I have a 3 year old Belgian Malinois (Dex) that has a great deal of energy but is very smart. I was having some obedience issues with him that I wanted to address in an official manner. I conducted a lot of research regarding dog trainers in the area. My goal was to find someone who possessed a great deal of expertise in training dogs, someone I could trust to get Dex on track with basic obedience and maybe teach him more advanced skills as well. My research led me to Off Leash K9. I read up on Willie Harrell, his vast experience with K9's and training, as well as the numerous positive reviews of his training programs. I contacted him and set Dex up for the two week in-house board and train program. Dex started April 1st with one of Mr. Harrell's trainers, Daniel Clark. I was updated via E-mail and videos during the course of his training as to his progress. I was very impressed with how quickly he advanced in his training. When his training period was complete, last Saturday, I met with Mr. Clark and he went over Dex's new skills, as well as the training collar, in detail. Mr. Clark told me Dex was very smart and learned all of the basic skills in a couple days so he worked with him on some more advanced skills for the remainder of the program. He asked me several times as we went along if I felt comfortable with, and understood, what he was telling me. He went above and beyond to ensure I understood the instruction, the proper use of the collar, and Dex's new capabilities. He was genuinely concerned with making sure I had everything down. Since Dex returned home, I've been working with him on his new skills to get him even more dialed in on some of the more advanced things he learned. Mr. Clark has checked up on us a few times already too since I got Dex back. I cannot express with enough emphasis how much the training program helped Dex, me, and my family. Prior to his training, Dex was always first to the door. He would do about 10 spins before I got there and would literally bash his face through the door on his way out and back in. Now he knows door manners...so he sits and waits until I give him the command before going out or coming in. He also knows sit, down, come, place, heel, touch, extended sit/down, come to heel and through. I'm so grateful to Off Leash K9, to Willie Harrell, and especially to Daniel Clark for training Dex and making him the accomplished and well-behaved dog he now is. I couldn't have done it without them. I highly recommend consideration of Off Leash K9 for your dog training needs. I certainly will look to them again in the future for any advanced training I wish to pursue with Dex. Thank you Off Leash K9!

I was privileged to have Denise Owens, dog trainer, help me She helped me with my lab. She helped me with manners, obedience, and walking my dog. She used to have pack walks with other dogs in the park. She is very innovative, communicates well with animals and their owners. I would definitely use her again for any dog.

Melissa is extremely knowledgeable about the GSD breed and is a highly experienced (GSD) dog trainer. Prior to our first session, she researched our GSDs blood line to truly understand the behavioral issues that need addressing for him, and took the time to get the full history from us. She outlined a clear program for training us and our 5 year old GSD, breaking it down into manageable steps for my husband and I, busy schedules and all. I knew from our correspondence prior to meeting in person that she was "the one" - she is the real deal and we are lucky to have found her to help us with our dog's fear aggression issues.

I've enjoyed reliable, friendly, and fun dog walking and dog sitting from Reliable Pet Care. I even came home one day to find a note that my walker had taught my tiny pup to walk up the stairs, a feat I had been attempting without success for days!

Not at all what I expected. We expected Anniina to train our dog, she did not. She trained us. Very little time was spent with Keechie, he wasn't the problem, we were and Anniina helped us realize that he was just a scared little dog and he was acting exactly the way we let him act. I found Anniina respectful, honest, knowledgeable, and would recommend her to my friends. Dennis Erickson

I have used a number of trainers for other rescue doggies. Stacey is totally different. My current rescue doggie was very fearful and pretty skittish. Stacey came to my house and worked with us for about 3 hours and I was absolutely amazed at the progress in that short amount of time. He is more of a dog psychologist, rather than a typical trainer. He understands what the dog is afraid of and gets him to understand how to be calm and listen to what you are asking of him. By the time he was gone he was a different doggie altogether. He learned to hear what I am saying to him and to realize that I am in command, not him. By the time he left he was walking with me and not running in front, stopping when I stopped. He was not running out of the house and staying when I told him to. He definitely now realizes I am the leader of the pack, not him.

I live in Los Angeles and travel to Vegas often and always bring my dog, Schnoopy with me. I had an all day business commitment that didn't allow me to bring him along and I'm not use to ever leaving him alone for more than three hours. Lynn was recommended to me so I called her up and asked if she would meet with me beforehand so that she could meet Schnoopy, it was clear that she was a true animal lover the ways she interacted with him. I could see my little Schnoopy felt comfortable around her. I'm extremely over-protective about Schnoopy and gave her very detailed instructions about his care, which she took very seriously. The next day while she watched him she sent me frequent updates and pictures. Lynn was wonderful with him and super accommodating to my last minute request for a dog-sitter. My only complaint is that she lives in Vegas and I wish she lived in LA so she could watch him here! Thank you Lynn! Licks from Schnoopy!

