Jim, Shane, and their crew were absolutely stellar! They installed a new hardwood floor throughout our entire, multi-level first floor (~900 sq ft). There were multiple existing floors that had to be removed first, including tile, carpet, and a challenging cherry hardwood previously installed under our kitchen cabinets. They were beyond courteous, professional, punctual, and responsive to every ask of ours. Some contractors you have to watch and call their attention to some details that didn’t come out to your expectations....but not with Jim and Shane. Their work is detailed and thorough. You can tell they take their time and “shortcuts” are not an option with them. They just do things right. I can’t wait to hire them again for our next project! Thanks Jim and Shane!

I hired Don on three separate occasions during 2014 and plan on hiring him in 2015 to do needed work around our home, which is located in East Amherst. I find Don to be communicative with the customer, a professional and passionate in his work to ensure the work is of top quality and reasonably priced. Don's estimates of the work to be performed were accurate and complete. All changes to the scope of the work were primarily at my request, were thoroughly discussed with me and approved by me before work began. The work was finished in the time frame we agreed to up front. For substantially all of the work on these projects Don had a staff of two or three working with him. The staff was professional, just like Don, were very hard workers and pleasant to my wife and I. The first project was in our kitchen where a portion of the ceramic tile floor needed replaced, a new backsplash around the stove was installed and a sliding glass door between the kitchen and sun room was removed and replaced with a new door frame, which was stained and sealed. Don committed to a start date and an end date and he met those dates. This project was completed within a week. The work was of top quality. We wanted a border installed around the section of the kitchen floor being replaced and Don took his time to make sure it fit without excessive cuts to the border. This to me is a sign of his passion. The second project I hired Don to complete was to replace a 384 square foot treated wood deck. Don clearly explained to me up front that he could only quote on the surface of the deck and wouldn't know if the supports under the surface needed replaced until he and his team pulled off the old deck floor. Fortunately the supports were in good condition and this project was completed on time and in accordance with the estimate he provided. Don estimated the new deck would take three to four days and his estimate was met. Don hauled away all of the old deck and cleaned any and all debris. Again, Don was very communicative throughout this project making sure I knew when he was going to start and when he was going to complete. Don came back approximately six weeks later to stain this deck. He communicated up front when he would be on site and how long it would take and he met his timeframe. I had Don put two coats of stain which he did. The first day of staining he spent about a half day then left so the stain could properly dry then came back the next morning to put on the second coat of stain. This deck was done professionally and his work is excellent. The third project was a 360 square foot deck that I hired Don to replace. We had the same conversation when Don delivered the estimate that he can only estimate what he can see and wouldn't know if the supports under the deck floor needed replaced until he removed the old floor. The supports under this deck did in fact need replaced. Within a day I was provided a revised estimate to remove and replace all of the supports and at that time Don explained to me the timing to finish this deck. This deck was estimated to take six or seven days to complete and again Don met his schedule. Don completed this deck with the same level of professionalism and perfection that he did the first deck and kitchen work. We also agreed in advance to the revised work and timing of completing the work and he did the work in the time frame communicated to me. He came back several weeks later and stained this deck. Again, I am completely satisfied with the understanding Don had when he put the estimates together, the quality of the craftsmanship, the professionalism of he and his team as well as their meeting the goals in terms of timing we agreed to up front. I have recommended Don to our friends and family and would not hesitate to recommend Don to anyone. Also, I have already spoken to Don about additional work we would like to have completed on our home during 2015.

I used Craig to replace my entire porch, install a gate across my driveway and length of wooden fence in the yard. He was very professional, quick and it was very well-done. Will be using him again in the future

The star rating corresponds to building a project plan and cost structure prior to the start of services. The lot that Ideal Construction and Landscaping investigated to mow and clean up is located in another state from were I live. Hence I haven't seen the lot in a couple months. During a phone call with Dan, owner, he was in favor of taking photos of the lot prior to starting service, and to send them to me with a propossed service plan. I received the photos, and the service plan with cost, within the next business day. Dan built a professional relationship, understood the problem, and created a service plan. The service fee for the first clean up was well accepted. And ongoing mowing service is also scheduled. In addition, Dan and his team can help me with exterior and interior repairs to the house. Potential list of projects that they can manage for us are to strip and replace the first floor flooring, and also replacing interior and exterior windows & doors. Install dead bolts to improve safety as well. Looking forward, with appreciation.

Punctual, hard working and stuck to his time line. I wanted him to paint the basement of a property I had just purchased and in the process asked if he could do a few other things that needed to be done and without hesitation his answer was always "I can do that".

Nick was a pleasure to work with! He is very knowledgeable and definitely knows his stuff. We hired him last Friday and r door completely gave out that weekend. Talked w him Monday and he had the door installed Friday the same week. He was very clean and left no debris. I would definitely hire him again and refer him to anyone needing a door/ opener

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

  • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
    • Without insulation: about $900
  • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700
    • Without insulation: $550
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,000
    • A carriage-house garage door is a barn-style door with handles and hinges; it looks like it pulls out in the style of a barn door but is actually a roll-up.
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 16x7 garage door with window in top panels: $5,000
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 8x7 garage door with window in top panels: $3,500
