This is the first time I have used Thumbtack to hire an Interior Design specialist and Elena has been outstanding in every way. She is very professional, has a keen eye for the subtleties of color, and works hard to ensure you are happy with the project. I am so impressed by her attention to detail and punctuality to all meetings. My project is designing for an office interior and I recommend her without hesitation.

I started using Pamela's services about 8 years ago. I own several rental/vacation properties in town. She has stripped and restained cabinets, chose paint colors and then painted (all four of the interiors of my houses, & exterior of my 2 story 3000 SF house), chose wallpaper, granite, flooring, hardware, fixtures, drawn remodel plans, oversaw all plumbing & electrical work, & worked with my contractor for larger projects. She personally tiled my kitchen counters with Galaxy granite and refaced my fireplace to match. She also installed a glass backsplash, & gave my kitchen the wow it needed on a tight budget! I have been impressed with her hands on capabilities and knowledge. Pamela has a keen eye for picking colors, flooring, hardware, counters, styles, etc. Her ability to understand what people want is uncanny: She can see the forest through the trees. She can design a space that not only keeps pace with current style trends but keep it unique enough to not just be another carbon-copy. My last property took the cake. She fully furnished my entire 4 bedroom vacation rental including all linens, kitchen appliances, cooking supplies., beds, furniture, and all items needed to be a fully functional vacation rental & staged everything by herself. It bears mentioning that I give her a very tight and strict budget, and she always finds a way to make everything look expensive & sticks to the budget I've set. I never have to lift a finger when I hire Pamela. This last job she did prompted me to write about my experiences the past eight years (& seeing some pictures on her profile of work she's done for me throughout the years). My guests always comment on the house and I can only say "thank you, Pamela did it" She has great vision, work ethic, and will treat you right. I recommend her services fully.

Metrospace Design was an excellent choice in transforming our Tuscan decorum to a contemporary interior design. The designer was responsiveness and patient with us as we wrestled with the look we wanted to achieve. The selection of fabrics for the furniture, draperies, rugs, etc. were very coordinated. The contracted supports to get the design completed were exceptional individuals. We are loving our home. Sophia M.

My husband and I had recently purchased a home in Henderson, NV after moving from Los Angeles. We had never worked with an interior designer before, thinking only " rich people" use them. Having neither the time nor the desire to run all over town, shopping for furniture and home accessories, European Flair Designs with Jenae Hightower was recommended to us. What a wonderful experience it was! The first time Jenae came to our home, it was like she was part of the family. She is incredibly warm and down to earth. We spoke about what our vision was for our home as well as our budget. Which by the way, we can in under budget by $2.00!! We had four empty rooms, a great room, living room, office and dining room, which needed everything from rugs on the floor to paint on the walls, and everything in between. Janae worked tirelessly, it seemed 24/7, asking for our input the entire time. She is professional, knowledgeable and so easy to work with.We now have a beautifully furnished home, thanks to European Flair Designs. Words cannot express our gratitude to Janae Hightower for making our house a home. Five giant stars!!!

Tracy is amazing!! To say that she did an outstanding job, is an understatement! Once I interviewed her, I knew by the questions she asked, she was the right person for the job. Communication was extremely important because I was living in Texas and wouldn’t meet her until the day I moved in. There were some very specific things I wanted as well as other things I gave her creative decision over. She hit it out of the park on both!! Her communication throughout the job continued to be outstanding. She was flexible to meet around my time zone and work schedule. She did an excellent job hiring and working with other contractors needed for the job. It didn’t feel as if I hired someone, it was like I had a friend looking out for my best interest. She went over the top looking for the best price for the quality and she was able to keep my costs down and within budget. Not only did I ask her to turn a plain, small empty apartment into a warm, contemporary home, I also asked her to keep it a secret as it was a surprise for my mother. I ask my mother to write her feelings about when she walked in the door of the apartment for the first time: To Anyone Looking for an Interior Designer: To say that the "surprise unveiling" of our new apartment was AWESOME, just isn't enough!!! I knew nothing about my daughter's plan to surprise me with a completely decorated apartment when we arrived at our new location in Henderson, Nevada. The entire apartment was decorated, but my room and bathroom were what were so very special to me!! Everything was perfect! The colors, fabrics and accessories that Tracy selected for my area were right on point! Tracy really listened to my daughter's description of what I was like and what I might like for decorations and what my style might be. I absolutely love my room and bath and haven't changed a thing I would recommend her decorating services to anyone! In addition to being a very talented decorator, she is genuinely a very nice person and I'm very happy that my daughter found her. Yours very truly, Carolyn I can never repay Tracy for creating a magic moment for my mother and myself! She was able to blend two different generations beautifully just by listening. Her passion truly shows in the quality of work that she does. If you want the best, Tracy is the real deal!!

Amazing designs and well rounded, experienced designer. Its obvious the knowledge and experience that Ozzy has. He worked patiently with us on our remodel and guided us from beginning to end with the expertise needed to execute this project properly. From the finishes to the exterior, everything is exactly what we imagined. While remodeling a home is challenging, we are glad to have had the help and guidance we had to make our expectations a reality!

Working with Angela Britt was an absolutely astounding experience. She was able to marry my husband's and my tastes to come up with ideas that we both loved (which is no small undertaking). During each portion of the process, Angela gave us options to select from and helped us be able to visualize the outcome of our design choices. I have never encountered such a VIP treatment. Every time a vendor was scheduled at our house, Angela met with them directly and stopped by after the fact to make sure everything was done properly. Even her vendors were perfectionists - the painters vacuumed behind the couches before moving them back. I would never hesitate to recommend Angela to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
