I came to Vladamire initially to work out my marriage issues and felt an instant connection with her as she was warm, open, and quick in understanding the issues. I think she is more than a marriage counselor, she has been there for me when I was at my lowest point and separating from my husband - she called, texted and went above and beyond what I think other therapists would do. She cares about her clients and not only helps to analyze the issues but focuses on solutions, ways in which we can heal ourselves. I would have never reached the point that I am at now which is a healthier view of my relationships and the most important relationship of all - with myself! I am grateful that I met this amazing woman and hope that others will benefit from her wisdom. I highly recommend Vladamire to those that wish to not only heal themselves of whatever pain they are going through but to discover themselves and their gifts to the world in the process.

Joan is a true professional and a great counselor. She has helped us to navigate several delicate and complicated problems, and continues to do so. Nothing seems to faze Joan, and she is fantastic at helping couples to to tackle issues head-on that would otherwise stay hidden and unaddressed. Highly recommended for couples' therapy.

Having met Dr. Anna is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I had been in therapy for over a decade with various counselors, but now I know the difference between a therapist and a Therapist. She is warm, compassionate and creative, no two sessions are the same, and she seems to have an incredible repertoire of techniques at her disposal. She is always goal-oriented, makes sure that results are really happening, and always explains everything so clearly as you have never heard and never understood before. She has the greatest sense of humor, her academic knowledge is amazing, and her fine-tuned sensitivity boarders on the mystical. Yet she is always funny, down to earth, and real. I've never laughed so much in therapy sessions before! :-) I am so grateful, ... because I am finally discovering what "free" and "happy" really mean!

Alison helped me much more than other counselors I've tried. She's insightful and perceptive and helped me see things differently and understand how I can change relationships even if the other person isn't willing to. Alison returned all my calls promptly, was professional, and punctual. Bust most important is the way she helped me.

Gary does a great job with counseling and helping to improve relationships. My family and I decided to get counseling to help us sort out some family issues. My family was initially worried about counseling and didn't know if it would help us with our issues. I kept pushing the issue and I finally scheduled an appointment with Gary. Gary is so easy to talk to and to work with. He makes the entire experience easy and it felt good to have our issues out in the open. I didn't feel like any of us held back anything and we all felt comfortable around him. If you are seeking counseling, Gary would be the choice counselor for your needs!

As a counseling practioner, I use discretion when selecting my own therapist and marriage counselor. Tina quickly picks up the pulse of each individual as well as the dynamic between them. Her incisive and insightful comments are offered judiciously. She maintains high standards of integrity viz. HIPAA. Her availability is flexible for working couples. She balances being a caring person and professional. I highly recommend her for couples and individual therapy based on my experience with her in both areas. S.

Alice is a very perceptive counselor who can zero in on what is relevant, and do it in a way that is not threatening or annoying even though the subjects are personally difficult. I would seek her assistance in the future.

Rosa is a dedicated, patient and caring professional. She is a punctual, organized, dependable and responsible employee. She can be strict and demanding of her clients yet respects a patient's individuality, independence and confidentiality. She appears as passionate about her job as a counselor and career in mental health as well as genuinely compassionate and supportive of her patients: their improvement and wellbeing. I have known of Blacklight for a while through my sister. I would read his posts on Facebook and ALWAYS be so inspired by them. I appreciated everything he would share with the world on inspired living. He also worked with my sister as a coach/counselor. My sister would share about how helpful he was in her life. Sharing tid bits of advice he would offer to her. Then I started looking for some help in my life, and realized that Blacklight would be a great match. Blacklight and I have been working together for about a year and a half. It has been life changing. When we started working together I swore I could not be an organized scheduled person. Now I live by planning my week, staying on track, and completing goals. Blacklight holds me accountable to my commitments, while inspiring and motivating to conquer the next frontiers of my dreams, and in my relationships. Blacklight is helpful on a practical front, with the how to organize your life front. But he is also a great ear for emotional/relationship work. He can set you up on working on your affirmations, finding your affirmations, working on how to properly communicate with your partner, definitely has some parenting advice to share, and is an all around ball of firey inspiration to my life!!! Everytime I get off the phone with him. If I feel like. "Ok, I can rock this life thing!!" Thank you Blacklight for choosing to be an inspiration to many, and more specifically thank you for helping me, motivating me, encouraging me, and listening listening and listening to me.

About

I am an ordained Christian minister. I am state certified addiction counselor and board certified pastoral counselor.

About

I am a mental health counselor in the offices of Dr. Michael DeMarco in NYC. In therapy, people learn to explore the feelings, beliefs, and it will help them achieve their goals and happiness. Therapy can help. I particularly enjoy helping with couples who are experiencing communication and intimacy problems in their relationship. Additionally, I like helping women who are going through major life transitions (starting a family, finishing college, job loss, divorce, children leaving home) and want to "re-invent" their lives or at least expand their ideas of who they are or who they want to become. Therapy is instrumental in helping navigate through some pretty challenging times, and I think it can help you too!

About

I take the couple through a marriage curriculum designed by Richard Wright, meeting with the couple on a weekly basis. I can help them put the wedding together and officiate it. I also do after-wedding follow-up. They can also do a marriage checkup on a yearly basis and as problems arise.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
