It was a pretty extensive staining woodworking job. 3 large wooden doors with window lights on each side needed to be sanded to the bare wood, re-stained, and sealed. Juan is definitely an experienced pro. About a half dozen other painters I called do not even 'do staining of doors'. The price was extremely fair for the amount of work and for the truly fantastic results. Thanks so much!

We hired Devon to build us a 12'x16' cedar pergola on our existing concrete patio. From the first meeting we felt at ease that he wasn't out to gouge us. He even provided us with an estimate from a previous job quite similar to ours. His actual bid was spot on to what he had quoted us. He started work when promised and finished in 2 days. He ensured we were happy with the finished project and told us to call with any questions. Our pergola turned out beautiful and Devon was great to work with. He made sure to clean up at the end of each day and left our patio looking better than he found it. I recommend Taylor Made to anyone looking for any sort of woodworking or construction period! Thanks Devon! We will be using you in the future for more projects!! Steph and Shari

I spoke with the owners/operators of Premier Design and Construction, LLC. This a small capable business for home repair and improvement. Owners Nick and Pedro are the labor force. They are each professional carpenters. They also have some very fine crafts folks at their disposal. Our project was to take a very large living room area and turn it into a comfortable living room and a formal dining room. We discussed with them our ideas which they put into a design and proposal. From our final approval Nick and Pedro began all the work demolishing the space as it was and providing an arched entry way into the space. They next built the dining room separator "pony" wall with storage drawers in it that would enclose our new dining room. . The dining room received heavy woodwork and wainscoting. The wood work was also provided in the living room. During the initial construction Premier Design and Construction provided plaster expert to care for the walls and plaster in the two rooms and an Electrician who installed an entire new electrical system for the new rooms We were now ready for our new flooring. We picked a very fine 6" X 24" porcelain wood grain tile planking that gave us an old hard wood flooring look. The Tile Setter they suggested was a Craftsman. He worked alone. In 3 days time he provided us with an amazing new floor that makes our rooms look exactly as we had envisioned for our "Victorian" look and feel to the rooms. Nick and Pedro returned to finish the woodwork by installing the base boards and "tweaking" their fantastic work. Our final step was having the spaces painted by a company we had used before for a very professional interior and exterior painting project. This project, that we felt was monumental, was made to look simple by Premier Design and Construction. They provided much needed advise along the was so there were no "emergency" decisions necessary by us to cause us more cost and more stress. Everything this company did was Professional, Meticulous, High quality work and products from start to finish. I highly recommend Premier Design and Construction for your major or minor remodels or additions at your home. These guys and their network of craftsmen are top quality in the field. WFH.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
