Francesca and I have so much fun at my lessons. We laugh a lot and she is definitely “for me” as a singer. Francesca is so versatile and can work with different genres and styles. I came to singing lessons as an adult and she has helped me improve more quickly than any other teachers I have tried.Mar 12, 2019
Gifted, knowledgeable, intuitive, focused, dedicated, compassionate, generous---these are just some of the wonderful qualities that describe Francesca Mondanaro as a voice teacher. She has a deep knowledge of the voice and its functioning, and the ability to explain these concepts in clear terms. She is a voice builder, using her expertise to choose the right exercise, or sequence of exercises, for what the voice requires at any given time, always with an eye to creating a strong, flexible, well-functioning instrument. She focuses on establishing a technique that can meet the demands of the music in a healthy way. She has worked with me to set clear, achievable vocal goals, and she follows them through from lesson to lesson, always concerned with my vocal health, progress, and well-being. She has helped me find solutions to issues that had eluded me previously, which makes me tremendously happy! The feedback on my singing has been so gratifying since I have been working with Francesca---people have noticed the change in my vocal quality, and I’ve gotten many compliments on my voice; specifically on its beauty, evenness, size, and resonance. I am lucky to have found her---she has renewed my joy in singing and expanded my expressive capabilities. I feel lucky to have found her and I recommend her with the greatest enthusiasm.Mar 22, 2019

I an perhaps not the typical voice student - after being told throughout my life that I had a "nice" voice, it was not until after my retirement that I had the chance to pursue serious voice study, and it has been a transformative experience. With warmth, patience and good humor, Francesca has helped me to find my true voice, develop more physical stamina and power and more pleasure and satisfaction from choral singing. It's never too late! If you have ever wanted to explore singing, you'll be in good hands with Francesca.Mar 12, 2019
Francesca is an extraordinary teacher and a master vocal technician, a rare gem in a city cluttered with singer-teachers with varying degrees of skill in conveying the fundamentals of vocal production. I came to her after four years with another expert teacher who built my voice, and in my two years with Francesca, I have known both the instant gratification and heady thrill of feeling my voice expand upward comfortably and consistently (I am a soprano but never dreamed of having solid stratospheric notes in my early years of training, and a month in, there they were! I guess I was ready :-D), and the deeper reward of incremental growth. Francesca's array of tools, tips, and tricks is vast, and her specific, individually tailored instructions enable the singer to come to grips with how to get at (let alone operate) the elusive internal instrument that is the voice - a tall order, given that there are no valves to press. A consummate, seasoned singer with an exquisite instrument, Francesca knows well the emotional and mental struggles that come with the often arduous quest to get out of your own way enough to fulfill - and actually enjoy! - your vocal potential, and she knows how to encourage, even as she puts you through your paces. I have been astonished at the results she's helped me achieve in two years, as have been my opera professional friends, and her work with some less trained friends whom I have referred to her has been equally impressive. She helped one flutist friend who is also a choral singer audition for and get into a high-caliber chorus, and another friend who, having recently retired, wanted to give voice lessons a try for the first time in her life, has embarked on a joyful adventure to developing what is a rare contralto voice. This speaks to Francesca's versatility as a teacher - anyone of any level of skill or aspiration is welcome and is sure to enjoy the process and hear and feel the result of applying her comprehensive approach to vocal technique, informed by, among others, the principle of making things more comfortable vocally, which invariably makes them sound better. Take a lesson with her - you'll be glad you did!Mar 12, 2019
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?I teach 30, 45, and 60 minute lessons. Many of my regular students like to take a 30 minute lesson for technique drills. I charge $100 per hour, $75 for 45 minutes, and $60 for 30 minutes. The fee includes cost for studio space. I try to keep my rates on the low end in my market at my level of training, vocal expertise and professional history, for those who want to take their studies seriously. I require a minimum of two lessons per month in order to attain any consistency in vocal growth and change to technique.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?A consultation lesson will be booked and is considered non-refundable. We will review your vocal history, training if any, vocal and/or medical concerns, and review your specific goals. We will spend most of our time working on vocalizes so that I can get a concrete understanding of what is happening in the voice. If the student wishes to continue on as a regular student, a copy of studio policy will be sent for sign off. Any student who wishes to commit to lessons is required to come to a minimum of two lessons per month, and I ask that my new students commit to at least three months of regular lessons. It takes at least that long to make any concrete progress. I do not teach on a drop in basis.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I did my undergraduate and graduate studies at The Curtis Institute of Music; additionally trained as an apprentice at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, a Studio Artist at Sarasota Opera, and attended the summer festivals of IVAI under Joan Dornemann of the MET in Tel Aviv and Montreal as well as The Music Academy of the West under Marilyn Horne. For the past three years I have attended the Teacher's Training Seminars of David Jones in NYC, as well as studied vocal technique with Janet Williams (Hanns Eisler Hochschule, Berlin Germany) and Arthur Levy (Mannes College of Music). In 2016 I joined the Vancouver Academy of Music as a visiting teacher and in 2018 I was formally accepted as visiting Voice Faculty. In 2019 I joined the Young Artist Program at Vancouver Opera as visiting voice teacher/lecturer. Also in 2019 I was invited to join the Rezonanz Opera Festival as Voice Faculty and Board Member.
