Tommy was great, professional, on time, and knew his work. Originally I went with a different contractor to finish my basement and after 3 days, he hadn't done much of anything. I got a hold of Tommy, and he was able to squeeze me in right away and finished the job in less than a week of me calling him! He did the taping of the drywall and the corners. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out! He always wants to make his customers happy and I'll definitely be hiring him again for future projects!

We hired Steve to install rough plumbing, a tub, shower door, and drywall and to skim coat 2 textured ceilings to make them smooth. We really appreciated Steve's transparency in his quote, as well as his quality and speed of work. Steve gave us a fair and detailed quote including expected time to finish. Steve and the guys he brought with him worked quickly without compromising quality. We are happy to be hiring Steve to do more work at our house later in the summer.

I needed old wood & chain link fence removed and new vinyl fence installed, as well as some painting & misc repairs. Brian sent me a proposal with prices for each part of the job. He explained everything as the job went along, was extremely courteous, professional and pleasant. Everything we agreed on was done & looks excellent. I would certainly recommend D&D if you're looking for a knowledgeable and capable General Contractor.

Marty and his team performed 2 jobs for me both with excellent results. First he repaired vynal fence that needed most posts reset, the popped up from frost and not being installed properly in the first place. Second he replaced old concerte walkways with new pavers, paver step to front porch and flower boxes on both sides of step. Could not be more happier with the results.

I have only positive statements about all aspects of Dan's work for us. He was prompt in communicating. He arrived on time. One part of the project (replacing ceiling tiles) became more complicated after he removed the old ones. His work was meticulous and my ceiling looks beautiful. He replaced sections of drywall and the taping looks great. In addition, he's a really nice guy. I plan on using him for future projects.

St Paul's Indian Orthodox Church used Anthony Berrios for two jobs. First job started as a potential toilet installation but turned into installing few shelves, spot light, adjusting a podium etc. The second job was completion of painting. Mr Berrios is very professional and does excellent work. He prides himself on the end result and meticulously works on even minor details. He is prompt and leaves a clean work space. Anthony really helped out in the second job. We had initially selected another contractor to paint the basement of the church. That contractor however left the job undone. I reached out to Anthony who accepted the job and completed the work. We also appreciated that Anthony doesn't consider any job to be too small. Anthony is going to be first contractor we call for our next job.

I hired Mr.Jaffe from Freehold Enterprises to renovate my kitchen and bathroom. I was on a budget and told him I couldn't make changes to original floor plan because I knew that would be costly. Well he came up with a new design plan for me that was not only more functional but gorgeous... and it didnt cost more. He transformed my kitchen. He took the time to pick out tiles with me and created beautiful borders for the kitchen and bathroom with the tiles. He just has a great artistic eye. He saved me money by doing this and the end result was stunning.. He actually cared. I gett so many compliments on my home now and it looks like a spent a ton of money , when in fact , I didnt. I tell you, he restored my faith in contractors again. Whenever he came across a problem, whether it was plumbing or electric, he took care of it without taking advantage. I would re hire him in a second . I will never use anyone else. Thank you to Freehold Enterprises for an amazing job!

There is not one single negative thing to be said about John and his work! We feel so blessed to have found him on Thumbtack! Good customer service has always been one of the most important factors my husband and I consider when hiring someone or rating our experience with any company. John exceeded our expectations on that issue. We are located 2000 miles away from our home that we rent out and found we needed to have lots of work done in between tenants. John not only did beautiful work (our sister-in-law kept us updated and sent photos along the way), he stepped up and baled us out of a tough situation when another contractor that we hired to do other work prior to hiring John seemed to be having time-management issues. Since we were faced with a tight deadline with new tenant arriving soon, John jumped in and got those jobs done in 2-3 days where we had already been waiting 6 weeks to have done by the other guy! This was on top of the jobs we originally hired him for. Now faced with more challenges that came up about other issues, John has proven to us that he is the guy that can be called on and trusted for anything! Thank you, John! Thank you, Thumbtack! (If Thumbtack allows me to come back later and update this review, I'll add photos that are on my phone.)

Andrew was a true professional and took care of replacing a foundational sill-plate on a home I was buying. The job appeared to be a difficult task to me, but Andrew found a way to fix it as if new! I would recommend him for any sort of job. He also gave me good tips on other minor repairs I might be in for in the future with the home, roofing, siding, etc. Andrew is very knowledgeable and trustworthy! I'd hire him again in an instant!

I bought a 4-family home as a foreclosure and Paul remodeled the entire home from top to bottom, kitchens, bathrooms, refinished floors, vinyl tile in the kitchens and bathrooms, did a mold remediation in the basement and made a laundry room, repaired the siding and painted and lots more. The apartments are beautiful. I would recommend Paul to anyone wanting to get some work done. He takes the time to do a proper job and does not cut corners like other contractors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
