weeks in 3 DAYS. This allowed me to get my studio set up considerably quicker and will slow me to get to work. I will definitely work with them again and can recommend them to anyone.

This company surprised me with their Professionalism and work ethic. I've had very bad encounters with other contractors in the past but their Manager Josh is one of the best in the business. Him and his team worked overtime completing my drywall removal & floor installation in 2 1/2 days. I had major mold issues due to water damage In my basement and GlobeTech took care of it right away. Would definitely call them for any work I may need in the future.

I hired McNair and Sons to do a concrete removal project for me. It was about two tons of broken concrete and I was acting as the go between for a third party. I really had concerns about how good of a job McNair and Sons would do. In fact, the third party did not want them to do the job unless I was present. On day that was scheduled, I did not make it to the site. After about two days I made it to the site to evaluate the work (thinking there would be small pieces that I would have to remove. Wow! To my surprise the job was excellent. One would not have known that approximately two tons broken concrete had ever been at that location. I really do highly recommend this company. The price they charged was really reasonable. The work was done over two weeks ago and I am still telling people about my big surprise. L.W.

John and his crew beat the lowest bid and did great work. They took down a 40x 30 deck with 10 tons of steel like it was nothing. Very nice and easy to work with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
