Introduction: Learn from a working industry professional how to achieve your goals while learning to play and create the music that you love. Over a decade of full time teaching, a fully equipped cutting edge studio, and an instructor who has studied not only playing technique, but the science behind how people learn, amount to a rich, and one-of-a-kind lesson experience. I provide individualized guitar and bass lessons in East Setauket, New York, and in one on one live online lessons anywhere in the world; through a customized software and hardware setup, Ive created a lesson experience which is nearly identical to being in the same room together. I offer a customized curriculum based on your individual goals and learning style. Whether it's a traditional path of reading standard notation and studying scales and familiar pieces, playing entirely by ear, reading guitar tablature, or something in between, I will make sure that you are getting the most out of your lessons and practice time to achieve your goals as quickly as possible. Everything we do in lessons has a practical application. If we work on scales, they will be applied to improvising and songwriting in a very direct way. If we work on reading more complex rhythms, it will be because you expressed a desire to learn to play a style of music that requires that knowledge. If you study with me for years, as many students have, then eventually, we will cover all facets of guitar playing and music in general. However, the important thing from the start is to get you playing full songs -- note for note -- in the style of your choice.

My daughter has been taking guitar lessons with Mike for the past eight years. The valuable lessons she has learned from Mike while learning to play guitar were applicable to playing violin for her school. Learning how to practice, reading and writing music, playing a song by ear, understanding difficult rhythms, and being exposed to a variety of genres are just a few examples of the valuable lessons she learned over the years. Mike also recorded her playing her grandfather's favorite song so she could give it to him as a gift. My daughter has learned to love music and we have Mike to thank for that. I have also had the pleasure of learning how to play guitar through Mike. We both feel our time with Mike is always well spent.

Mike is an AMAZING teacher. I've been taking lessons from him for about 10 months and I've learned so much in under a year. He personalizes his lessons and goes above and beyond for his students. My progress would not have been as fast and my practice wouldn't be as efficient if I didn't have him guiding me in the right direction. I highly recommend him.

Excellent instructor. Vast knowledge of music theory helps explain why things work the way they do. Likewise has the training to help with the technical aspect of playing/performing as well. Super laid back but profession - I can see Michael being a great instructor for anyone from beginner to advanced.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I have two standard lesson formats. The traditional being once per week at the same day and time for one hour at $60/lesson. This can be held either in my studio in East Setauket NY, or over FaceTime/Skype. The other lesson format I offer is 20 minute FaceTime/Skype lessons. This is a guided practice session, similar to working with a personal trainer at the gym. It's a great opportunity to really dig into a single concept and take it to the next level. While I've found this lesson format to be highly beneficial for anyone, I designed it for students who had very busy work schedules, and even have several people who take this type of lesson from their office on their lunch break! Pricing is $20/lesson if you're taking three or more per week, $25 twice a week, and $30 once a week.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
After a quick playing assessment and discussion about a new student's goals, we start working on whichever areas I believe they will see the most immediate benefit. This typically means cleaning up right and left hand technique, going over highly efficient practice methods to greatly cut down what is ordinarily a time consuming learning process, and giving the student material to study based on their interests.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Fifteen years of teaching experience, backed up by two decades of studying privately with some amazing teachers, and tons of real world experience as a studio musician, producer/engineer, and performer.
