The food was Fabulous. The caterer was late and didn't tell me that she doesn't provide heating trays or any utensils etc. I didn't ask about those things because all the other caterers supply them and I just assumed she would as well. Otherwise, Ellen is a very nice person and did a great job. I was happy with the food and service.

Chris did an amazing job catering an event I was at. He was charismatic and charming as well as professional and the food was exquisite! I'll never forget the cheese/Apple/prosciutto crisps, that was a culinary genius paring.

I found Bacco Caterers on Thumbtack. I was impressed with the five stars and the reviews, so I contacted Chef Lauren to begin to see if she was the caterer for us—and was she ever! Joyce and I wanted to include our friends and family in our marriage anniversary celebration in our Brooklyn home. We are novice Open House hosts and Lauren advised us re details we would never have thought of, including in our menu selections. Her staff, chef Amanda and sous chef Laura, created freshly made hors d’hoeuvres in our kitchen as the party occurred, superb finger food that was varied, interesting, and delicious! People, including us, loved it. The servers Karen, Tony, and Kevin, and bartender Elroy were unobtrusively attentive and friendly to our guests. Our party took place on two floors and the yard, and the staff kept the food appearing and the empty glasses disappearing with seeming effortlessness. Many guests commented on how comfortable they made everyone feel, contributing to the general sense of joyousness. In spite of our request for no gifts, or perhaps because of it, many of our 50 guests brought flowers. As soon as I was handed the bouquets, Tony would appear and would arrange them in vases I had directed him to when flowers first arrived. I was free during the whole party to visit with my friends and family. I, who am not a party-person, enjoyed myself fully during this celebration, and I am grateful to Chef Lauren and her staff for the many ways (including a fantastic clean-up) they helped make that possible. Charly came to my apartment to prepare a surprise birthday dinner for my wife's birthday (6 of us total). This was the first time I've booked a personal chef, so I did not know what to expect. Upon booking Charly for my event, he called to consult with me about putting together a bespoke three-course menu for her special evening. Charly took care of all the details, getting all the supplies, and even printing custom menus for our table for that extra touch. While Charly's preparation and presentation were exceptional and professional, it was his execution that truly blew us away. This is not someone who just cooks for you. Charly has an excellent command of French and Provencal cuisine, and his dishes were superbly presented and stunningly delicious. It was a real treat to have such excellent food and culinary craftsmanship in our own apartment, and I like to think I can cook pretty well! Charly's warmth, professionalism, and dedication to his art as a chef are the reasons we're excited to have him again for a future event. You won't be disappointed!

I used Tamara for my engagement party and she was fantastic! I had about 60 people and we started with passed h'ourderves during a cocktail hour in one room (she provided the staff and a bartender). While this happened she was setting up the buffet dinner in another room. She let me know when it was ready and then (timing was flawless) we moved into the second room for dinner. My friends and family raved about the food, which included gluten-free and vegan options as many had dietary restrictions. We had a French theme as I had gotten engaged in France and Tamara worked with me on a French menu, including a delicious chocolate-hazelnut crepe desert with fresh berries. She was totally on-point with timing, presentation, and professional execution, including proactively handling things like insurance with the building so it wasn't a hassle for me. The reason I initially chose her was because she was more reasonable than the other bids I received for caterers in New York but she offered identical services to what they had proposed and she went the extra mile the day of the event. I will definitely be using her again and I would highly recommend her to anyone. I am still receiving compliments on her food and the friendliness/professionalism of her staff.

The food Chef Wayne provided was phenomenal!! We had a 40th party with 26 guests, which at the last minute became 27 guests. Chef Wayne had no problems adjusting to the unexpected guest and last minute course changes by our guests. Everyone commented on how excellent the food was and how nicely everything was plated. One note though, the Chef did run later than expected because he was stuck in traffic and coming from another event. Also, the wait staff, who were very nice and very accommodating, seemed a bit inexperienced, but all in all a very very excellent meal. I am very happy I hired Chef Wayne!!

We had a party in our home for 30 colleagues. Chef Dan arrived exactly on time and brought everything he needed with him. He prepared an array of visually appealing and delectable tasting culinary creations that wowed our guests taste buds and satiated their appetites. The bartender was great and the servers did an impeccable job of constantly bringing Dan's gourmet offerings while being pleasant and unobtrusive. Many caterers provide quantity and some high quality- chef Dan did both at a reasonable price and with a smile on his face. He cooked everything fresh in our kitchen and when he and his staff finished, our kitchen looked as pristine as when he arrived. The party was great fun and a big success. Every one of our guests commented on how fabulous the food was and how outstanding the service. He is our go to guy for any future parties or affairs. kudos and thanks. Mel & Pamela Pratter

You could do yourself a big favor and look no further for a caterer for any event, I imagine, big or small. We had a 30-person outdoor party planned, then thunderstorms, so we had a 30-person indoor party planned, and Adolfo anticipated the issues, set everything up beautifully, cooked excellent food, gave our guests a night they will remember. One important note: Adolfo came to our site days before, free of charge, which was probably an hour-plus journey for him. It was important to him that we agree on everything before he began- and when he arrived on the day of the party he just went to work, everything was settled except for the rain plan, which he solved in minutes. He brought his own staff, he did his own set up and take down. The stress level for us: zero. We just enjoyed the party knowing we were in excellent hands. If there were a six star, or eight star, or ten star rating on this site I would happily provide that feedback. I could not recommend more highly.

