Jim and his crew couldn't have possibly been more professional and trustworthy! Jim showed up to measure our property for an estimate on a Sunday! My wife and I had made many calls to 2 different contractors, both had been referred to us, one promised to have our fence done months ago and the other was insistent about us paying with cash, that is when we turned to thumbtack. We wish we would have done it months ago! Jim did countless hours of leg work calling the town and getting the sewer, gas and electric companies out to make sure everything was to code. Our Town is extremely strict and and a bit ridiculous, but JP Contracting addressed every one of our needs and hand built our fence so we had exactly what we wanted! There are 2 other projects that we need done, custom sliding doors and another outdoor project and we won't have anyone else do the work besides JP Contracting! Thank you again Jim and crew! True pros! If you ever need a referral give them my number! You guys rock!

Nick came out to televise a slow-draining sewer line, and he ended up spending a couple hours there, snaking out the line, sending the camera down the line multiple times, and helping me figure out that the lot line clean-out in our yard didn't actually feed into the sewer line like we thought it did - and all for a great price.

Great work, incredible value. I use reviews to base a lot of my online choices. Rarely do I leave a review unless I think the contractor did an impeccable job. 5 stars and I’m going to use him again to redo my bathroom in my new house

This has been one of the best experiences I have had with a contractor. Mike was quick to respond. His price was very fair. He did an excellent job at repairing my front porch after someone crashed into it. He did come out to assess the job and give an estimate, and I had many contractors before that said they would come to look at the job and never respond or return . Then to make things even better, I had new carpet put in and was unable to move my doors due to the height of the carpet. I called and Mike came the very next day and fixed the problem. I will definitely call him again for future work in my home

I can't say enough good things about this company and personally about Jim. I had a major problem with my sewer main in the middle of the night that A most plumbers would of not of had a chance to get to until at least the next morning at the soonest and most professional plumbers probably would of not tried to fix it they would of just wanted to dig the pipes up. I tried to snake the main myself with a rental that was not properly inspected when it was returned. The end of the snake with the attachment came off into my main. Jim came over to my house rite away to work on this problem for me. Because of his experience and patience his was able to grab the fallen pieces out of the drain. Then he didn't stop there he continued to work on my original problem and not leaving until the job was done, at 3:30 am. Jim went above and beyond to help me in my time of deseperate need and saved me thousands from having to dig up the pipes on my lawn. I would recommend this company to everyone, in these days its almost impossible to find a company with honesty and values the customer and not just trying to make a quick dollar. Thank you so much

After several contractors submitted their proposals. We hired Camm construction to remodel our bathroom. They showed up on time and did everything they said they would. Even after they found some unknown issues. They were very fair with the pricing. We would highly recommend this company and will be using them again in the future. Very honest.

I called Steve Caudle, owner of Cedar Mills Home Renovations, originally to fix some siding on my garage that was damaged. He came out promptly, gave me a reasonable estimate that we agreed on and, subject to weather conditions, scheduled a time window when he would do the repair. Subsequently, the winter worsened, we got 3 feet of snow, which caused a delay in the siding repair. As the winter began to thaw I experienced major ice damming on the roof over my living room which caused an inside leak and water damage to my drywall. Since this was an emergency situation Steve took on this unscheduled job right away. He literally had to rebuild my entire inside living room wall down to the studs. While this repair was happening I also hired them for some other projects, such as replacing floor tiles, replacing and re-piping a basement sump pump, redoing skylight seals and flashing, and a few other projects. All the work was done at reasonable cost. Once the weather improved Cedar Mills fixed the siding over my garage, which was the original scope of work. To make a long story short, Steve and the Cedar Mills team did an absolutely spectacular job. Completely courteous and professional at all times, and the quality of their workmanship was hands down some of the best I have ever seen from a home remodeling and repair contractor in the Rochester area. Cedar Mills gets the highest possible rating from me. I will definitely hire Steve and his team in the future! If you are looking for a professional, smart, honest, skilled and motivated team for home remodeling in the Rochester, NY area, that is also great value for the cost, Cedar Mills is a great choice. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

    Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

    • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
    • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
    • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
    • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
    • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
