These guys were great! I was buying my own laminate flooring from lumber liquidators and wanted VRP Flooring to install it in my living room, dining room, hallway and steps. They came to the house for a free estimate and provided me with a list of the material I needed to complete the job along with a very fair price to do the install. I had a lot of questions concerning the install and the materials and they were always quick to provide me with an answer to my concerns. They arrived early on the day of the install and worked throughout the day to complete the job in just 1 day with 3 guys. They made sure I was happy with the job before they left and made sure to clean up the entire area along with removing the old rugs and empty laminate boxes. I also appreciated that they checked in with me the next day to make sure I was happy with the work and if I had any issues. I'm happy to report that everything came out excellent and there were no issues during or after installation.

Marty has completed several projects for us in the past six years. Every one was expertly completed, on time, according to specifications. Marty's prices are very reasonable, his estimates accurate, and his workmanship excellent. He is exceptionally versatile. He can tackle almost anything, from carpentry to masonry, floor laying to plumbing, electrical to painting and pressure washing. Projects completed for us include the conversation of two bedrooms into a studio with kitchen, with a new vinyl floor and the addition of an outside/entry door; replace an existing single basin vanity with a two basin vanity, and new vinyl floor; remodeling our laundry room; pressure washing and painting the house exterior. Marty is an excellent, reliable and affordable all-rounder with a pleasant personality. We will request his services for any future project we might have. We recommend him highly. He is a jewel!

After a recent poor experience with a contractor on this site, we were a little gun shy! But James and his crews are definite pros. We had them install 2 vinyl tile and 1 ceramic tile floors. It was completed in the time he gave us. They were clean and courteous. And the work was done to our satisfaction. Will definitely hire him again

Sam was very courteous and knowledgeable of the work I was having done which was laying down laminate flooring. He not only does this but he is a jack of all trades. He works very well with you and always in contact. We both had some delays which more was on me , & he was very understanding. I would definitely recommend him and use him again. To sum it up...he was fantastic. That's very hard to find. I had a good feeling as soon as I met him, and I met with many.

Great job for a fraction of the cost. My expectations were surpassed. I would recommend Wascar (owner) and his company. I will be hiring Wascar again to redo vinyl flooring in my mother’s house in the near future. Some before and after photos are included.

Sheldon Downer did an outstanding job with our hardwood floors, removing decades of linoleum, sanding and finishing it. I'd definitely recommend him for hardwood floor work. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the tiling he did for us. Our charcoal gray slate tiles have numerous white grout stains on them and a member of his crew poured grout down our kitchen sink drain and allowed it to harden in the pipes, blocking it completely. As a result, I had to replace the brand-new kitchen sink plumbing to the tune of $400. If I were to hire Sheldon Downer again, I'd have him do the hardwood flooring and keep on him about cleaning up after each day's work.

The job was to convert a tub with a ugly vinyl surround into a tiled shower! Tom came, provided a close estimate. I thought he said it will be done in 5 days but I believe he said 7 to 10. I went ahead with the project. He is polite, precise and patient. He finished in 10 but I found a problem with the final result that wasn't happy with. He came BACK and fixed it so now it is 99.999% perfect! The end result is also BEAUTIFUL! I will definitely be using his services again in a couple of months even if he is slower because I feel he does EXCELLENT work! slow and thorough is better than quick and sloppy!

We hired Karl from KWBuilding to do moulding in our great room..he helped me select beautiful moulding and his work is impeccable..we then asked if he could replace our basement staircase which was not up to code and that came out fantastic as well. He put in a waterproof vinyl flooring that looks like wood in our basement and that work was also done incredibly well..this company is top notch and if I could give 10 stars I would .. In addition Karl is extremely trustworthy , reliable , does excellent and neat work, and is very personable. I would highly recommend this company and I will use them again for any future work in my home!!

Chris and his guys did a great job ripping up my rugs and installing vinyl plank flooring. From start to finish, it was a pleasure working with him. At our first meeting, He is very personable and honest. When he came to do the work, he worked quickly and meticulously. And when they were finished, they cleaned everything up and put all the debris out to curb, which the garbage men took the next day. I couldn’t be happier, and will definitely hire him again in the future!

Martin Aranibar came to my house to give me an estimate. I already had the flooring which was vinyl and cork. I purchased the flooring online specifically because I was looking for pet-friendly flooring. Martin measured my living room and told me I had to order reducers to put around the fireplace and between the rooms without the flooring. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. I found his quote reasonable so I ordered the reducers, received them within a week and booked the job the following Monday. The crew arrived around 8:30 a.m. and were finished by 1:30 p.m. They knew exactly what they were doing, did a fantastic job, cleaned up after themselves and brought the old carpet as well as any other debris out to my curb so it could be picked up the next morning by my trash collection company. During the instillation I received a message from their office to make sure the job was going well and after the work was completed I received another message asking if I was happy with the job advising me to contact them with any concerns or questions. I love my new floor and when I have the funds to buy more flooring I will not hesitate to hire Toscano Flooring to do the job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
