Ellen Deluise catered a wedding reception for me for 150 people. I selected a traditional menu but Ellen provided several other menu options to choose from. She was very professional, easy to work with and was quick to respond to phone calls. The quality of the food and presentation were excellent. I would definitely hire her again in the future.

We hired Every Detail Catering for our wedding of 100+ guests on 5/20/17 and they exceeded all expectations! We couldn't of been happier with the service and most importantly all the food was amazing – our guests have been raving about it for weeks now. Chuck and Maria take catering to a whole new level and truly have every detail covered. I would recommend Every Detail Catering to anyone without hesitation.

Chris assisted me with my wedding catering - on top of being such an extremely talented chef, he is so knowledgable about food & catering logistics. I have also eaten at many of the restaurants he has cooked at - amazing! So lucky to know a chef like him.

Tamara and her team catered our wedding reception (about 100 guests). She also did day of coordination and set up for the event. The day and night ran smoothly and the food was delicious (one of our guests told me the appetizers were the best she had ever had). The staff was friendly and helpful. Additionally, Tamara was flexible and amenable to our requests. She responded to our questions promptly.

Dan and his team provided a cocktail reception menu and service for my outdoor garden wedding of 80 people. Dan was incredibly accommodating, providing a tasting at our home, and being very accessible throughout the planning with any questions I had. His food is beyond excellent, and the price was quite reasonable. Dan and his team of servers and bartenders were prompt in arrival and efficient...when not serving food, they were moving chairs as the even transitioned. I had MANY compliments from my guests on the quality of food, as well as the high standard of service. A server, upon learning the vegetarians in our group, appeared with a tray of bite sized vegetarian fare, just for each of them. The bartenders knew what I wanted to drink as I approached the bar each time. Dan was flexible with his team....allowing me to choose in the moment if I wanted to keep the bartenders or servers later into the night. I would HIGHLY recommend working with Chef Dan for any event!

We had a small wedding celebration catered by DeCicco and Sons and it was a great experience from beginning to end. From the first text I received with a quote it was clear that they are incredibly professional and easy to communicate with. On top of the great customer service the food was very delicious and everyone raved about the taste and how well they accommodated for dietary restrictions. I would recommend them in a heartbeat and am so happy we found them through thumbtack.

Adolfo and his team catered our wedding reception in our backyard last weekend, and everything was amazing! When we met Adolfo during the planning stages, we felt comfortable with him and knew our reception and guests would be in good hands. Everyone was so professional and kind and helpful and the food was delicious. They helped make the reception run smoothly (even when the rain changed the set up slightly), and I didn't have to think about anything once they arrived. I really could not recommend them more highly! I would definitely hire them again.

Chef Aless is a gem. When we first met Chef Aless she immediately put us at ease. She has the perfect blend of intuitiveness, professionalism, flexibility and a wonderful attention to detail! I was so excited to have her cater for our wedding and told some of the guests beforehand to be sure that they stopped by to meet her! It is always so refreshing to work with someone so accommodating and easy to work with, and Chef Aless has those qualities in spades. The food was as beautiful as it was delicious. My personal favorites were the miniature pork taquitos! You want things to be just right for your wedding and Chef Aless ensured that they were! She brought her own servers after ours fell through shortly before the wedding. Days before the wedding I emailed to see if she could help out with “just one more thing” and it was no problem. In short, I never had to worry about her part in our wedding day, and as any bride can attest that speaks volumes. Thank you, Chef Aless! We are so grateful. We hope we will have a reason to use your services for another occasion again!

Hired Chef Evans and Kulinary Kings for a 25th Wedding Anniversary garden reception. Everything was outstanding. The food prep, presentation, servers, food quality was exceptional. We had over 85 guests and they are still talking about the food quality and variety. Some of our guests are certified foodies and they had no complaints. Would not hesitate to hire Kulinary Kings for any event. Thank you so much, you made our day a memorable one.

