Alex is a great teacher who helped me become a better and more confident drummer. I've played guitar and bass in bands in the past, but I wanted to branch out and learn drums to form a new band so I sought out Alex for lessons. He has really helped me understand the concepts I need to progress as a drummer. Been getting my chops up and hope to get the band gigging soon.Feb 16, 2018
Drum Lessons (for children or teenagers)
So far, so good. We had one lesson and Alex worked on the fundamentals. My 8-year-old kid learned right away.Mar 9, 2018Verified
I have been taking drum lessons from Alex for about 6 months. Alex was among three instructors to contact me on Thumbtack and I consider myself fortunate to have chosen him as my teacher. I have been playing drums on and off for over 50 years but I am mostly self-taught. I am currently in a classic rock band and Alex is helping me take my playing up to the next level. His musical knowledge is vast and his teaching style is relaxed but competent. I would not hesitate to recommend Alex to anyone regardless of their level of ability.Mar 27, 2018
Alex is awesome. He's been working with my 5 yr old son for awhile now on hand drums/rhythm. He's totally fostered his desire and love of music. My boy can't wait for each weekly lesson. Highly, highly recommend. Just don't steal our time slot ;))Jan 19, 2017
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? My typical first lesson with any student is centered around understanding the student's ability and interest. I may ask them to play a bit for me and ask them what type of music they like, etc. From there, I can quickly devise the best route for the student to pursue. Some students are more focused and work driven, others may be more distracted and less inclined to work hard. Yet, no matter what, I always find a way to keep the student intrigued, motivated, and progressing, even if they may not realize it themselves.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I have a B.A. in Jazz Performance from SUNY Purchase. This is an extremely sought after Jazz program, especially for drummers. While I was there I studied with three very notable drum teachers. John Riley is perhaps the most well-known and sought after jazz drum instructor around today. Kenny Washington, who teaches both at Purchase and Julliard, is equally notable as an instructor and has played with virtually every Jazz legend of and before his time. Richie Morales is right alongside with his credentials, playing with the Brecker Brothers, Mike Stern, Spyro Gyra, and many others.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?I have been banging on pots and pans since I was 2 years old and haven't stopped since.
