Joan tutored our daughter for approximately a year, principally in preparation for the ACT English and Reading sections. She has now just started to work with our son. Joan is a superb tutor. She has a remarkable command of the subject matter and is a patient and skilled teacher. From day one, she had a well thought out plan to improve my daughter's core skills and she worked methodically with her week to week to ensure her success. As a result, my daughter absolutely crushed the English and Reading Sections on the ACT. This fall my daughter is heading off to an Ivy League school. Joan's skill and professionalism were important factors in helping my daughter achieve the sorts of test scores needed to be a serious candidate at the most highly selective schools. Joan tutored my son mostly through his college application phase, helping him to find his inner writer. Joan has given my son so many helpful insights into writing, that his high school teacher asked him if he was taking a writing course outside of school. For my son, he felt that he learned more with Joan than for all his years in English class. Joan has a wonderful way working with teenagers that empowers them to want to do better and better. My son looks forward to continuing to work with Joan to help with his reading aptitude before going off to college. Joan is a marvel in that she has so much knowledge to impart and she takes the time to educate her students.

Joan tutored our son with the ACT and the SAT and now she is tutoring our daughter. In both cases, she has quickly assessed where the kids needs the help and focused on those areas first. She also helps to determine if our children should focus on one test or the other given their individual testing skills. Through Joan's help our son was able to tremendously improve his scores. She has helped our daughter in a similar way and we expect our daughter to have improved scores as well. Her strategies have helped both kids to have confidence on test taking day. We thank Joan for all of her help. She will even help our daughter with preparing for her AP English exam as well.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I give need scholarships up to 10% of my income. If a student can't afford my services, she can ask for a scholarship and, if I have money left in my 10% fund, I will grant it.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was 14 when I got my first tutoring job. I never wanted any job other than teaching.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
An excellent tutor spends as much time learning as teaching. She has to learn about the subject, about the student, and about teaching. An excellent tutor is never finished learning. The material for discipline changes all the time, the student needs change, research uncovers new methods. An excellent tutor spends hours in preparation.
