Al responds quickly, answers the phone, and is very easy to work with. Arrived on time with his assistant, and got to work right away through several challenging tasks. He was courteous, and quickly adaptive with solutions to every problem. Stayed well beyond our scheduled time To hang a big canvas on a high wall. Highly recommended and clear and honest about his estimate.

WELDERS 1st CHOICE and TERRY will be my first choice for any welding work I or my friends may need. I had two custom gates made by Artistic Iron Works that took over 3 months to make and 3 visits to my home and after 3 different measurements a letter to the BBB. Visit by the Nevada State Board of Contractor’s Investigator Gary Copenhaver who said this work was acceptable, look at the pictures, what do you think I’m filing a complaint on them. I’m going to court now against Artistic Iron Works. I am now happy with my gates thanks to Terry and his company WELDERS 1st CHOICE. TERRY IS A HONEST MAN OF INTEGRITY AND TAKES PRIDE IN HIS WORK, AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. In 5 hours on site Terry refrabricated my gates in the blistering heat . Terry and his crew of two, cut down 6 inserts for holding glass cleaned up the welds and repainted. Cut new striker holes for deadbolts so I could remove the ugly plate that covered poorly drilled holes. Cut down post on west gate so height matched the wall and welded caps back on. East gate removed fence panel, and post. Removed all iron from house and wall. Repaired hole in stucco and block wall. Removed black silicone from wall cement. Repainted stucco and wall to match house and wall. Cut off 4 hole plates from wall section of fence. Installed appropriate 2 hole plates. Cleaned up welds and repainted and reinstalled level to wall. Cut off hinge side post from fence section, and moved it forward 5 inches. Cut plate and rewelded post level, and resecured plate in new location. Cut off one hole plate, 1” sleeve and 1 1/4 extension, between hinge post and fence. Installed more appropriate 1 1/2 material between hinge post and gate. Welded in screw hole and cleaned up affected area from old post location. Removed screws, silicone, and spacers from old post location. Removed screws and spacers from old location of posts and replaced with more appropriate 1 1/2 piece of material between hinge post and bottom of fence to match bottom rail of fence to strengthen post. Also, for a cleaner look , rehung gate. Cut down striker post , and welded to plate at proper height to match the decorative design of the gate, and concrete. Cut off tab at the bottom of striker post, as it was unnecessary, and added another plate to the top so the post was level. Moved post forward approximately 5” to match gate. Resecured plate flat to the ground. Resecured top tab with screw. Cut new striker hole for lock. Terry also repainted all areas he worked on including my brick stucco wall. He did not use any silicone to fill in bad craftsmanship. He used welds and good measurements and if corrections were needed he did the work over again. I wish I would have found WELDERS 1st CHOICE first would have same me time and frustration. You know when you find a good guy when other Welders know his work and recommend him. THANKS TERRY FOR FIXING MY HORRIBLE CUSTOM GATES. TERRY AND HIS CREW MADE IT RIGHT.

These guys are OUTSTANDING! I am so glad I hired Chris and Acacia. They helped us plan our project, pick colors, offered a lot of advice, and constantly thought about the "little things" that didn't occur to me to ask in advance. My favorite thing is that they suggested a few inexpensive touches that really gave our "track" home a custom feel. The quality of their work is fantastic. They were on-time, reliable, and efficient. They handled everything from installing flooring, repairing and patching drywall, cabinet painting, building new walls, installing crown and baseboard, and painting the entire house. I wholeheartedly recommend HK Paint & Drywall. Chris and his crew honestly cared about our home and made sure we would be happy with it for a long time to come. They are more than just hired contractors - they have become our friends. We are so glad we chose HK!

My husband and I were looking to have our kitchen backsplash done and a tile accent wall in our powder bathroom. We hired Jim because right away we appreciated his quick response to our request and he gave us a very fair quote. We are so happy we hired him! Jim takes his time on his projects, tells you exactly what proper materials are needed to finish your project, keeps you informed as he's working, and makes the right decisions as he tearing into projects instead of just taking short cuts. Not to mention he's a super nice guy! We are beyond happy with the outcome of our backsplash and accent wall. Thank you Jim for all your hard work and making our vision come to life! We will definitely be hiring you again for future house projects!

I had missing dry wall and a bunch of tiles gone after a visit by a plumber. It was a mess. Matt was outstanding. After a series of bad experiences with repair people he was a breath of fresh air. He arrived, he checked out my problem, he gave me an estimate of what the cost would be. Then he went across the street to our neighborhood Home Depot and bought the materials he needed for the job. He returned and worked straight through until the job was done. He was polite and all business. He cleaned up after himself and the price he charged was beyond reasonable. I would have no problem recommending him to anyone and I'm sure that I will use him again myself.

I had a damaged block wall in need of repair. Robert and his crew showed up at the time he said he would be here. They did everything that he estimated and cleaned up afterwards. Robert is very hands on and I have no problem recommending him in the future. I look forward to hiring him again in the future.

We hired Mike to install an extra doorway in one of our bathrooms. We wanted to be able to access it from the kitchen instead of having to walk around every time. I talked to Mike one time on the phone and the next day he showed up on time, looked at the job and measured. We talked about it cost the next day. Once we agreed on a price, we scheduled a day to do with he work, all I had to do was let him in. I couldn't be happier. He took a plain wall and made a doorway to the bathroom and it matched everywhere. It looks like it was always there!

I had a number of projects around my new house that I needed help with and found Jeremy Bertrand of Knight Carpentry & Construction through Thumbtack. Jeremy was absolutely wonderful. He accomplished everything from moving curtain rods that had been hung in the wrong place to repairing walls with anchors left in them to installing a dimmer switch and bathroom fixtures. He was extremely punctual, polite and a perfectionist in his work. He's also very experienced in home building and remodeling and able to do all types of repairs and remodeling in the home. I highly recommend him.

We hired Louie and his team to build our new wood patio cover that I've always wanted. They were on time, professional and did great workmanship. We interviewed a couple different contractors but Louie stood out among the rest with his knowledge, suggestions and diligence from start to finish. I could not be happier with the work they did and will be hiring them in the future for all of my home improvement work. My patio cover was completed just in time for summer. We Highly recommend you hire them when your needing a general contractor.

Mr Ramberg did an excellent job repairing a really large hole in my wall created by my clumsiness. He came out at the time the agreed upon time and was a genuinely nice person. Additionally, he did a great job for the price he charged. I'd highly recommend Mr Ramberg for any of your home repair and/or painting needs!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
