He clearly cares about his customers. He was generous with his knowledge, letting me know how to maintain my shower and even fixing a faulty knob for free. Would absolutely recommend him.

Our scheduled tech wasnt able to make it so rather than cancelling they sent us another guy who came in from manhattan....all the way to queens! Even with a long trip like that he was only 30 minutes late which was amazing! Not only did he install the 2 a/c units we hired him to do he also helped my husband drill holes in the wall and hang a curtain rod over our balcony door. We will definitely use these guys again.

Ackthba did a great job patching up a dog-destroyed door and putting my walls back to right after I hung a bunch of stuff on them. He was easy to communicate with and did good work. I'd hire him again!

I needed repair to fix my door frame. My door frame was quite damaged. As soon as I filled out the Thumbtack repair request form, Walter contacted me. It was a Sunday, that didn't deter Walter to come out not only to assess the damage, he repaired it that same day. he also gave us a great price which was tremendously lower than the other prices I was quoted. Walter is very kind and professional! I'm quite pleased with his excellent work! (See the before and after pics.) I would recommend Walter and his company to anyone!

There service was beyond excellent. They came the next day and worked around what was convenient for me. They went above and beyond by going to help me pick out an exterior screen door and delivering it. Evening was the only time I had available and they didn't even hesitate. It was an extremely cold night and they worked until 11:00 PM. I was so impressed by there work and customer service that I will be hiring them to do my other door. I highly recommend them.

PROJECT: Remove and install an exterior door. Darin came to my home a few months ago to evaluate a project I listed on Thumbtack. He provided a quote in writing within hours of meeting us. He was one of a few contractors that presented a written contract that detailed the work he proposed. He arrived at each of our three meetings on time. He completed the job tasked efficiently and left the work space clean and clear. His work was excellent!!! My husband and I would hire HBR again...in a heartbeat!

I hired Valdermir to attach a lock to my door because it wouldn't close properly. As it turns out, the lock I bought was not the correct one for the door. Valdermir troubleshooted and managed to fix my door with his tools so that it now does not even need a lock to close properly. He was very prompt, efficient and professional. I've already hired him again for another task I need help completing later this week. I highly recommend Valdemir! Sasha

Jaime was punctual both when he came to estimate and when he returned to complete the job. He gave a reasonable quote and stuck to it, even after he was asked to do a few extra tasks. He expertly trimmed and secured a large area of 40Ft tall bamboo and then also did a spring cleanup, trimmed hedges and cleaned all of the debris away. Since he had to go through the house to get all of the material out he was very careful to clean his shoes each time he walked through and not to hit anything in the house, or doors, hallways or walls on his way out of the building. This care was greatly appreciated by this homeowner. I would not hestitate to use his services again.

Paul worked quickly and efficiently. He was very friendly and professional. He explained well what he needed to do and how. He drove all the way out to long island from queens we found out - so he was super dedicated from the start. Only problem was he was too expensive, $400 for a back door door knob/bolt lock and a garage door knob lock seemed extreme for us. But under the circumstances and the late time of night we had to get it done, we didn't have time to shop around for a better price.

Glenn Scelza is a godsend. My old friend desperately needed help of a good carpenter to come and assess the benign neglect on the front of her antique home. Garage doors needed to be installed post haste, but the garage door company needed the repairs to be made first. I posted on Thumbtack and Glenn responded immediately. Glenn arrived and I could tell right away what a nice guy he is and is a seasoned carpenter/contractor. He assessed the project with a trained eye and zeroed in on what was good in terms of the construction and what looked bad to us, was very doable indeed.. He was very resourceful and made use of what could remain and shopped locally which I loved, for lumber, gutters, leaders and even found the novelty clapboard pieces to match the 1940's facade. He was very fair and open about what things would cost along with his craftsmanship which was worth every penny. I appreciate he could even work with us so late in the season even as winter weather set in. He will be present right after the holiday weekend to connect with the garage door people. When those vintage looking doors are installed the place will regain its curb appeal once again, thanks to Glenn. This guy is a keeper and I can see why is highly recommended! I add my recommendation to Thumbtack as well as our neighbors in the community. I look forward in working with Glenn on future projects. Thanks Glenn! Norm Peekskill, NY

Installed new closet doors in both bedrooms. Did a great job fitting the doors (needed to be cut). Price was great compared to others and the doors look awesome. He cleaned everything up and took all the trash out as well. Only reason I took a star off was because he brought his very young daughter(5ish?) with him. The job was a Saturday morning and he said it was unexpected that she'd be with him. It didn't cause any problems with the work, but it was strange. I'd still recommend/rehire him in the future.

Mitch really helped us out with a very specific carpentry problem -- we have a pocket door that was broken, and not a lot of people know how to fix that. Luckily for us, Mitch is very knowledgeable, and helped us out on a Saturday, fixing the problem swiftly. I highly recommend hiring him for any problems you have! He's great, and I'll definitely be contacting him again for any carpentry/locksmith needs.

Good experience - prompt response, good work, got the door open easily. One star docked because the final price had a $20 work fee on top of what was quoted when paying by credit card (in addition to tax). They claim it’s standard but it’s imo a little deceptive to not quote that in the full price.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.
