Jason took the time to read my sprinkler repair requirement (including limited schedule window) and he provided a tailored response that made selecting him a no-brainer. He arrived early to my appointment, quickly diagnosed the problem, explained to me what he was doing each step of the way, and was thorough. I recommended Jason to a next-door neighbor half-way through my appointment! I also recommend him to you fellow thumbtack Users!

FANTASTIC! Cal is responsive, knowledgeable, trustworthy, and highly competent. He and Sebastian got to work on my projects (weather stripping around doors and building shelves) and delivered quality work. Will definitely hire again.

Art did some exterior painting and replaced weather stripping around my garage door and side door. He replaced my kitchen faucet. He did what he said he was going to do, for the price we agreed upon, and I was happy with the work. He was polite and respectful. The only criticism I have is that he rescheduled several times (without a lot of notice), but at least one of those times was my fault -- he couldn't find the right part and I ended up ordering it online, which saved me money.

We hired Charlie from Jays painting to paint the inside of the house that we are moving out of. We wanted to get it looking like it did when we first moved in before handing over the keys. When I walked in it looked like a brand new house. He did an amazing job. He was done very fast. He is very professional and easy to communicate with. We had shopped around. He gave us an awesome deal. I would recommend him and hire him for any painting needs. Thank you!!

I've been looking for a handyman for a long time. I've found him! I needed a small ramp built, a sprinkler repair and bedroom door replaced. The owner and his two staff were very friendly, did great work, and cleaned up when finished. I enjoyed having them in my home. They provide a broad spectrum of services, so I can't see where I will have to look elsewhere for future fixes. As close to a one-stop shop as you could hope for with great customer service to boot. I didn't know such a thing even existed anymore.

I hired Hemakana Builders for a kitchen tile job. The owner, Michael Nonies, did such an amazing job on the tile that I asked him if he could also do electrical work. He is very good with the electrical work also. He installed a light fixture above our bar and made such a clean job of it, that it looks original to the ceiling. He is very tidy with his work, no matter what he's doing, he keeps the area clean. Michael is very talented and can do beautiful work of almost any kind. I will call on him again whenever I need anything done. There were also times when I had to leave him alone in the home, and I had complete confidence in his trustworthiness. Thank you Thumbtack for bringing such competent tradesmen to my door.

Extremely pleased with David's work. He fixed all six things on my list. From carpentry to replacing a window and installing a door track, just to name a few of the things. Very reasonable. I will hire him again, next time I have something to be done.

My Water Heater pipe broke in my house and flooded almost my entire house at least 1/2 inch enough to ruin my flooring, walls and doors. Jody was quickly to respond. He worked with my insurance and even upgraded my floors, painted the entire inside of my house, fixed items that were not covered by insurance all for the amount the insurance gave me. I didn't have to come out of pocket for anything he did and I have a brand new house, better then before. He did everything in the timeline he told me. We had contact daily and sometimes even a few time a day. I would recommend him to anyone. Thank you for giving me a beautiful home.

Darren came in to bid replacing a couple of doors. However, I discovered he had additional skills for some remodeling projects that I also needed. He installed 2 custom sized doors, rekeyed door locks, installed a storm door, built and replaced 3 large wood gates, extensive interior painting, wall paper removal, replace some loose floor tiles, removed a recessed medicine cabinet. Since the house was empty he was able to knockout a lot of work in 7 days just before and right after Christmas. Prices were very reasonable and included supplies. He showed up on time every day, did everything we discussed and needed, was extremely reliable and does a nice job of cleaning up. Gave us helpful hints for future DIY items as well. He has a great deal of knowledge, good personality, is reliable and trustworthy and communicates well w/female homeowner. We will definitely use him again in the future. I concur w/another reviewer that if I could keep him to myself for all my projects I would. C Bradbury, Albuquerque

As part of our current kitchen update project, MSD Painting Services re-textured the ceiling beyond expectations (expert & beautiful!), and painted ceiling, walls, trim, and door to excellent result. Moises is a very efficient craftsman with high standards and clean habits. We’re looking forward to more interior painting and plan to hire MSD Painting Services if at all possible.

I had them do a variety of tasks (installed flooring in bathroom, painting, constructing a kitchen drawer, paint out-door wrought iron, replace wood exterior door, hauling, replace a sink, repair faucets) and they did a great job. They showed up on time every morning on time, and were easy to work with. I had one complaint about how the bathroom floor went down and they were very receptive to the feedback and changed it right away. I would definitely hire them again for similar work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
