Dom is my current teacher, I can only recommend him: beyond his wide knowledge and experience with music, he is a kind, fun, and patient person who makes it all easier for total beginner learning bass guitar like me. No hesitation here, if you are looking for a good teacher on the UWS he certainly is your go-to person.
I'be been a bass player for 30+ years and I recently decided I wanted to take my playing to a higher level. My musical theory / knowledge has never been as good as it should or could be. I started taking lessons with numerous "Bass guitar" teachers but they were more focused on technique and that's not where my skill set was lacking. I found David First on Thumbtack and since he was located close to where I live, I decided to try him as my teacher. Long story short, best musical decision I've made in a very long time... David isn't a "bass guitar" teacher per se', he's a MUSIC teacher and that's exactly what I needed. He's extremely competent in his knowledge of theory and he's a very patient teacher. He's got a very chill, Zen vibe about him which makes studying under him very easy and peaceful. I can already see a major improvement in my understanding of what to play, when to play it and why it works as a result of our lessons. If you're looking for a great music teacher, I highly recommend David First.
I can't say enough fantastic things about Christopher. He taught my daughter in home guitar lessons. He is professional, responsible, easy to work with and a genius on guitar. He taught my daughter so much and she plays beautifully. I would recommend him to anyone!
I would highly recommend Dave Robles for guitar lessons. He taught two of my daughters, from age 6 to age 12. He is both a professional educator and musician. He builds a rapport with the kids, and keeps them interested by letting them have input into the kind of music they're learning. He is reliable and organized, and provided a tabbed binder with sections for notes, theory and music. I recommended Dave to the after school enrichment program at our elementary school because he did such a good job teaching my girls, and I would highly recommend him for all ages.
Sean was a great piano and guitar teacher for my twin girls age seven. He had the perfect balance between patience and direction.
I'm a 29 year old male with 15 years of experience on bass guitar and was looking to enhance my singing chops. I took lessons under Gwin for several months and she definitely helped me improve my ability to sing! She noticed my strengths and weaknesses and brought it to my attention that I had a singing register that was more than I had initially expected. She also showed me how to use diaphragmatic breathing to sing the right way. I'd recommend Gwin to anyone from beginner to advanced to improve your ability to sing.
I'm an experienced guitar player in the blues and rock vein, and wanted to stretch my ears and abilities into jazz. Josh is the perfect teacher for this, because he plays all those genres, and knows how to blend them. He's patient, and tailors the lessons to the individual. Whether you are an experienced guitar player or beginner, Josh will help you play better, and make it fun.
Kevin is a great guitar teacher! He's a very experienced musician and it's fun listening to him talk about music. His enthusiasm and passion are evident. He's quite academic about his teaching and focuses on teaching the basics, integrating theory and technique. I am a beginner guitar player and Kevin has been methodically teaching me the basics rather than jumping into playing songs right away. He's laying a solid foundation which is very important if one is interested in learning to play properly. He is very patient and overall it has been a pleasure learning guitar from him.
He gave me a lot of great things to work on for being such a beginner at piano. I feel like I learned a lot in just one session so far.
I started taking ukulele lessons from Gracie Terzian. She is fabulous. I'm an older student, and I mean older, and she is moving me along at my own pace. I'm having so much fun and learning at the same time. I look forward to every lesson. I can't say enough positive things about Gracie!!!
I took guitar lessons for three years with Lou at U Music and the quality of instruction was incredible. Lou clearly knows what he's talking about when it comes to understanding the guitar. He provides a holistic and fun approach to learning the instrument, backed up by many years of experience as a musician and teacher. I would recommend him as a teacher to anyone from the earliest beginners to the most veteran guitar players. I'm also pleased to say that every one of the instructors at U Music is friendly and easy to talk to. I took voice lessons with Ann (which were also fun and helpful), and I've had numerous chats about music and other things with both Greg the bass teacher and Nick the drum instructor. Great people, great instruction in my experience, and altogether a great place to learn about the wonderful world of music.
I've had the pleasure of working with Kyle for a few years and can say he is an extremely talented guitar player and awesome teacher. He breaks complex concepts down in a compassionate way for beginners and can even challenge seasoned guitar players. He's great with players of all levels from beginner to advanced. His lessons are fun and engaging, and you can tell he's passionate about music and seeing his students thrive. Highly recommended!
