Tony arrived on time. I brought him on to replace the bathtub handle and shower faucet. He was very knowledgeable. Although I previously purchased the parts there was things missing. He had parts available in truck and finished the job. He seems to take his job very seriously and is very professional. His hourly rates were as discussed and l am looking forward in hiring for other projects.

Great and very professional job on a bathroom remodel. We hadn't planned to get a remodel so soon in our new house, but had a leak and learned that the original contractor didn't do the tub / tiling properly. ADAD quickly assessed the problem and worked with us to develop a solution. They started the job very soon after we agreed to hire them. Resetting our tub and retiling the shower area took about three days, plus an extra hour or so to patch up some remaining issues. The company's leader, William, was very responsive to our requests and concerns throughout, and made sure we were happy with the work before declaring the job done. He was also upfront about how different options would affect the final price. And for the mobile savvy, they take Venmo payments! Overall, we're happy with the end result.

Even though it was raining, he was extremely professional, he replaced my hose faucet and kitchen faucet seamlessly with no mess, and I love the fact he gave me options on which replacement hose faucet to use! Really good job!!!

Solution Based Plumbing initially quoted us $1200 for replacement of piping in our 1/2 bathroom. The quote was based on pictures that we sent. Upon arrival, the plumber discovered that the piping was solid and we only needed a new toilet ring. The total cost was $275. We greatly appreciated their honesty and will most definitely call on them again if/when plumbing, heating, and/or ac needs arise.

Great job handling some bumps in the project. We had 3 basement windows replaced. We ordered new construction windows instead of replacement, so that added complexity but Darin was still able to complete the work quickly and make the finished product look great. He stuck to his initial quote even though it must have taken him more time than expected. The job required a lot of tools and mess but he left things looking tidy. He was also very responsive as we set up the appointment. Would definitely hire again. Thanks!

Nick deserves a 5/5 on all counts. He replied almost immediately to my request for an estimate, showed up the very next day to check out what I needed and scheduled and completed the job quickly. When a complication arose (because of old wiring, not anything Nick did or didn’t do) that required more time, he was not only honest and reasonable about the issue, he also made accommodations to finish the job ASAP. His estimate was lower than the other electrician we interviewed, but his work was stellar; he not only did what we asked, he did it beautifully and cleaned up after himself... and the estimate changed (quite fairly) only because we needed to replace more wiring than we expected. On top of all, Nick is a very nice and trustworthy person. We will definitely be referring him to friends!

My downstairs ceiling would leak while the shower was on. Glen responded quickly, was on time, and prepared for the job. He explained everything that had to be done (dumbed it down for me). He even took the time to look at other projects that I need done in the future. I was very comfortable around Glen, nice down to earth guy.

We hired James and Global Housing Contractors to remodel a bathroom. The process for us to select the right contractor took months, and during this process James was by far the most responsive, visiting us multiple times, submitting proposals, 3D models, reviewing and accommodating our ever changing circumstances and needs. Our project scope has actually increased quite significantly (for example, we added a second bathroom to fix, lots of additional small items that we didn't consider at first) and James and his team was flexible and professional all along the way. James personally supervised the work multiple times a week and we couldn't be happier with the end results. During the whole process James was responsible and we could work out every single detail (e.g. tiles, paint colors, solve some unforeseen problems, etc.) together. We will definitely work with Global Housing Contractors in the future.

Joe was amazing! First of all, he responded to my request right away to replace my kitchen faucet. I was very impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. Then, I was surprised by how quickly he was able to do the work. He would have come later on the same day, but I was not available so we scheduled it for the following day in the morning. He arrived promptly at the time we set up and he came prepared to complete the job with the new kitchen faucet that I selected in hand. He was very courteous and friendly and I was able to tell that he takes great pride in his workmanship. If you want quality work done at a very reasonable price, I highly recommend him and I will utilize his services from now on. It is very rare these days to find a contractor that is responsive and cares about the quality of his work.

We hired Douglas to do a walkway and patio with a fire pit. He was responsive, listened to what we wanted and gave us ideas as well. He gave us a good price, and his wife has a great eye for color and design. His team worked quickly and efficiently without sacrificing the quality of the work done. We will be hiring him again for some landscape projects. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their outdoor spaces!!!

Steven did an amazing job repairing a number of jobs at my house. He repaired holes and repainted numerous areas in the house, including the front door frame. He replaced front door handle and lock, reset my kitchen sink to my granite, replaced 3 light bulbs in hard to reach places, fixed brackets in my kitchen cabinets, replaced the brackets and re-hung a stair railing and replaced a stopper in my bathtub. He arrived exactly when he said he would and managed to understand exactly what I needed even with the chaos that are my kids. He stayed all day and finished the whole job and returned a couple days later to remove some braces and check my satisfaction with his work. He did all of this work for more then a reasonable price and I highly recommend him for any "handy man" job you may need.

Artech was a wonderful company and I'm glad we picked them. Alex was very responsive on Thumbtack and was able to come out and give a quote within a couple days. The estimate was lower than a couple of other companies. They did a wonderful job! There was one area that wasn't perfect and without complaining, they came out and re-painted the entire wall over again the next day. IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL. We are so thankful for their work and would recommend them to anyone who needs painting or other restoration services! If I could give them more than 5 stars I would!

Job: Fix broken spout in bathtub What went well: The damage was more extensive inside the wall but the plumber (Vaidas) did an excellent job repairing it. He put strong brass fittings inside to replace the older softer copper. I would highly recommend Vaidas to everyone. He is very professional and thorough and does not try to upcharge at the slightest pretext like a lot of people these days. Hard to find good folks with integrity like Vaidas.

Skip came out on time and was very professional. I knew I had major work that needed to be done. He jackhammered the floor, replaced the pipe with new plastic which is industry standard now and poured new concrete. I had a problem with my toilet valve and he came back and replaced that for free. Prior to calling him I had called 3 big plumbing companies who thought I didn't know anything but I could do the work myself if I wasn't disabled. Skip may be a small business but his skill level is definitely a Master and he didn't rip me off like the other big companies tried to do. Trust me just call him and forget the bigger companies you'll save money, get the job done correctly and won't have to worry. I'll hire him for all my plumbing need's! Thank's Skip. Bob Atkins

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
