Eddie's very good with getting back to you and keeping you abreast of what's going on with the repair. He's done quite a few jobs for me the last several months so he's been my go to guy for electricals.

Rick is truly the real thing as a handyman, professional but yet friendly. He hung two bike racks, and a 14 foot ladder in the garage. In the kitchen he repaired two drawers. Also, did some stucco work? Great price and prompt. I would definitely recommend him again. Esther W.

Vic came to my home to repair an electrical issue and a door casing. The electrical wiring ended up being much more complicated and actually required an electrician and Vic was honest enough to tell me that. He returned the next day to fix the door casing and did an awesome job. I felt comfortable alone with Vic in my home. He was on time though I wasn't and did his work promptly. I am pleased to say I now have a handyman, Vic. We already have other projects scheduled. Thanks Vic!

Within minutes of submitting my request on Thumbtack, I received a response and general ballpark quote from Ed with Centennial Glass & Glazing Co. I called Ed and he was able to come over within the hour to look at and repair the window. Not only was Ed able to repair the window but I also had him take a look at our floating shower door which had been slowly slipping out of alignment. Ed had the parts and equipment onsite to fix the shower door in addition to the window. Ed was courteous, professional, and easy going. He also charged the original quoted price. I will definitely be calling Centennial Glass when we move into our new home for repairs and replacement. A great find!

I was so thrilled to find SCA via Thumback. I had ordered a completely new set of furniture for my home office from Amazon. I had checked the "include assembly" option for approximately $200, but after their provider said it would be more I decided to give Thumbtack a try and I'm so glad I did. Within minutes I heard from Amanda who quoted me a very reasonable rate/estimate of time. Vincent called exactly half an hour before his planned arrival as promised and was very pleasant and personable from the second I opened my front door. Not only was he a pleasure to work with, but he did the entire job (four pieces of office furniture and the chair my cat took over immediately as shown in the picture) in half the time quoted. I'm so happy with the service received that I will be calling them back as soon as the bookcase/hutch/guest chair I ordered arrived.

I needed to replace a few GFI in my home, however I didn't have the replacements ready for him to install when he arrived. Dan was nice enough to go to the home improvement store and purchased them for me since I was home bound. I also needed to replace a screen on the patio door. He graciously did that at a very reasonable price since it was an impromptu project. Definitely recommend Dan and will call upon him for future home repairs.

Al was great. He was responsive and easy to schedule a time with to get together. He’s down to Earth and clearly has experience in many trades around the house (He was at my house to repair drywall but took on a job to fix a fan and succeeded with ease). He was courteous and even made a trip to the store to get paint and a part required for the fan. I was happy with and trusting of his character to leave the house for over an hour to take care of some errands. No complaints whatsoever. Let him be the one to take on your next project

Great service. Originally quoted $199 but I requested additional services and was easily accommodated. Had two people working from 10:30am to 5pm for total of $399. Home was spotless when they left, and they did everything I asked. I was so pleased that I have hired him to return and conduct weekly service. In addition to cleaning he is capable of handyman services as well.

A One Carpet Cleaning did a tremendous job cleaning a couch that was left for ruin by previous roommates! It looks and smells brand new! The customer service from Lisa and Renee were top notch, as Lisa was quick to respond to my request via the Thumbtack Application, and had somebody at my home the next morning! Would highly recommended if you are looking for any type of heavy duty cleaning!!!

I highly recommend Nemas Electric. I’ve worked with a few electricians through Thumbtack in the past but none whose work was worthy of a positive review. Sal was a true professional and clearly certified in his industry. He was able to identify a few very serious issues I had in my home and quickly worked to resolve them. I finally found an electrician who I can trust and I will recommend him to family and friends. I’ll be working with Sal again for other lighting projects in my home in the near future!

Mark showed up on time and had my gate fixed in no time flat. Even showed me how to tighten springs so I could do it myself next time. I then hired him to return the next day for a few more repairs that were driving us crazy. A ballast on a flickering light and a door latch replaced.advised me on a fireplace that won’t light. Call the gas Co. Honest man! We will definitely call him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