Peter has taken the wedding party for my son, Michael and his wife, Fate, to a highest level that anyone could ever imagine. He paid attention to all details from the moment he walked into our house to set up the food stations, the bar stations and the kitchen where he and Jennifer, his assistant, worked. The food he cooked were very creative and beautiful and his staffs were so good in learning how to say the names of our Vietnamese and Filipino food. I strongly recommend Peter to any parties, whether for a wedding event, or home dinner. Thank you, Peter, you are the greatest (may be Momofuku should pay attention to the next Pork Belly bun with Kim Chi). Best regards, Kim

We absolutely loved working with T&C Catering for our wedding and would recommend their services to anyone. Carol was very easy to work with, detailed oriented, and her food was great! She helped us leading up to determine what we like. We wanted something different for our wedding guests and decided to have BBQ. Carol and her team prepared an amazing meal that was exactly what we were looking for. The staff were also very attentive and friendly during the wedding. They did a great job making sure our guest were happy and full! Plus they all went above and beyond that day, literally. The venue's elevator broke the day of the wedding and they had to carry all of the food, drinks, and supplies up six flights of stairs. They did this with a great attitude and a smile. That spoke volumes to their dedication to their job. Without T&C Catering we couldn't imagine our day would have been. They helped make our special day unforgettable for our guests, which they still rave about the food. Thank you again for everything! Jamie & Audrey (photos to come soon)

Our experience with Harvest Specialty Catering and Jason was all that I could ask for. We chose this company for our daughter's barn wedding. Initially, Jason was willing to work with us for a limited portion of our event, something many caterers are NOT willing to do. After time (and a taste testing!) we opted to use him for all but dessert (we had a friend doing the cake.) We so appreciated his flexibility and willingness to work with us. He accommodated us and our changing needs at all points of our journey, even in the midst of his own challenges with equipment issues. We never knew about his difficulties until later, and not from Jason but the venue staff, as he and his crew pulled off a wonderful dinner. Our wedding guests were very complimentary of the food. On every level, we were thrilled with our choice. I would highly recommend this company for your event, whatever it may be.

We had a backyard wedding for 60 people. Doris was easy to work with, had great ideas and everything was as I'd hoped and envisioned. The food was delicious and plentiful. The staff was amazing and I got compliments on everything. Doris would have helped more, and offered but I love to do the details and rental etc. She would have done "soup to nuts" if I'd wanted her to. Loved every minute and will hire Now That Was a Great Party again and I think my family would too! Thanks Doris and your Gals for making it easy and my dream.

JP and his team were fantastic and we look forward to working with him again. He catered an event for 120 guests the night before our wedding so it was pretty important to us that it went right! The food was delicious, we still have friends telling us how much they loved it. He really goes above and beyond to ensure a good experience and provided us with many more dishes than we had anticipated. I would absolutely recommend him.

Omg! The fried chicken was better than my southern-born grandmother’s. Beautiful presentation and the taste; out of this world! Not one complaint from my team. Plentiful, scrumptious and Chef Shawna was sweet and super accommodating. I cannot wait until our next staff retreat!!!! Bravo Brooklyn Kitchen Catering!

My fiancé and I are working with Germaine for our wedding next summer. Working with her has been absolutely amazing. Our favorite quality about Germaine is how passionate she is about the work she does. She has a background and love for production, as well as experience and talent as a chef. This combination makes her such an awesome planner. My fiancé and I will be getting married being recent college grads, so our budget was definitely limited, but Germaine has been working with us to make sure we still have a quality and beautiful wedding that fits within our budget. She has many connections with all the different vendors she works with, and truly makes it so that your wedding planning process is fully stress-free. She is extremely professional and holds herself to a high standards, and on a personal level is so kind and personable. I truly hope others get to experience her amazing work both as a full service planner and as a chef!

My experience with Ativa Rembert and Frecklez Nik-Naks was absolutely wonderful. Ativa was very responsive throughout the planning. She informed me on every step she was taking. I was planning my wedding from Europe for our wedding reception at an art gallery in Hoboken, NJ and she made it easy. Since we couldn't be there to taste her food, we sent a good friend to do it and he loved it. We had decided on a Thai menu for the event because we both love Thai food. The groom's family flew in from Italy and my side is from the area. She created a perfect menu that everyone enjoyed. Her staff comprised her sister and her mother (who looks like another sister) and they were always gracious and attentive to all our needs. When we ran out of water, they quickly ran to get more. They set up and cleaned up in a timely manner and their demeanor was always positive and upbeat. Since they keep it in the family, they are all invested in their business so they all take care of every aspect. They were dressed perfectly and always wore a lovely smile on their faces, which made everyone feel at ease. I was very happy with Ativa and her family and I highly recommend them for your event. Our wedding was exactly what we wanted it to be and that is thanks to Ativa and her company, Frecklez Nik-Naks. Thank you all so much!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
