I enjoy doing my own gardening, but needed help creating a cohesive design for my 1-acre lawn. Susan of The Crafted Garden evaluated my property, listened to my ideas, and then created a landscape design that could be implemented in stages. With Susan's crew, we completed the first stage this spring. Susan reoriented the approach to our home, widened beds, and created a planting scheme that tied the different areas together, incorporating native species that provide good habitats for birds. Susan and her crew were prompt, worked very quickly, and left the site clean. They accomplished in two weekends what would have taken me 6 months. We had a positive experience and I learned a great deal about the process. When we began, I was focused on the plants to be chosen. But it was Susan's careful preparation -- curving a walk here, arcing a bed there -- that showcased our home's best features, and set the stage for a garden that offers us color and lovely scent throughout the seasons. Based on my experience, I highly recommend Susan as a creative and knowledgeable partner.

I was lucky enough to meet Susan during her visit to California earlier this year. She was able to solve many of the problems that my garden had presented for years. I was particularly impressed by her approach and problem solving abilities. In a short span of time she transformed my entire garden offering extraordinarily creative solutions. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
The cost of a project depends on the scope of the design and how detailed the client wants the graphics to be, if there is any hardscape, lighting or irrigation involved, the size and number of plants and the labor to install the project.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a Senior Master Gardener trained by the Cornell Cooperative Extension, am a member of and attend numerous lectures and field trips through MetroHort of NYC, and am a member of a professional group of designers at the New York Botanical Garden. I attend professional conventions and visit gardens whenever I can for inspiration and am an avid reader of design and horticultural publications and blogs.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I have always designed whether it be clothing/costumes, theatre sets, kitchens, or bathrooms. It was a natural evolution from being constantly involved with some sort of design work and my love and respect of Nature to working on design for outdoor sites.