via Melissa, or "Chef Melissa" as we call her, exceeded our expectations! We took her from her usual route of healthy food and asked her to run a cooking class so that children with Celiac Disease could make and enjoy cupcakes on the morning of Super Bowl Sunday. She was really flexible and provided what felt and looked like "regular" cupcakes but modified for strict gluten-free compliance and somehow they were a little healthy too! All natural. even organic and dairy-free where possible. The ages of children who attended ranged from 4-12 and she worked really well with everyone! She set up before we (event organizers) arrived and had a friendly helper with her. They were professional but the kids related to them very well. The parents were all pleased and her rate was really reasonable! Our support group doesn't make any money from events like this, parents paid her directly and she was accepting last-minute additions without any worries. I can't think of a single negative - in fact we'd like to work with her again this year! Oh, and she even took the work of finding a location away from us (we're 2 volunteers who run this group for our children and others). Next class, we'll go a little healthier and really take advantage of ALL that via Melissa has to offer our kids! :) Oh, and she's even sending us kid-friendly, healthy and gluten-free recipes for us to share with the families in our group! She really goes above and beyond!

Peter and his team were absolutely amazing. Not only was he great at communicating with me prior to the event, but he also offered many delicious options for the menu to ensure there would be something for everyone at my party. The team was on time and very respectful of the staff and the space, putting together a lovely set-up with flowers (!) that made the event feel that much more special. The food and drinks were delicious. My personal favorite were the pulled pork sliders and mojitos, but everyone raved about how delicious all of our appetizers were. Peter even sent a special plate over to me (the host) to ensure I'd have a chance both to eat and sample his delicious menu. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of him and his staff throughout the night. They were just so thoughtful and professional. I would (and will!) absolutely hire Peter and Creative Table Catering again in the future. My friends were also very impressed by him and the value of the services he offered at my event. In a city with innumerable options for caterers, I would highly recommend Peter for any event you have. He made my special night a celebration to remember.

It was a pleasure to work with Chef Dave and his staff, Danielle who tended bar and Lawrence who did general assist. They were prompt and did a fantastic job both setting up and cleaning up everything. Chef Dave's food is outstanding! I got so many compliments on the food and presentation - all my guests were so impressed. The sliced sirloin steak was juicy and tender; the salmon was moist and tasty; and the eggplant parmigiana was incredible - best I've ever had! The mini meatballs and lobster rolls were a big hit, too. AND to finish off the buffet meal, Chef Dave's chocolate chip cookies were scrumptious! I really enjoyed having Chef Dave cater my special event - he was professional, accommodating, an all-around great guy. I highly recommend him!

Claude and Craig were fantastic, catering events on 3 consecutive days for me a week ago, with less than 2 weeks to do it. They were very kind, and are talented, producing a spread each day that everyone enjoyed a lot, and were punctual, swift in setting up and breaking down, which they did discretely as the party continued on around them. The well-abled duo was able to handle a somewhat complex arrangement in a short window (and popular time) with excellent communication, and offered competitive rates, especially for the use of better ingredients (organic & non-GMO). I would and have already recommended them to friends. Unique dishes, down-home style cooking, with flairs of other cultures mixed in - thoroughly enjoyable. The veggie eggplant lasagna was a big hit, among others.

I was overwhelmed with the demands and costs of a wedding and did not know how to proceed with catering services for the wedding. The costs for 50-60 people were exceedingly high and my budget was suffering because of it. I had made several calls to different caterers but to no avail. Then I tried Thumbtack.com and was very fortunate enough to speak with Yvonne Chambers from Taste of Our Legacy Caterers. She was very patient, reliable, understanding and resilient when it came to addressing the wedding menu. She held a great rapport with me and provided me with sublime customer service. She was also very negotiable with my budget and instead of turning me down like the other caterers; she worked with me until we came up with a price that was fitting. There are not too many caterers like her; she is one of a kind! On my wedding day Saturday, September 27, 2014, the food was delicious! My husband and I enjoyed the delectable arrangements of food. All of my wedding guests were commenting on how great the food tasted. Our wedding menu had a variety of dishes and even had a vegetarian dish as well (pasta primavera) which was a huge hit! If anyone out there is looking for a caterer who will meet your needs according to your budget and menu – Taste of Our Legacy Caterers is the one for you! Pamela

Renee and her staff from RSVP Events did an excellent job. From Renee's ability to bring together 20 staff in a week, to her communication before, during, and after the event, we were extremely happy with her service. The staff looked great and were professional, friendly, and easy to work with. The event had 1700 attendees, including many VIPs, and Renee worked with her staff throughout the night to make sure everyone was taken care of and had a great time.

It was an amazing experience having Milt, Janet and their crew as our caterers. They arrived early to set up and be prepared for our guest. The food was AMAZING!!!! I cannot get over their stuffed mushrooms, those delicious little chicken quesadilla, OMG the shrimp cocktail...I can sit here and name every single dish we ordered and tell the world what an amazing experience it was for my taste buds and my guest will say the same. I will continue to work with Studio Event Staffing for all my future events. Not only were they professional, they were very friendly and warm--they have an awesome team put together!!

Corley's Catering provided services for my wife's surprise 40th birthday celebration in late 2015. While I know the owner well I had never used her services professionally. Corley's Catering was accommodating and professional with me from meeting me near my job to plan the menu to ensuring that delicious food was there on time on the day of the event. We had friends and family (with discriminating tastes) there as well so the food, set up and customer service had to be on point. Corley's Catering is a growing small business and is worth giving a try for your event.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
