We had a clogged drain in the kitchen. The kitchen is in the process of remodeling, so the sink was not there and no water to flush down the drain. I communicated with Jason via text messaging, sending him pictures and voicing my concerns. He answered all my questions very patiently even before arriving for the job. At the job, he was very professional and careful. He cleaned the drain, used the camera to check it, and cleaned up after he was done. He said that he warranties his work and we can call him back if anything goes wrong after the sink is installed. (The sink has not been installed yet, as of today.) We are very satisfied with his service and will be calling him again for future projects.

The Tech from Service Guys arrived at our home early on a Saturday morning, just as we had requested. He explained how he would make the repairs and got to work right away. We were disappointed with the resealing of a sink drain. The finished project looked sloppy and messy. We could have done that ourselves, but we hired a professional thinking he would do a better job than us. The other projects (fixing a broken kitchen drawer, installing a drawer pull, and hanging two kitchen shelves) were done quickly and to our satisfaction. We only wish the resealed drain was cleaner, but otherwise we are glad we hired the Service Guys.

Gary and his associate put together the cabinets for my Ikea Kitchen. It was a large and complicated job that took a days work. They worked hard, diligently, and professionally the entire time. The cabinets looked great. He made sure to let me know that if there was any issue to contact him and he'd come back and fix it. I will definitely hire him again in the future if ever needed.

Jonathan just finished installing an IKEA kitchen for me. New base cabinet, wall cabinets, a built in microwave, and countertop. He had to work with difficult sloping walls (brick and terrible dry wall) and it looks fantastic. He even added a backboard to the counter when we asked. Jonathan replied to all my texts and emails quickly. He was very professional and skilled.

Walter is only "One Call Away". He is very friendly and helpful! He helped with our bathroom mirror hanging and kitchen countertop refreshment. He was even willing to come multiple times to get the job done and made adjustments to meet our expectations. We saved his contact and will def keep him in mind when we have new needs!

I highly recommend Celtic Piping and Heating. Edward got back to me quickly with an online quote while many other plumbers or contractors refuse to provide even a ballpark estimate without seeing the project. (Translation: it's harder to refuse when someone is standing in your apartment ready to work even if the price is outrageous!) Edward called me back within 30 minutes to arrange for a time and arrived promptly... on a Saturday, no less! I had failed to mention that I needed a drain installed in addition to two faucets and that wasn't a problem for him. He clearly knows what he is doing and my kitchen and bathroom now have a much more updated look thanks to his efforts. Edward is a true professional and he clearly takes pride in what he does. He left me with his card in case there were any problems as he guarantees his work. I don't think that I'll be needing it... until I have another project, that is! Terrific!

Greivin is our new go-to handy man. We hired him after a mediocre experience with a different service. We realized we'd rather pay a little more for a much better finished product. That was a good decision! Greivin came to our apartment one day after I reached out. He recaulked our kitchen counters and removed a wall heater that then needed patching and painting. He is quick, meticulous and professional. We saved his cell phone number and plan to call him again the second a new project comes up. His service and finished product are worth every penny! Hire him!

Konstantinos and his assistant sanded and painted our kitchen and bathroom cabinets. They also installed two backsplash glass panels and painted the cabinet beneath our kitchen sink. They were very flexible about scheduling the job and accommodated several requests we made to postpone. They completed the job on schedule and on budget, were very neat, professional, and courteous. We trusted them in our home. They responded to messages promptly and helped us to figure out how to accomplish what we wanted done. We would definitely recommend them and would use them again.

(This message originally sent directly to Home Geeks): Dear Vince: I want to take this opportunity to compliment your wonderful crew on two jobs very well done. I really can't say enough good things about Denis Esposito and his partner, Mike (whose last name, regrettably, I didn't get). The interior work they did on my basement and kitchen, as well as the exterior work above my bay window all turned out beautifully. Their hard work (under some brutal weather conditions), attention to detail, and dedication to quality was nothing short of exceptional. I've never seen any workmen go so far above and beyond the call of duty as they did (particularly Denis). I hope you'll pass my thanks to Denis and Mike for their outstanding efforts. The repairs to my home that they completed far exceed "satisfactory." On that basis, I'd have no reservations in contacting Home Geeks for any future work to be done, or in recommending the company to anyone needing a high-quality contractor. Sincerely, Rick

we hired Mauricio 's M&D Creations to refinish our kitchen cabinet after a few quotes and meetings with 4 contractors. Except for Mauricio, none of them came up with a sensible price. one of them MIA after taking the measurements. we were in a desperate situation as we moved in without renovating the kitchen. Mauricio came up with a plan that allowed us to have a new kitchen within 4 weeks with a reasonable price. I was in love with the industrial/rustic kitchen and want to have it in our high-rise condo. I was also very specific about the stain and finishing and insisted to use reclaimed wood that we couldn't afford. Mauricio was patient enough to test different stains and glaze in different solid wood to achieve the weathered look for us to choose. The day he arrived our apartment to replace the doors and install a couple of the new cabinets and drawers, we were amazed with the finished products. It was exactly what we wanted but without costing us a fortune. Mauricio is a very responsible, fair, and honest contractor and he loves what he does. I highly recommend him.

Chris from Szar builders was great. Arrived on time with what looked like some pretty nifty tools (I'm in to gadgets). He installed a galley kitchen for us with no issues. He also builds custom furniture, will be getting a buffet cabinet for the dining room, can't wait for that. Highly recommend him!!

This man did an incredible job on my kitchen backsplash. He was flexible with the scheduling and worked non stop once he arrived. He even made a trip to home depot for some items I forgot to order. The quality of the job was amazing and he did it for a great price. I would highly recommend. enjoy the pictures.

We were renovating roughly 3/4 of our Wilton ranch -- new kitchen, new sunroom, renovated LR & DR, new entryway, and new mudroom -- and we spent weeks looking for someone who was going to get our tastes, would be flexible with our changes, and could handle everything from paint colors, to accent choices. Jenine was simply a godsend. She was the best contractor experience of this or any other project we have taken on. She was creative, charming, and a joy to work with. She was always looking to help us save money where it made sense, while knowing when to recommend an investment that was going to make us truly love the end product. She was always available when we needed, and very responsive! From counter shopping, to lamp selection, to helping us pick the stone for the new fireplace, there was no detail she didn't attend to, no point she didn't consider. The greatest testament to Jenine's work? More than a year later (we are very late with our review!) we still stop and admire her decisions on an almost daily basis, and every guest who visits remarks on how beautiful it all looks! It is rare we offer reviews at all, but Jenine is so exceptional, we can't say enough. Hope you hire her! - Tom & Marianne L.

We contracted with High Rise to undertake a kitchen and bathroom renovation project and we were very happy with the outcome of the project as Kiran was open to working within the parameters that we had set for the project. Unlike many other people who gave us quotes Kiran actually provided us a few alternatives which would help us keep the costs down while still getting a quality product. I think a contracting firm who can work with different types of clients and can provide a few different solutions is good to have on your side rather than someone who provides a single quote and is not very flexible. Personally Kiran's behavior is also something that we generally found appealing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
