Introduction: ♪Do you want to take your playing to a whole new level? Virtual / in person! ***Read This Paragraph Before Requesting My Availability! Whether beginner or pro, send me a hand-typed message if you'd consider Virtual Lessons OR coming to my studio (Setauket / Stony Brook, NY) for a one-of-a-kind learning experience. I also travel locally and do FaceTime / Zoom lessons. If you are looking for a local teacher far from Long Island or cheapest teacher, it's not a match. *** If you're intrigued, I'd love to hear from you! Please include your cell & good time to reach you. I cover a wide range of possible students & goals, so it's cool if you just want to skim below. So, here's a little about me. I'm classically trained, have been teaching for almost 20 years, & regularly perform as a concert / cocktail pianist. You may hear some recordings of mine & my students' at my website link. As an instructor, I dedicate myself to my students and make efforts to go above and beyond in quality, helping students to learn what they love, find personal meaning for music in their lives, understand how to learn it on their own, and optionally prepare for a variety of performances (up-to 5 opportunities per month!) ♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫ I follow a constructionist/humanistic teaching approach: in which I teach the 'person' as much as the subject matter and help the student to grow through their own personal understanding, rather than a didactic approach of only giving commands. I've taught students aged 3 to 73! You can learn virtually any style, ranging from classical music, show tunes, jazz, video game themes, cultural folk tunes, improvisation, holiday, to modern popular music. The wide breadth of students I teach include: 1) Music Educators, including piano teachers, who wish to become more proficient or adept at piano, or improve their own teaching 2) High achievers of all levels 3) Advanced students looking to switch teachers 4) Intermediate & Elementary students 5) Complete beginners of all ages, who are willing to dedicate time each day to the piano, even if only for an initial trial period to see if they like it enough to make a regular commitment 6) Adults who want to reconnect with piano after decades away from it 7) Professional musicians 8) Undergraduate music majors 9) Self-taught pianists 10) Students with special needs and talents Lessons of any length vary in frequency from: 1) once per week 2) two or more lessons per week 3) or in special circumstances: less frequently I usually teach in my home/studio in Setauket, but also travel locally to students' homes, and have taught online via Facetime/Skype and videoconferencing software in which students may receive live & or pre-recorded instruction I strive to help all students improve their practice efficacy, technique, artistry, & overall musicianship. The diversity of individualized lesson goals include, listed below in order from more intense to less: 1) Becoming a professional pianist/instructor, or a higher quality performer/teacher Preparing for any combination of: 2) College or graduate auditions or recordings (I have prepared students to attend and graduate as music majors at Ithaca, Fredonia, Stony Brook, Hofstra, & SCCC. A former student whom I taught starting from a beginner's method book up through advanced repertoire recently got accepted for a doctorate in music at Juilliard.) 3) Concerto competition auditions (My high school student two, got to perform as the featured soloist with his school orchestra, and with the Stony Brook University Orchestra) 4) Your own full-length solo, duo, or senior recital 5) Piano competitions (Several of my students compete annually at a competition at Steinway Piano Gallery. I have had several students win 1st place and cash prizes, ranging from elementary to late advanced divisions. Several of my students have been selected to perform at the NYSSMA All-State Conference Piano Showcase in Rochester) 6) Professional performances at weddings, anniversaries, & other formal events 7) Playing for your own holiday gathering or dinner party 8) NYSSMA, Piano Guild, ABRSM, & or Royal Conservatory of Music festivals/adjudications 9) Recital performances at Staller Center, Steinway Gallery, Faust Harrison Pianos, and or private residences, as well as being featured at school assemblies or accompanying your choir 10) Performing in library lobbies, the middle of shopping malls, ballet classes, art galleries, or family gatherings 11) Senior living and hospital volunteer performances Students may wish to perform in the more traditional avenues listed above, or may take a more creative avenue, such as: 12) Multi-media opportunities of combining music with other creative outlets, such as poetry, dance, visual arts, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc. 13) Collaborating with other musicians & friends, such as playing in a band or forming a music duo 14) Only performing in service of others rather than being in the spotlight - such as volunteering, playing in benefit concerts, & creating musical gifts for friends and relatives 15) Or learning just for one's own personal fulfillment, (only performing for oneself with no one else in the room) Depending on each student's individual needs and interests, we may also work on theory, ear-playing, improvisation, composition, sight-singing, overcoming stage-fright, and or fostering a healthy mindset. I have taught many students with special needs, as well as geniuses who need someone to help them achieve their potential and those in between. For young children, I mix fun games, imaginative creative learning, stuffed animals, prizes, and positive work habits to set them on the path to loving the piano and being great at it! Please see my student reviews below, and check out my Facebook teaching page. I love facilitating student potential and discovery!

