FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Generally we charge $75/hr for graphic design work and we quote an estimate of hours. Once a quote has been finalized, we don't not change that price, regardless of how many hours over that we put in. Logos are hard for most since there is little understanding of their intrinsic value. For most small businesses logos start at $1000 and go up. For larger businesses with a broad presence such as national or international companies, logos start at $5000 and go up. Websites are priced based on the amount of pages, specialized scripting, number of photos per page, amount of copy, etc. We price websites case by case. Illustrations priced individually based on complexity, colors, size, and usage. USAGE CHARGES: This is the most important thing to understand for a client. Usage charges are something few ever get to deal with since most people look for the cheapest pricing. Only when a customer, for whatever reason, request that all the files pertaining to their jobs be handed over to them, are they hit with a surprise: Ownership Buyout prices. Let's see if I can explain this concisely. Normally, prices are based on what is called usage. usage means the artist/designer is permitting the client to use the art created for their business purposes. The client DOES NOT OWN the files. They don't even own the rights to reuse the file out of it's original context. If a client is interested in owning copyrights to all the final and work files, then an Ownership Buyout price is given which can in some cases by a shock to the client who is not aware of this industry standard procedure. The reason for this duality in pricing is the simple fact that the work files, the originals, the design style, all created by that artist or firm, are the tools of the trade for the designer. Secondly the design style or original graphic art is proprietary to that artist. A client cannot take a design created by one artist and have another artist copy it, even if the artist and client have parted ways. Permissions must be requested from the artist and appropriate charges will be incurred. Cheap prices reflect usage only, not ownership of rights. All art remains property of the artist unless bought out by the client at fair market value. With this understood, it should be clear why I would advise paying the ownership prices in the first place, and receiving full ownership rights to your files for the future. A job file will be stored on a back-up hard-drive for one year at which time it will be deleted. Additional years of storage are $150/year, must be prepaid. All work requires a 50% deposit before the start of the job. Final payment is not on delivery, but rather final payment is made at the time the final proofs are approved, before going to production (e.g. - printing). Deposits are taken as well for websites in the same way and final payment is made at the time for final approval of the completed site BEFORE upload to the client server. No websites go live without final payments. We are sticklers about this because we have had more than enough experiences where we completed jobs and delivered them without deposits or prior to final payments and the clients defaulted on us. We accept credit cards only after a trusting relationship has been established. Charge backs are not tolerated and could result in an industry wide black flag on the client's company. Disputes are to be taken up with the owner directly and no one else.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I personally come from a long line of artists, thus for me being an artist is a birthright. This all I do, the only thing I have done, the only thing I will ever do. I am a creative whether I like it or not! I must add that my insights and longevity as professional artist allows me to be a good judge of quality when it comes to vendor services or hiring freelance artists for larger projects. They have to perform at least as well as we do if not even better or they will not pass our review and will no be hired to work for us.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
We handle such a variety of work that we can't hardly form a statistical impression. The last few years, client requests for print work has gone down and requests for websites and social networking applications have become more frequent. Our experience allows us to adapt to changing times very easily and since we are nto geared fro one task more specifically then another, we are incredibly versatile and our customers love that when they realize, the need not go anywhere else for one type of service over another. We have well established vendors to carry out our printing, web programming, vinyl output, signage, promotions, and so on, giving us the ability to produce at the level of expensive agencies, with out the expense.
