Introduction: I absolutely love to teach and I love my students! I am here to help students and aspiring musicians reach their goals in a comfortable and positive setting. Whether you want to get started playing in a band, prepare for a recording session or brush up on your skills - I customize the lesson plan for each student; focusing on your individual goals and figuring out ways you can meet them as efficiently as possible. I usually teach out of my drum studio in Brooklyn but am open to Skype lessons or even traveling. It depends on the situation. Described by Spin Magazine as one of the top 100 Drummers in Alternative Music, I'm a drummer, composer, writer and band leader based in NYC. I founded the bands Oneida and Man Forever and have performed, toured, recorded or collaborated with Yo La Tengo, Laurie Anderson, Boredoms, Ex Models, William Basinski, Sufjan Stevens, Jan St Werner, Jim Sauter, Philip Glass and many more. I demystify the drums for players of all ages and levels.

John is a good guy that puts the attention on you. He is a thoughtful dude who gives out good advice on drums and practice. I honestly can say that his lessons are worth it as he helps you accomplish your goals.

My drumming has improved drastically after studying with John for just 3 months. He's a thoughtful and dedicated instructor with an infectious passion for his instrument; very down to earth and easy to communicate with, too. I'd recommend his lessons to drummers of all backgrounds and skill levels. Thanks, Kid!

I find drum lessons with John to be truly rewarding. Although I have been playing for many years, he has been teaching me to be more efficient and more creative on the drums. John excels at demonstrating the connection between better stick control/technique on a drum pad and better overall playing on the set. He has filled in so many gaps in my knowledge, and I feel as though I have so many more skills that I can apply on my own to whatever I'm working on. Regardless of your level, John is able to help and can offer new insight on what it means to play drums.

John is a great teacher. He guides each lesson with a plan, but is also interested in my personal goals and interests, which are integrated in the learning process. He also takes notes for each lesson for me, which is super helpful for home practice. He is clearly passionate about the drums and teaching, which is very encouraging (especially as a beginner). Bonus: he is a super nice guy!
