Ellen and her team were incredible. They were flexible, worked within the limitations of the space, and blew everyone away with the food and service. Will not hire anyone else if I can help it!

Chuck and Maria provided our party of 8 for my friend's 50th birthday with delicious food and service. He was professional, punctual, and delivered what he said, fresh quality food. We would definitely use Every detail catering again and highly recommend others to try as well.

I found out about chef Chris through a catering service. I wasn't sure what to expect because I rarely entertain at home. I wanted something special for my friends because we were celebrating my promotion but I didn't want to do anything ordinary. Chris and his team were great, we asked for some specialty wine, cocktails, and food. He went above and beyond! He even brought a personal sommelier and mixologist! Incredible! Really cannot say enough good things about his food and beverage team! I highly recommend the perfect bite. Creamy cheese, bright apple and crunchy bacon? Awesome sauce! Highly recommend for any and all occasions. Don't forget to inquire about his gnocchi, he made them right in front of us! Really cool, can't wait to have him in my home again! 5 stars!

This team provided a custom made traditional west African meal for my father's surprise 70th birthday party. Everyone raved about the food and the excellent service. People continued to ask about where I found them well into the next day. Sensing my nervousness, the entire team made it a seamless process for me upon arrival. I was provided with full catering as well as bartending service. They are definitely a group I'll use again for my upcoming 35th birthday party this summer. I cannot thank them enough for a wonderful event!

Bacco Catering was a great choice for our event. We used them for a charity event at our store and they performed incredibly. Our guest were so pleased as many of them asked me " who are the caterers, this food and service is amazing". Thank you Lauren so much for such a great night.

Hello, I just want to mention that this is the first time I write a review. I decided to write this one because truly Charley is an outstanding chef who truly made our night memorable. There are no words to describe how great the food was and the service Charley provided. I have no doubt in my mind that I will be connecting with him again in the near future for other events. So, thank you Charley, we truly appreciated it.

We had a party in our home for 30 colleagues. Chef Dan arrived exactly on time and brought everything he needed with him. He prepared an array of visually appealing and delectable tasting culinary creations that wowed our guests taste buds and satiated their appetites. The bartender was great and the servers did an impeccable job of constantly bringing Dan's gourmet offerings while being pleasant and unobtrusive. Many caterers provide quantity and some high quality- chef Dan did both at a reasonable price and with a smile on his face. He cooked everything fresh in our kitchen and when he and his staff finished, our kitchen looked as pristine as when he arrived. The party was great fun and a big success. Every one of our guests commented on how fabulous the food was and how outstanding the service. He is our go to guy for any future parties or affairs. kudos and thanks. Mel & Pamela Pratter

We had a party for my wife's birthday at the house for 40 people and could not have been more pleased with Adolfo Silverio and Manjar Catering. Both the food and the service were first class. Adolfo worked with us on the menu and layout for the party and everything went off without a hitch. People were raving about the food from the duck crepes to the quesadillas and the service including set-up, passing service, and clean-up were executed flawlessly. T.G. - Stamford

Peter and his team were absolutely amazing. Not only was he great at communicating with me prior to the event, but he also offered many delicious options for the menu to ensure there would be something for everyone at my party. The team was on time and very respectful of the staff and the space, putting together a lovely set-up with flowers (!) that made the event feel that much more special. The food and drinks were delicious. My personal favorite were the pulled pork sliders and mojitos, but everyone raved about how delicious all of our appetizers were. Peter even sent a special plate over to me (the host) to ensure I'd have a chance both to eat and sample his delicious menu. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of him and his staff throughout the night. They were just so thoughtful and professional. I would (and will!) absolutely hire Peter and Creative Table Catering again in the future. My friends were also very impressed by him and the value of the services he offered at my event. In a city with innumerable options for caterers, I would highly recommend Peter for any event you have. He made my special night a celebration to remember.

Gordon was great to work with. I explained that it would be a party of 25 people with varied tastes and food allergies. He provided many, many Menu choices. (He Guided Me Through Each Suggested Menu) as well as the cadance of courses of my proposed items. It was a special day as it was my husbands 65th Birthday Party. Gordon arrived with his staff two hours before the scheduled start time. He again went over the menu and proposed a slightly modified serving style as with 5 courses he explained it would take approximately 4-4.5 hours. I couldn't have been happier with the service, the food was exceptional and the cleanup very thorough. I would not hesitate to use him again or recommend him to anyone I know. Thank You Again Gordon. Sincerely Nancy F. NYC New York.

After speaking with two caterers who contacted me through thumbtack I was not imporessed by their professionalism and flexibility. Nick was different he never said no to any of my requests and put me at ease. I was surprised by how young he was when we first met yet he was inredibly knowledgeable and patient with my needs. The holiday party for the firm went very well even though the power went out halfway through! Nick's food was fantastic, especially the lamb slider and little raviolis! I would reccomend FIG in the future.

My husband and I hired Ultimate Affairs to cater and provide bartending services for my 40th birthday party. They recommended the venue, the photographer and were extremely professional. I didn't have to think of a thing, when they arrived they took care of it all from beginning to end. If you're in need of a full service company, please seek to use them. They even have extra services like a make-up-artist and an attendant to use for the duration of your event.

I have had the great pleasure of being a customer and guest on several occasions of Cornbread26's catering services. Each time I was blown away by their outstanding customer service, food quality and flavor, and beautiful execution of the event's decor. Claude and Craig work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that their clients don't have to worry about a thing except for enjoying the experience and the food.

Yvonne & her team were absolutely the best catering service that I've hired for my team thus far. This was for a larger week long lunch & dinner service in Brooklyn. My guys are very critical and very hungry construction worker type men, which I warned Yvonne about. She saw it as no issue - and no issue it was. She came prepared, on-time, took pride in the food she serviced and dished up some amazing food with large enough portion sizes that even had my team saying they were full! Yvonne and her team stayed and service our dinners, just out of the kindness of her heart and because she takes so much pride in what she does. She looked for feedback each day about the food quality and quantity. I could go on and on about Yvonne, her team and their food. No doubt will use her again and will personally recommend her any day of the week!

Renee and her staff from RSVP Events did an excellent job. From Renee's ability to bring together 20 staff in a week, to her communication before, during, and after the event, we were extremely happy with her service. The staff looked great and were professional, friendly, and easy to work with. The event had 1700 attendees, including many VIPs, and Renee worked with her staff throughout the night to make sure everyone was taken care of and had a great time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
