"I can’t speak highly enough of Mr. Kelkar. I was in growing pain from a series of problems and was fortunate enough to stumble on his business. Within a half an hour of contact Mr. Kelkar had gone well out of his way to fit me in last minute (very next day). He was remarkably thorough in his review of my symptoms and history and was very accommodating in reviewing his treatment plans with me. The massage and acupressure itself was absolutely the best treatment I’ve received: he identified and resolved issues that have gone unnoticed by my previous therapists. After the massage he gave me a variety of home remedies and stretches to use to help avoid twisting myself into knots going forward. Besides raw talent, it was also a very comfortable and relaxing experience overall. Already scheduling round two!"

"Mike is my personal trainer and massage therapist. I have tried many different massage therapists in the past but Mike is the only one who really listens to my problem areas and is able to get the right pressure. I have never been able to fall asleep during a massage until I met Mike. He makes me feel extremely comfortable and relaxed. As a personal trainer, he is extremely flexible with scheduling and is able to push me without being a ego-centered "lunk head." He is calm, organized, and you can really tell he absolutely loves what he does. Very professional and approachable. I couldn't have found a better massage therapist (trust me, I've been through the ringer trying to find the right one), nor could I have found a better personal trainer. In less than one month I was able to see results in my body and begin feeling comfortable in my own skin. HIRE HIM! You will not regret it!"

"My massage with Sara was amazing! First, using this app for the first time was such a great experience. I was looking for a massage therapist available on a Sunday. Sara got right back to me through email, allowing me to read her reviews and get some background info. Her rates were fair and her knowledge was evident. I also needed to go to her studio, which was clean, friendly and professional. I will definitely be using her services again!!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
