Introduction: Walter has been teaching students of all ages since 2012. Walter taught at the Institute for Collaborative Education from 2013-2015 and has taught off and on as a substitute and private teacher at St. Ann's school since 2016. He has also taught privately to a wide swath of people. Through working at these institutions and as a private instructor he has developed his pedagogy while finding the best way to reach and inspire students of different backgrounds and ages.
Music is my passion and teaching music is the most rewarding way to spread the beauty of this art form. When a student learns, the teacher learns alongside them and it is the nurturing patient importance of teaching that allows people to grow and evolve in all areas of their life.

I studied with Walter for about 3 years. The only reason I stopped was to go off to college. Walter was an absolutely amazing teacher. His ways of teaching are extremely unique and effective. When Walter first started teaching me I was having lots of trouble with my technique. Walter really helped me get my technique up to par. I also struggled with feeling very insecure about my playing in the past. Walter created an extremely comfortable environment and I never felt judged by him. Walter was also a friend as well as a teacher. In times of my life when I was going through personal things, he always let me know that he’s there if I ever needed someone to talk to. Walter also assisted me to get prepared for college auditions. He not only helped me learn how to play the songs but also helped me pick out certain songs and guided with arrangements of the songs. With Walters help I managed to get into the jazz conservatories of NYU, The New School, Berkelee School of music, McGill, Purchase, and New England Conservatory. I’m currently studying at Purchase in my first year and feel extremely prepared for what I have on my plate.

Walter is one of the most profound teachers and human beings I have ever had the good fortunate of knowing. His knowledge of the technicalities of music... Rhythm, harmony, phrasing, listening etc are never ending. his knowledge of the history of "Jazz" is immense. Walter provided me with a solid foundation of double bass technique and a thorough understanding of the beautiful role the bass occupies in traditional musical settings. This foundation led directly to my acceptance at Oberlin Conservatory.
When you ask Walter a question he has the rare ability to approach it from multiple angles. This quality, in my opinion, is what makes an excellent teacher; the ability to guide a student to the wheel of their own ship. Walter is also exceedingly humble and patient. He has never once let his vast knowledge stop him from learning something new with a student in real time. It simply doesn't get any better than that. I cannot express to what degree I recommend Walter Stinson as a teacher. To not study under him would be a thoroughly missed opportunity.

I'm taking upright bass lessons with Walter. Besides being an astonishing virtuoso on the instrument, he has the amazing talent to break down his craft into easy and fun exercises for me to do. I highly recommend hiring him!

Hit a wall in my playing so I reached out to Walter to help me out. Not only is he an accomplished musician and a caring teacher, my technique and musicality went through the roof! Hands down, my favorite teacher I've ever had! I look forward to every lesson we do.
