Sal is awesome! he is a dog whisperer. after only one training session my pup was already improving. he gave me advice on how to pick better quality food/treats for my furry friends, which was really helpful. he really has so much love and knowledge that made working with him so pleasant. another thing that i loved is that he encourages positive, happy training that allows you to bond even more with your pup. i noticed how much even my pup loved him, definitely recommended!!

Wonderful experience with Suzanne who has worked beautifully with our 10 month old dog and was able to give us lots of practical advice to train the dog. Suzannne was also very good with the children, helping them understand their role in the dog's training.

Words can't describe how much Ariana means to us. After rescuing a 72lb AmStaff with behavioral issues, we asked Ariana to help guide us through training our sweet, strong boy. Ariana's tireless patience, humor and knowledge made training our dog a fun, bonding experience instead of a stressful one. Her commitment to ensuring our collective success and a healthy, happy dog was evident in every hour she spent with us. Work with Ariana- she is a joy who also knows her dog training stuff!

Joan is a kind and loving person, and brings these qualities to her superb dog training. She helped Sidney Cha-Cha, our miniature poodle pup, with anxiety and incessant barking. We are grateful for her assistance, and our dogs will miss her presence in our home. Highly recommended!

Andrew was excellent! He is very relaxed and clear with instructions, and knew just how to get my dog, Pippin, to love him from the first moment they met. I'd done some training on my own with Pippin, but we reached a road block where I wasn't sure how to continue to make progress with him. Andrew helped break the steps down to be really manageable, and with some consistent homework on my part, we made huge leaps! Where we started: Pippin knew a few commands like sit and lay down while in the house, but whenever there were new people, other dogs or distractions, he would get hyperactive and wouldn't listen at all... On walks, most of the time it was like he didn't even realize I was there, and it was almost impossible to catch his attention. Where we ended up after training with Andrew: Pippin is now MUCH more polite when greeting people and other dogs, walks calmly outside and is a great listener! Even friends and family members have commented on how calm, relaxed and obedient he has become! I'm thrilled that by using the techniques we covered with Andrew, Pippin and I have developed a stronger bond and healthier habits that will ultimately keep him safer on our outings. Thanks, Andrew!!

Marie said it all in her review of Max but I can add that Anna understands dogs and how they think extremely well but will not waste time either psychoanalyzing nor anthropomorphizing your dog-- instead she will get down to the task of really training him and training you to continue on that path. Our dog, Max is a very trainable dog but with Anna I realized that whatever this training may be, it HAS to be reinforced on a daily basis. This is obvious to those who know about training but something that is good to remind oneself of regardless! We are really happy with the results.

Sean Ryan is quite simply, the best of the best. He is honest, straight forward, supportive, and encouraging. The investment in training with City Wolves is priceless. When I sent my rescue dog Levon to training he was nervous and fearful to a debilitating level. He was great with people, great with dogs, but absolutely horrible with modern technology. The sound of a car door shutting would send him scrambling for the hills and he was afraid to walk on any kind of indoor flooring. The entire process was exceptional, Sean kept me posted on all of his progress and provided status updates constantly. After four weeks in the Board & Train program, Levon was a completely different dog. Sean gave him a base level of confidence which I could simply never have provided him with. His approach with dogs is very intelligent, calm and respectful. He provided me with the tools to work together and communicate with Levon. I'm confident that his board and train program is the absolute best offered in our area. Structured, safe, and just an amazing environment for a dog to be in when they aren't at home. Sean continues to provide support, answer questions and genuinely shows that he cares long after the training session is complete.

I have two dogs, a fox hound and a weimeraner. The two dogs would violently fight with each other, which was very scarey indeed. The weimeraner was impossible for me to walk on the leash and he had separation anxiety. Rick assessed these issues right away! Within the first session, I was able to handle walking my dog, with pleasure. Then he worked on the aggression issue and it's been a year since the training and there has not been one fight between them. Also, the weimeraner is able to spend extended periods of time alone without issue now. If you are looking for a trainer, Rick is, without question, the best out there.

Joshua was amazing with my families two dogs. He genuinely cares about the dogs he works with and is great with them. Our puppy is doing so much better and has come such a long way thanks to him. Even after the training sessions were complete Joshua was still there months later to help me with any questions or concerns that I had. Would recommend Backcountry K-9 to everyone who is looking for a very experienced and caring trainer. Thank you!

Truly fantastic and unique dog training experience. Chelsea had so much patience and genuine interest as I spoke with her (endlessly, on multiple occasions) about all of my concerns about my 11-year old adopted Shiba mix who grew up as a street dog in China. Gingko has not been an easy dog for me to deal with, but Chelsea has helped me not only manage but understand her barking and snapping behaviors. She's not just interested in obedience - she wants to help create a symbiotic relationship between you and your dog, so that each of you are happy and safe. I always imagined training to be just lots of clicker-treat-clicker-treat stuff (doesn't work with Gingko, who thinks treats are a trap). But Chelsea's full of clever, practical, and easy solutions that prevent unwanted behaviors from happening in the first place. Can't recommend her highly enough.

Laura is a pro. She's knowledgeable, responsive, passionate and kind. I adopted a puppy recently and hired Laura for 3 training sessions. Even before Biggie arrived, Laura proved to be immensely valuable. She provided lists of all of the items I should have on-hand, including food and toy recommendations, and she even helped me find a vet and a dog walker. Once the sessions started, Laura arrived on time with a clear curriculum and format. She was organized and direct and taught Biggie (and me!) the essentials around crate training, focusing, sitting, meal time, walking on a leash and more. As a first time puppy owner, I was totally lost before I met Laura. She's incredible, and I highly recommend her. Laura is not only great at what she does, but it's clear she loves her job as well.

Gus gave us excellent advice and educated us so that we better understand our dog's behavior. Our rotties responded very well to him and his training techniques and we are continuing to work on training them ourselves. I am more confident now, that we can do this! Thank you Gus!

I have known Rachel (and her dog Dustin) for years and they are both terrific. Rachel took care of my border collie, Winston, for many years - - and he loved her. I totally trusedt Rachel with Winston - - and would trust her with any dog I owned or was responsible for. She understands dogs and is super at training. Dustin, Rachel's own dog, is a master of tricks - self-taught by Rachel - - and she did a great job. I feel very comfortable recommending Rachel to care for your dog.

Shana is training our Golden, Delilah, to be my service dog. She has tremendous patience, calmness and firmness with Deli. Shana helps her stay on on a straight and narrow path walking thru all the stores in Roosevelt Mall. The mall was over crowded today due to the holiday and Shana kept Deli calm and focused on her training.

My 8 month old shar pei was a good dog. Smart too but true to his breed he was stubborn!! I had tried other trainers who helped but he needed more. Hiring JOLEAN at k9 advanced was the best choice I made!! She worked wonders w my dog and he truly tested her expertise and skill!! He was a true challenge for her but I now have a well trained dog and friend. Jolean was dedicated and determined that he be the dog I hoped he would be. I am very thankful to Jolean and highly recommend her. She far exceeded my expectations.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