Dan is a great pianist but he's an even greater piano teacher. My daughter was 8 years old when she started taking lessons with Dan, and like most kids practicing scales was not high on her list. Dan has such a unique way of teaching that makes learning fun, even doing scales!! If you are looking for a good piano teacher you just found an amazing piano teacher.

Dan is a highly motivated teacher who is willing to go through outstanding lengths to make sure his students are the most knowledgeable of the piano that they can be. He works well with students of all ages and of all skill levels. His teaching techniques are tailored to each individual student and as an added bonus he is very friendly and easy to get along with and really knows how to make students have a fun time during lessons! As a student of his for over seven years he has definitely propelled me to new musical heights that I could not even imagine beforehand. I am currently pursuing a music degree as a pianist at Ithaca College largely due to his efforts. An overall outstanding teacher!

Dan is a terrific piano teacher...the best. My son has been fortunate enough to be a student of his for the past few years. He is extremely professional. Dan gives a 100% to each lesson to make it enjoyable, as well as pushing for high level piano playing. I highly recommend him and know my son would as well.

My first impression with Daniel was a good onee. He seems to be very knowledgeable, focused on my goals and was very flexible with my crazy work schedule. Provided me tons of extra materials and went over what I already had. I cant wait for my future lessons.

My son has been taking Dans classes for about one year and has made a huge progress. Dan is not only a great pianist but also a wonderful teacher, particularly skillful at engaging and keeping attention of young kids and fostering love of music. Dan can be demanding during the lesson and at the same time - playful and humorous to ease learning process if needed. Dan has always been understanding and sincere. He communicates clearly and discusses matters openly and constructively. Thank you for your dedication and tireless work, Dan!

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

When I was sixteen, my friends would love to have me teach them theme songs from movies, cartoons, & anime because I was always playing a piano that happened to be around at a youth group, school auditorium, or one of our homes. I was often told I was a natural teacher even then, as after a single session people would come up to my friends impressed and ask them how long they played piano, and my friends would reply "20 minutes" :p They started referring me to their family members and friends of their family. I have learned so many things over the years from what works and doesn't work with my students, as well as from supervised teaching in my undergraduate work, education courses, education psychology, my concentration in piano pedagogy (how to teach piano), and my contributed grad school work in education.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

    1) Find out what town the professional's studio is in. Thumbtack may have matched you with someone who lives an hour away. 2) Usually, high quality instructors form our own studio with extremely limited travel options. While it may be convenient to have a pro come to you, how important to you is the quality of the instruction? Ask me about the dozens of things I offer my students that most other instructors don't. 3) What is the range of achievement of the instructors past and current students? Request to hear some recordings or view some videos. 4) Unfortunately most piano instructors have not even been trained at a conservatory or even a music school in piano performance / instruction. There is sadly no legal requirement to have any sort of certification or expertise, so many people call themselves piano teachers even if they've never studied education, advanced technique, and with a master pianist. Unfortunately, this frequently leads to teachers often not conveying to students how to practice effectively, read proficiently, learn to master an unlimited number of pieces/songs on their own with increasing difficulty, and the technique required to play anything imaginable with beauty, comfort, and ease! Instead, many piano teachers unintentionally teach their students to play in a somewhat uncoordinated and musically uninspiring way, to always depend on teachers to learn anything on their own because their reading is so limited, to only learn one or two pieces each year, have one or two performance goals a year, and a very limited range of repertoire. Ask to attend a teacher's events and hear many of our students from all walks of life. You might be surprised that these inspiring students only started a year ago, or are a med student doing this on the side, or an ordinary kid who loves sports, or a child with a learning disability who has overcome these limitations in a performance, or a seven-year-old playing like be a high schooler, or a teenager playing at a professional level!

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

    1) Let's say it's a great match, and I'm excited to work with Dan to develop my piano skills beyond anyone's expectations! Would I step up and commit to a weekly lesson at his Setauket studio (with flexibility to reschedule or to do live 2-way video lessons when necessary)? 2) If I don't yet own an instrument, Dan can help me acquire one! What do I have space for, and what are my budget / space limitations for acquiring a weighted 88-key digital piano, or acoustic: upright / grand piano? 3) Am I interested in an average of 1 weekly lesson, or am I curious to try discounted multiple or broken up smaller weekly lessons (including options for guided practice sessions on FaceTime or Skype)? 4) When can I set aside time to practice each day? 5) Do I have any ideal future performance goals? Ex. Ultimately, I'd love to perform _______ one day for ________ at _______. (ex Moonlight Sonata or New York State of Mind for seniors or my fiance, at a casual get-together, dinner party, Instagram, or our wedding)
