We had a clogged drain in the kitchen. The kitchen is in the process of remodeling, so the sink was not there and no water to flush down the drain. I communicated with Jason via text messaging, sending him pictures and voicing my concerns. He answered all my questions very patiently even before arriving for the job. At the job, he was very professional and careful. He cleaned the drain, used the camera to check it, and cleaned up after he was done. He said that he warranties his work and we can call him back if anything goes wrong after the sink is installed. (The sink has not been installed yet, as of today.) We are very satisfied with his service and will be calling him again for future projects.

He put together a large kitchen cart, a hanging rack (for hats, coats, etc.), and a dress rack with brackets. Overall, he did an excellent job.

I bought a kitchen side table from Home Depot. it looked very complicated to put together, so I was looking for furniture assembly company. SSRI reviews were good enough for me to call. Joseph was professional and sent me a wonderful young polite, professional man. Joseph was quick and did a wonderful job. I will be calling them again for a TV wall mount and kitchen cabinets. Jonathan just finished installing an IKEA kitchen for me. New base cabinet, wall cabinets, a built in microwave, and countertop. He had to work with difficult sloping walls (brick and terrible dry wall) and it looks fantastic. He even added a backboard to the counter when we asked. Jonathan replied to all my texts and emails quickly. He was very professional and skilled.

I highly recommend Celtic Piping and Heating. Edward got back to me quickly with an online quote while many other plumbers or contractors refuse to provide even a ballpark estimate without seeing the project. (Translation: it's harder to refuse when someone is standing in your apartment ready to work even if the price is outrageous!) Edward called me back within 30 minutes to arrange for a time and arrived promptly... on a Saturday, no less! I had failed to mention that I needed a drain installed in addition to two faucets and that wasn't a problem for him. He clearly knows what he is doing and my kitchen and bathroom now have a much more updated look thanks to his efforts. Edward is a true professional and he clearly takes pride in what he does. He left me with his card in case there were any problems as he guarantees his work. I don't think that I'll be needing it... until I have another project, that is! Terrific!

Greivin is our new go-to handy man. We hired him after a mediocre experience with a different service. We realized we'd rather pay a little more for a much better finished product. That was a good decision! Greivin came to our apartment one day after I reached out. He recaulked our kitchen counters and removed a wall heater that then needed patching and painting. He is quick, meticulous and professional. We saved his cell phone number and plan to call him again the second a new project comes up. His service and finished product are worth every penny! Hire him!

Felipe and his assistant arrived punctually. He was friendly and professional. He quickly assessed the source and reason for the leak in the kitchen sink and repaired it quickly. Best of all he showed me how to identify and fix the problem if it should occur again. I'd recommend him to my friends

I was very happy and pleased about my new kitchen. This was a job well done. Global Housing is a great company and I highly recommend them. James and his team were on point with measurements & everything required for my kitchen. I interviewed 5 contractors and what was most impressive was the time he took with me, to listen with patience and understand everything I wanted to make my kitchen look great. He even stayed within my budget. His professionalism was great, even from the minute he put on his booties to step in the house. During the process, James makes sure the customer is happy and aims to please. So if you want a good and professional contractor, Global Housing is the way to go.

Al came to the rescue with a price I could manage for junk removal from my yard (up a flight of steps) after my kitchen demo. He had to play a good game of Tetris to make all the stuff fit in his van, but he really filled it to the brim. He then helped me move any remaining bags and wood to the front of my house for easier removal for regular garbage night.

Rick and his guys did a total gut kitchen reno for me. Kitchen came out amazing and exactly for the price we agreed to in the beginning (which was much cheaper than a lot of the other Montclair contractors). His guys were always on time, curteous and very hard working. Rick was also very easy to work with and I highly recommend!! I’ll definitely use him on other projects in the future.

Chris from Szar builders was great. Arrived on time with what looked like some pretty nifty tools (I'm in to gadgets). He installed a galley kitchen for us with no issues. He also builds custom furniture, will be getting a buffet cabinet for the dining room, can't wait for that. Highly recommend him!!

We contracted with High Rise to undertake a kitchen and bathroom renovation project and we were very happy with the outcome of the project as Kiran was open to working within the parameters that we had set for the project. Unlike many other people who gave us quotes Kiran actually provided us a few alternatives which would help us keep the costs down while still getting a quality product. I think a contracting firm who can work with different types of clients and can provide a few different solutions is good to have on your side rather than someone who provides a single quote and is not very flexible. Personally Kiran's behavior is also something that we generally found appealing.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
