Jason came to the rescue on a cold April night when the furnace wasn't working (and didn't take advantage of the crisis to charge emergency fees). He was great- easy to communicate with and very courteous. Would def hire again.

Incredible service. Last week, the furnace didn't work. PSE&G was unable to start it (that 'worry-free' contract is a waste, and I canceled it), and with the cold weather approaching, something had to be done. I located Action Heating from the Thumbtack app. and read the reviews. I spoke with Kathy who assured me that somebody would come and give a free estimate. Sam arrived exactly on time despite it being a Sunday night, and actually worked on the furnace for over an hour. Sam is an affable type of guy, and you could tell that he was happy to be here. He was committed to fixing it right then and there, but alas, the fifty+ year furnace really just ran its course. I arranged with Kathy for Sam to come back later in the week to take out the old one and install the new (I should also note that Kathy came with Sam on a second visit, and I was impressed with that). Sam came back a third time with two helpers (Kathy's husband Bob, and an apprentice), and the three of them worked tirelessly, non stop, never hesitating to explain to me the steps involved). By the end of the day, there was nice warm air circulating throughout the house. Epilogue- Today and yesterday there was no hot water. I called Sam to inform him (I thought it was possibly related to the furnace work) and he instructed me on what to do. Perhaps sensing my ineptitude with this, he actually came over less than an hour later to show me how to move the dial to increase the water temperature. No charge. These guys are for real. No hidden charges or the sort, no "as long as..." or anything. I intended to wait a day or two before writing a review, and I'm totally satisfied. Big or small job that you need done, call them. Their prices are very fair (yes, I checked around like most would), but just as importantly as the price is the reassurance and professionalism that Kathy, John, and Sam display. You can take my word for it

I hired Skilled Service, Repair & Installation a few weeks ago, right before the New Year, and it was a very pleasant experience, from the introductory email, to the phone/text conversations, to the finalization of the job. One thing I really like about Joseph is, that he is really does seem like an honest business man. He must've mentioned to me two or three times not to ever feel shy about asking any questions at all and voicing my own opinion. As a homeowner, and not a professional in the construction business, it is very intimidating at times hiring contractors and letting them and their sub-contractors in the home while having to perform family-hood duties. I mean the household chores, the kids and their homework and their chores, etc, etc. I run a very busy household, Joseph's head had to be spinning, trying to stay focused on the work, hearing the noise and comotion. Who knows what he must've thought of my homelife, LOL, but like I said above, him and his helper were very pleasant and professional. They both have children themselves, and they both said it was nothing new to them. Even when Joseph came by for the estimate, my son and daughter would not leave my side, not even five minutes into estimate he had my kids giggling and smiling, I thought that was very sweet of him. So between the paint job and the electrical installation for the master bedroom and kids' room, the rooms came out absolutely wonderful. The accent walls in each room bounce the rest of the room right out at you. The lighting was beautifly done and there are more outlets and they are so easy to get to now, yay!!

This was a great experience! We had an issue with our bathroom sink where the trap pipe was clogged and in bad shape from prior ownership and cracked off in our hands. Celtic Piping and Heating was able to recommend a full trap pipe replacement at a reasonable price given the situation, with better pipes to help mitigate future challenges. He was super responsive, very knowledgeable and did a great job (also making sure to check for other clogs that might be an issue). We would definitely work with him again!

Based on such a positive experience with J&R Quality Repair, I'd personally recommend their services for any of your plumbing needs. Jason and Rick are two of the most professional tradesmen I have worked with; they are punctual, professional, organized and very friendly. I hired them for two separate projects: 1. Completely re-pipe a natural gas boiler system that had multiple leaks/corrosion and 2. complete plumbing for two bathrooms we renovated at our home. When I initially spoke with Jason about the projects he asked me to take several pictures in advance from my phone, so he had an idea of the exact parts and effort that was required. The boiler project was completed in several hours, all of the pipes/connections are leak free and aligned professionally. After the winter season, the work was 100% issue free, there are no leaks and the system is functioning flawlessly. For the bathrooms we renovated, J&R helped in two phases of the project. They initially helped disconnect the sinks, showers, tubs and toilets. We completed all of the sheetrock, tile work, and painting. J&R then returned to complete the plumbing /reconnect all of the new appliances and finishing work. Everything now looks amazing; all of the fixtures Jason recommended function great and I feel comfortable knowing parts can be easily sourced if there is a problem after years of use. I have already provided their contact information to several friends that have plumbing needs; I also look forward to utilizing their services for any additional projects in the future.

Felipe is excellent in every sense of the word. He came on extremely short notice as my furnace pump decided to start leaking water all over the floor. Within hours he had the problem diagnosed and repaired. He recommended some other repair-work that was very much needed in my utility room and also handled that also. All for a very reasonable price. He's very communicative and on top of the job. Highly recommended.

Hired Ben to troubleshoot and repair my Coleman Echelon 9.C Series gas furnace after reading the positive reviews on Thumbtack. My furnace was blowing, but not providing heat. The diagnostic light was blinking red 10 times when I looked at it, prior to hiring Ben. Ben arrived on time at 10:30am and, interestingly, the furnace started working suddenly! Still, I expected Ben to find the cause of the problem and he identified the ignitor as being the culprit. The original part showed signs of wear and tear, so he replaced it. The furnace now works fine. He explained there is a 30-day warranty on his work, but I hope I don't have to call upon him again... it's getting cold outside! Overall, I'm satisfied with Ben's punctuality, professionalism, and courtesy. He's a man of few words, but friendly and he answered my many questions with patience. He charges $150 for service charge plus $185 for the needed parts. A bit more than I expected, but satisfied to have heat again so quickly! Thanks, Ben

Carl and his assistant were great! We had some shut-off / control and airflow problems (bad filter) with our furnace / air handler after moving into our new co-op apartment late winter, but we decided not to deal with it until the fall — that was until our A/C stopped working on us this week. Carl arrived a few hours after my initial call and was able to correct all of the issues in about an hour and during a lot of chaos (I was also out of town, so my wife was juggling our two crying kids while a massive thunderstorm hit us and caused some minor flooding thru windows of our master bed). Carl was very patient and understanding of the situation. I would hire his team again without hesitation.

We needed to replace our electrical water heater which had burned out during one the winter storms. We originally tried to hire someone else from the Thumbtack site but he came, spent the day and after many hours informed us that the replacement heater that we bought was not suitable and that he was not responsible to help us pick the correct one. He also ruined our kitchen floor. Then I called Tom at Samsons who's price quote was the same as the first guy and he was happy to review our specifications, select and order the proper heater, and came and installed as promised. He was very organized and clean. He ran into a problem because the original installation was done wrong but he stuck with it with patience and professionalism and all is now working.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
