Rick is truly the real thing as a handyman, professional but yet friendly. He hung two bike racks, and a 14 foot ladder in the garage. In the kitchen he repaired two drawers. Also, did some stucco work? Great price and prompt. I would definitely recommend him again. Esther W.

Best handyman hands down! I originally contacted Dan to mount my tv's, 5 of them ranging in sizes from 42"- 65". While he was there I discovered some other things I would need help with. He ended up fixing my fridge, installing 5 ceiling fans and installing my washer and dryer. He was super flexible with my schedule and prices were very reasonable! I will hire Dan for any future handyman needs. You should too!

So refreshing to experience an honest plumber. Jason responded quickly and came to give me a quote on fireplace repair the same-day. He checked everything and got the gas pilot light on and it's working. No need for repair. Funny that home inspector couldn't get it to work, and said there was a problem. I will use Pacheco plumbing in the future.

Hector from ProServ called me as agreed upon 1/2 hour before he was arriving so I had time to get to the house from work. He was very professional and courteous and discovered a simple solution to my problem that didn't cost me anything. He did recommend replacing a valve at the back of my refrigerator, but wasn't pushy about it, and he called me later with an estimate. I told him I would get it done but not immediately, and he said my discount off the service (the $49 I paid for the service call) was good for 30 days. I was very impressed and would use them again.

We hired Randy to fix/repair just a few items and ended up having him do a plethora of things around the house. My wife and I are both disabled and cannot do a lot of things that we used to do. Anyway, Randy was spot on and took care of these jobs (replacing/repairing bathroom fans, designing our garage and installing storage systems and racks, installing new lighting fixtures, both indoors and outdoors, etc.) for us for a fair and very reasonable price. He's such a nice guy and knows how to do nearly everything!! His work is exemplary and he's very upfront about his estimates and what needs to be done for the job to come off just perfectly. He was right on time, EVERY time

I had a wooden fence that was leaning over. Called one guy and he completely did a shoddy job. Thankfully, I then called Harold who came over and fixed it the right way. Great attitude and very helpful in finding the best way to make the repair at the lowest cost for me.

I have a disability, so I'm not remotely handy. Lamont's handled big and small jobs for me. He's assembled beds, desks, a console table and a futon for me. He's also done numerous repairs around my home. Good-natured and dependable.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes refrigerators?

Typically, appliance repair technicians who offer refrigeration repair also work with washers, dryers, dishwashers and other household appliances. While there is no formal training required to be an appliance repair technician, consider certification requirements, as the technician should know how to safely work with refrigerants (the chemical that keeps your fridge cold) and substitute refrigerants such as HFCs. You should also read reviews to get a sense of the pro’s experience and reputation. The appliance repair pro will come to your home, bringing all the necessary tools for diagnosis. They may need to order parts to complete the job, but all the work will take place in your home. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.
