Introduction: Hey, I'm Joseph! I'm a jazz guitarist originally from Israel, currently located in Brooklyn. I’ve been living and teaching in NY for the past 6 years. Before focusing on jazz, like most guitar players, I grew up playing classic rock and pop songs. My experience also includes blues, funk and latin guitar playing, as well as some classical guitar pieces; so I feel that my teaching is positively influenced by a diverse variety of material and approaches. I love teaching guitar and helping others make music. I've been teaching music for years and my record of satisfied students can attest for my passion of giving people positive learning experiences. My motto is to tailor my lessons to each individual student's needs and interests. For beginners, I have a complete curriculum to get you started. Then, as we progress, we will study the songs/pieces YOU want, and develop the general musicality and skill set needed to play basically anything on the guitar.

Joe is able to explain complex musical topics in a way that is easy to understand, and his approach to teaching makes learning guitar both enjoyable and productive. He uses organized lesson plans to guide your progress on guitar, tailors each lesson to your needs, and gives you the flexibility to work on songs that interest you.

Joe has been working with both our 9-year-old and our 6-year-old boys for this past year. In that time, we've found Joe to be not only technically proficient, but more importantly, incredibly patient! Both boys really look forward to their lessons and both have really learned to enjoy music. Particularly with our youngest, who can be a handful at times, Joe always keeps it fun and seems to find a way to stay positive, keep him engaged and be productive. While many people can teach guitar, few can teach kids well; particularly young ones. Joe has that elusive combination of teaching skills, positivity and patience that really make a difference. HIGHLY recommend!

Details: 6 - 9 years old • No formal training • No, cannot read music • Acoustic • What the teacher recommends • Rock • No, but the student is planning to purchase an instrument • 60 minutes • My home, venue, etc.

Joe's the man. Every lesson has at least one moment that feels like a major breakthrough in my understanding the layout of the notes, and at least one more moment that makes me go "oh I know nothing yet". It's cool to feel like you're figuring it and thinking "that's it there's only a few of these repeating patters on the neck I just have to remember these and I know everything" and then it's also cool to be reminded that you're only brushing the surface of what is hidden in these "few patterns". Joe is a master at giving you these moments of clarity and he's a master at introducing new concepts right when you think you've got it figured out. I'm trying learn guitar and music in general later in life than most would and the cynic in me is convinced the adult brain is not as proficient in learning things that make a great musician like technique, theory, note recognition, or even just the memory required to get through scales. But even being convinced I'm fighting an uphill battle Joe is able to get me to remember a new bit of theory while also improving my technique in at least one way every single lesson. Joe is able to take me as far as I can go with music theory for 10 lessons in a row, and then when my brain needs a break he can effortlessly change course and spend a lesson or two just learning a song or focusing on something less mentally taxing like rhythm or fingerpicking. Sometimes those breaks are much needed. He's attentive too. I was worried lessons over zoom wouldn't be as effective as lessons in person. Joe pretty much notices 100% of the time if I used the wrong finger or if I missed a note and will always point it out and encourage me to correct that. Shows he's equally as invested in your progress and I don't know a more desirable quality in a teacher.

I began playing guitar when I was about 10 years old, learned by ear, played pretty consistently for about a decade and then took 10 years off because of life. Meeting Joe was what made me fall in love with guitar again. His lessons are straight forward, thoughtful, careful, and specifically taylored to your needs. He has made me reach places that I never could have imagined with guitar and I wouldn't trade our experience together for the world. I always look forward to our lessons. 1000% recommend.
