Dinner with Tony was outstanding. He worked with us to create the perfect menu to celebrate our anniversary. The food was excellent and so was the conversation.

Chuck and Marie were professional and their food was excellent. They called ahead to indicate they were running about 5 minutes later than their expected arrival (a proper, professional touch). Chuck made sure that special dietary needs of several guests at my wife's birthday party (lactose intolerant, vegetarian) were satisfied while still keeping the food quality excellent-and it was really good! All of our guests commented on how pleased they were with the food. One last comment; Chuck and Marie were so pleasant and nice that we were happy to have them in our home. We highly recommend Every Detail Catering (party was 5/7/16).

Anton was so wonderful to us during the whole process. From the first phone call, picking our buffett menu and pricing. We had a set per person price and he quoted us under it. We had impeccable service at our wedding reception. His staff treated my husband an I like a king and queen. Now to the food. The best I can come up with is amazingly awesome. Everything was way beyond my expectations. Every guest personally came to us remarking how superb the food was. I highly recommend Feast Caterers for any event you may need a caterer for. I look forward to planning another event with Chef Anton.

We had a party in our home for 30 colleagues. Chef Dan arrived exactly on time and brought everything he needed with him. He prepared an array of visually appealing and delectable tasting culinary creations that wowed our guests taste buds and satiated their appetites. The bartender was great and the servers did an impeccable job of constantly bringing Dan's gourmet offerings while being pleasant and unobtrusive. Many caterers provide quantity and some high quality- chef Dan did both at a reasonable price and with a smile on his face. He cooked everything fresh in our kitchen and when he and his staff finished, our kitchen looked as pristine as when he arrived. The party was great fun and a big success. Every one of our guests commented on how fabulous the food was and how outstanding the service. He is our go to guy for any future parties or affairs. kudos and thanks. Mel & Pamela Pratter

Five stars doesn't do them justice! Our experience with Ms. Reid-Worthington and everyone at 'Now That Was A Great Party' was outstanding. Ms. Reid-Worthington was a consummate professional from the very first email to the very last moments of our event. Their food was absolutely devoured and received rave reviews from our guests! Ms. Reid-Worthington made such an effort to create a menu that reflected our vision for the day- even taking on special requests. She was open, patient, kind and offered great and helpful suggestions. While this time around we only hired 'Now That Was A Great Party' for catering- I know that they do full event planning, and based on my experiences, I would be extremely confident having them plan my event from start to finish. We had a great feeling right from the start about 'Now That Was A Great Party', and about business owner, Ms. Reid-Worthington, and our instincts were spot on. We're looking forward to working with 'Now That Was A Great Party' for many years to come!

Brenda has hosted many parties for me. Her catering is amazing! Her crew is extremely professional and efficient. They show up on time, ready to work. Her food presentation skills are excellent, and the food is always delicious. Most importantly, they leave my home extremely clean when they depart. I recommend her services overwhelmingly.

Chef Tanya provided the appetizers and desserts for a private cocktail party of 40, to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. First, Tanya visited me at my home to get the "lay of the land" and to learn the type of appetizers that would please my crowd. Later that night Tanya sent me an email a pro-forma menu attached, and the suggestions were amazing and spot-on. No need to change a thing. Tanya and her assistant arrived 3 hours before party time with all the ingredients and equipment she would need. They made all the food from scratch, right in my kitchen: all fresh ingredients, nothing prepared or cooked elsewhere in advance. I wish I could have captured the amazing fragrances in my kitchen and bottle them! Throughout the party, Tanya collaborated with the servers, the bartender, and myself, producing wave after wave of amazing food while my guests were thoroughly entertained. At just the right moment Tanya & Co brought in the most incredible Apricot Pecan Cake, with a '6' and a '0' candle on top, and we all joined in a chorus of Happy Birthday. I could just rave on and on here, as my guests did throughout and after the party...but let me complete my story by saying that, after 3 hours of food prep and a 3 hour party of continuous food, Tanya and the servers cleaned up the entire kitchen, leaving it as they found it - freshly cleaned and spotless. As for the "planning" vs "fulfillment", Tanya's estimate of how much food would be needed was incredibly accurate...everyone ate until their hearts' content, and only small tray of hors d'oevres remained afterward...which I promptly seized for my own late night snack! Bottom Line: Chef Tanya is a complete pro and an outstanding chef. I would recommend her to anyone wanting to do something special for a special occasion. Thank you, Tanya!

We had a dinner party for 16 people. We started with drinks and hors d'oeuvres served beforehand, and then sat down for a 4 course dinner and dessert. It was a brilliant evening. Deirdre worked with us to develop a menu, and then delivered a delicious meal. Despite having so many people at our house, we were actually able to be out with our guests enjoying the whole evening as Deirdre and her team delivered course after wonderful course. I would highly recommend.

Years ago when I was first considering going into the culinary industry, I found Scott and took one of his cooking classes. Immediately I knew I had made a good decision. His teaching style was fun and engaging, hes incredibly knowledgeable, and his years of experience show through! Not only that, but I asked him to help me cater a party for family members as a way to get myself more experience. He helped me with deciding recipes, portion sizes, pairings, everything! Now as Im entering the industry, I look back and can honestly say that he was a pivotal part in my career path and I cant think him enough. I would recommend Scotts services to anyone.

Good experience.. Food arrived in time, food was still hot (we're located an hour away). My staff thought the food was very good (we chose the chicken parm, ribs, shrimp scampi, and salmon filet along with some sides)... The brownies were great, cookies a bit on the hard side. We'd use this caterer again.

She catered my daughter's Outdoor Graduation Party. Her staff came early and went beyond the call of duty, setting up tables & chairs, grilling fantastic tasting food & constantly asking if I needed anything else. I give her company 5 stars. :-)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
