Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I have been in the pipe fitting/ combination welding business for close to 12 years now. I take pride in my work like any true mechanic does. For me the money make means nothing if my customers are not satisfied. I am the rookie of my crew! The majority of the pipe tech mechanical mechanics have 20-35 years plus and are all certified to weld x-ray . what don't I like about it is a better question. I am a hands on guy so I have no problem with doing the "grunt" work to get a job moving in a timely manner

Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

Hi Thumbtack, Bobby Saccente came to my house, cut a new fireplace damper plate, and replaced the one in the fireplace. He worked hard. He used an angle grinder (not a particularly precise tool) to cut the steel plate. The lines were uneven contributing to the gaps around the edges. The air gaps are unacceptable, even worse than the original damper plate. He did not have another piece of steel to cut so he spent a long time welding additional scrap pieces of steel on the plate trying to fix his first try but unfortunately the end result is no better than the original plate, in fact it is worse. We agreed on a $125.00 price. Since he worked hard I paid him $150.00 to reward him for the effort he made, but to say I am disappointed, is an understatement. It is money thrown down the drain. He suggested spraying foam behind the frame edge of the fireplace doors, to better insulate the fireplace. I called the original installer of the doors. I'm glad I called as the fireplace door installer said that foam is quite flammable and unlike the case with windows, should not be sprayed around the frame of fireplace. I know he worked hard, tried hard to please and did not complain, but ThumbTack says the workers it hires are experts in their field. While Bobby is experienced with welding and working with steel, his inexperience with fireplace repairs, and his inexact cut of the steel plated resulted in him winging the job and doing a poor job. I am very disappointed with the outcome. Ken W
Pipe-Tech Mechanical Inc.'s reply
I have been doing jobs on thumbtack for a little over a year and this is my first complaint. I quoted ken at 125$ to drive back and forth over a 15.00 round trip bridge, gas in a friends truck because my truck is in the shop. I supplied ken the steel plate which cost about 30$ for his fireplace damper door.Unfortunately Ken could not take a precise measurement so instead of one cut I had to make almost 3 and than patch the gaps. I did as ken asked and the door would not even open. I than with out asking for more money took apart and grinded out my welds to reeled all pieces at kens exact requested location. Ken was still not happy after 2 1/2 hours of welding up into the soot coming down on me from his fireplace. He agreed that it was sufficient and would work. Kens wife had to talk him into giving me an extra $25 which I did not ask for. I think if u ask his wife she will vouch that there was no pleasing her husband. The look was written all over her face. I have my own piping company I have many weld certifications. I did not need Kens $150 form 2 1/2 hours of labor ,plus gas totals materials, and on top of that I forgot my square there and caught pneumonia in both lungs for the following week in both lungs from breathing in the soot from kens fire place. Causing me to miss my regular job where I do quite well for myself. I joined thumbtack because I am a professional welder , it is also a hobby and passion of mind. welding is in an expensive trade for a customer to pay for ,so I feel as if I am actually helping people with my close to unbeatable prices for quality work. some people can not be satisfied Ken is that customer that wants the world for free.. On top of everything he could have called me an spoke to me be felt better trying to tarnish my credibility on this site than asking me to re repair it to his standards that he didn't even know himself what he wanted. It sucks that there are people out there like that but with that being said Ken I am so sorry what you asked me to do precisely you wound up not happy with it.I should quit my job and work on your fireplace for what I walked away in profit was $30 until you decide your happy.. Lol I find this review hysterical and I don't recommend anyone going to do this job for peanuts until Ken figures out what he actually wants and than he should be charged professional prices since he was not satisfied getting professional work for unbeatable prices.. Future thumbtack customers reading this review I stand for quality at great prices . You give me a shit you will see the proof is in the putting..There will always be customers like Ken in business you just have to smile and know that they will never be happy with the deals they get due to factors that have nothing to do with the quality of the work or the price it's they are in plain English board and miserable and quite honestly unappreciative. Sorry again Ken.. I wish you luck with your fireplace..
