- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? The better I can understand the goals for a project, the better I can understand what my customer needs and expects from our time working together. The only way to start our process together in a way that is meaningful and useful for us both is to ask questions. When I'm tutoring, I always ask: What are our goals for this student? How comfortable are they with their schoolwork today? Has their teacher or professor given specific feedback about which skills they need to improve? Does the student have specific interests that can be integrated into our work together? What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses? Are there any additional obstacles they may be struggling with? When I'm writing, I may ask: How many words/pages is the client looking for? What is the client's voice? What is our deadline? Where will this be read, and who will read it? In an ideal world, what would the client want this work to accomplish or convey? When I'm editing, I may ask: How many words/pages is the client looking for? What information will this written project need to convey? How does the client envision their project (i.e. a novel that will be in good shape for an agent? Cleaning up a speech to be read aloud)? What are they proud of in the work and what do they wish for further feedback on? Who is the audience? What tone does the client want? What is our deadline? Is there a specific style guide and if not, does the client want me to develop a style guide?