The only thing better than being a dog at Cherie's place is being the owner of a dog who gets to stay at Cherie's place! I'm an overprotective doggy mom. I admit it. When I took a job working 12 hour days, I knew I'd have to board my baby. Boarding. Kennels. Ugh. Just those words made my stomach turn. I searched all over Vegas, and just by luck, Cherie was officially opening the week I started work! No kennels? All small dogs?? Overnight care??? Yes! I was nervous, so Cherie suggested a meet and greet. The first good sign was that she was firm about the drop off procedure. She asked me to text or call when I got there, then she would let me in. I like that she didn't want clients just strolling up to her door and sending all of the dogs into a barkstorm by ringing the bell. Smart move. Her back yard is double gated for security, even the pool is gated, and she uses a gated side door to transfer pups to/fro their owners. The first thing I noticed when I walked in is how calm it was. The lights were soothingly low, the temperature was cool, and the dogs (I think there were nine that day!) were excited to see a new kid, but not one of them showed even the slightest hint of aggression. My dog hasn't been around many other dogs, so I was hesitant to throw him in the mix, but after a few tries at convincing me, Cherie just said, "relax, put him down. He's fine. Sheesh." So I did. And just like she said, he was fine! The visit went really well, so I dropped him off the next morning. Luckily, I'm working nearby, so Cherie agreed to let me visit him in the evening. That night, I fully expected my dog to come running to me, jump into my arms, and curl into a please-take-me-home ball. What I got was an "oh, hey, hi! I love you! Ok I'm gonna go play now!" Wagwagwag, back to his new friends. Ha! I was thrilled! Cherie has offered me to visit for several hours each night that she will have him. She took care of me and my dog! She let me lay on the floor and play with the pack, and she even shared her dinner with me! Plus, she knew that my dog is a finicky eater, so she shared her supply of pricey fresh dog food packets with my pup! Cherie is very honest, and though the vibe of the house is relaxed, she runs a tight ship. If she sees something that might help your dog acclamate to her home, she's gonna say it. In fact, she speaks her mind on any dog related issue, and I respect that. She just wants the dogs to do their dog thing and be happy. There are lots of ways she could make a lot more money. She rescues and cares for dogs because it's in her soul. Oh, and did I mention that she got my dog to swim for the first time ever? Holy smokes. Go drop your dog off. You'll be doing him/her a favor!

I'm pleased to report that I hired Richard to look after my dogs and keep the area of their yard clean, while I went out of town on business for two weeks. He did a terrific job! Richard came over to my home a couple of times each day while I was away, and fed my dogs, filled water bowls, played with them, and kept their areas of my home and the yard cleaned. He met my dogs a few days before I left town and it was obvious that he's a dog lover. When I got back into town it was plain to see that my dogs loved Richard! I'll hire him again in an instant whenever I need him in the future to take care of my dogs or work on things around my home! Thanks Richard!

I took both my dogs to Sin City K9 to have them trained. Rich and his staff are amazing and made our lives so much easier now that we can take our dogs out in public and not have to worry about them misbehaving. I would recommend anyone looking for a great dog trainer who not only takes the time to train your dog, but also you as to problem solve and handle things when he is not around. I now get compliments from people about how well trained my dogs are when we are out on our walks.... Thank you so much Rich!!!!!

The most wonderful experience. It's very hard to find a trainer for a working dog, especially a service dog. My German shepherd Denali is now a official service dog through training by Sterling Ridge K9. He's my whole world, and I'm so blessed. Kristina changed my life and gave me my confidence to go out again and feel safe through my boy. I had been needing a service dog for a few years but I couldn't afford thousands to train with a society or any trainer wasn't capable or offering it. We are getting back out there! Thank you so much for everything.

Flax would bark at every sound and pull very hard on the leash when walking. I needed someone to come to me (my home) and Keynoe did just that, see I wanted my dog Flax to be home so that it was in the environment that he was just to. Keynoe suggested 4 sessions but I actually had Flax train with him for 6 because for the last two sessions my entire family was able to participate which was great. I would totally recommend this service for all behavior needs!

Our Belgian Malinois, Sophie, was 11 months old and a very active dog when we contacted Ken at Taggs K9 for her pulling on leash and leash aggression. Sophie spent 3 weeks with Ken and his pack. I felt very comfortable knowing that Sophie was in a caring, safe environment. His video updates showed us the progress she was making daily. At the end of 3 weeks, Ken brought Sophie to our house and worked with us demonstrating Sophie's new skills and how to use her new collars when walking her and reinforcing her new found good manners! She is now such a well behaved family member and is training to be a service dog. We take her everywhere and get many compliments on her good behavior. Thank you so much, Ken, for bringing out the best in Sophie!

Our dogs LOVE Raven & Jonathan! They know where they are going, as soon as we take the turn into their neighborhood, they start barking & going crazy! When I open the door to let them out, they run over to their door and greet them with kisses, followed by their "group chat" with their dogs. It makes me laugh. Such sweet dogs they make our dogs feel so welcome. Raven & Jonathan's place has become Max and Henry's other home when we leave town. It shows they genuinely care for and love dogs. They are awesome sending updates with pictures and videos. It really makes traveling non-stressful. We are fortunate to have been referred to them.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