Aodhan (Aidan) is exceptional in his perception of where you stand as a guitarist and who you are as a person. He is incredibly talented himself as a guitarist but never uses that against you. Instead he is able to draw from his own talents to understand where you are as a guitarist and help you achieve your own goals, but even better, help you to realize that you have more to offer than you realize. He will give you personalized lessons that apply to you and your own level. He has the ability to apply pertinent lessons to the very beginner, with enthusiastic encouragement, and also be able to help someone who's got the basics, truly apply that towards a deeper understanding of what they are actually doing on guitar. I have taken lessons from other guitarists, who simply don't take the time to understand where you are in your skills, and just want to fill the time with talk and misdirection. Aodhan, isn't concerned with that nonsense, he is interested in making you better at the guitar and understanding what your abilities are on this instrument. I've gone from simple chord progressions and simple strumming to more complicated and off beat strumming under the direction of Aodhan. He really is very good at contouring a lesson based on your very own level and goals, but also lets you know a little bit more of what your capable of that you might not realize yet. I highly recommend him as a teacher, but you will also find him to be a friend as well. You will also benefit form going to hear him in action as he plays with several bands throughout NYC. I have been with him for a few months now and have been truly motivated to keep honing my skills on the guitar. I appreciate his respect in that and ability to keep me wanting more of myself.
I've been working on improving and refreshing my guitar skills with Brian a little over six months now. At first, I didn't really know what to expect since I haven't picked up music in over 15 years. What I liked about Brian is that he was able to customize my lessons to my level. I wasn't a true beginner, but I also wasn't advanced in guitar. He was able to test and adjust his lessons to match my skill level . So far, he has helped me improve in sight reading, finger style techniques, and develop a repertoire of several classical songs. In addition, we've explored Blues and Jazz and scales /accompaniment chords to i for solo guitar improvisations. I love working with Brian and tapping into his vast knowledge of musical styles and techniques. He is flexible and can change the course of a lesson on a dime. Some weeks we strictly work on technique, which is important. He's also a stickler for correct technique and will point out error in form if necessary. My favorite thing about working with Brian is that he is the first instructor (and I've had many) that focuses on developing style and musicality. Many instructors will move a student along when they learn how to play a song..but completely dismiss the importance of performing a piece with musicality in mind. I whole heartedly endorse and recommend Brian as a music / guitar instructor. Don't look further!
I decided to resume learning to play the acoustic guitar, an endeavor I began as a teenager. My daughters bought me a lesson from Howie as a Mother's Day gift. It was such a wonderful experience that I have continued to take lessons from him for several years now! He is patient, talented and skilled and has an excellent technique for imparting these abilities to his students. Howie is a great teacher and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone of any age. You will not be disappointed!
Yuto worked directly with my son teaching him piano and guitar. He is very knowledgeable and professional. My son learned a lot from him. He was very patient with him and taught in an encouraging manner. He is also very friendly and easy to talk to. I would definitely recommend Yuto as a music instructor to my friends and family. I am a complete beginner on the guitar, so it was daunting when I decided to start taking lessons. But Kiyoshi has been kind and patient and energizing from the get-go, never rushing me or making me feel overwhelmed, which music teachers have done in the past. I really enjoy the way he intersperses scales and chords with learning songs and solos of my choosing.
Jackie has been of great help. She comes over to teach me how to play an acoustic guitar whenever I have the time. She started with teaching how to play a couple of songs on the guitar. That got me interested in learning more. Now she has been teaching me music theory with the guitar - helping me to improvise! I see that she loves teaching music and sometimes we just lose the track of time!
My daughter has been taking violin lessons with David since she was 9 years old; and more recently, she has started classical, acoustic guitar lessons the summer before entering college. He is a dedicated professional and diligent in making sure his students learn correct technique and become more musical in their own personal way. More importantly, David has the ability to keep his lessons fun and varied! Her lessons have always been highlights of my daughter's week! I recommend David without hesitation.
Dennis is extremely helpful in teaching to the student's needs. Whatever you are interested in learning he is able to give great insight, as he has a wide knowledge of music and guitar. He is also very friendly, and will take time to make sure you are able to understand what he teaches.
Jim’s lessons strike a perfect balance between practical, real-world skills and theoretical knowledge. What started for me as “I'll take a few lessons to get some basic skills on guitar as a second instrument” turned into four years of serious study covering many, many concepts, styles and techniques. His ability to accurately read a students skill level and the direction of their interests (as well as his sense of humor) enables him to build a curriculum that stays interesting, challenging and fun. Thanks to Jim, I have a much more complete understanding of the guitar, and of music in general. Ethan Brooklyn, NY
